Greece rape case - dad suspected

Mushroo · 30/06/2022 19:23

has anyone been following this?

The daughter is adamant it wasn’t her dad and I’m inclined to believe her, but so many things are odd:

  • The CCTV is awful to watch - her dad is acting oddly.
  • why isn’t the DNA test back yet
  • why hasn’t she done a pregnancy test
  • who leaves 4 kids at home to go clubbing with their dad in Malia.

She hasn’t taken a pregnancy test because she is suffering terrible panic attacks and is too frightened to leave her apartment.

Yet she’s happy to speak to multiple media outlets and have her face and name etc released to the entire world?

It just doesn’t make sense.

A pregnancy test can be done from home in literally 2 minutes.
I don’t think she thinks she’s pregnant at all.

On what way does it “not make sense”?

Being highly anxious and suffering panic attacks does not necessarily preclude a person from talking. Clearly.

I suspect you have no idea how media works. It isn’t as if someone has accosted her with a microphone and a zillion cameras. Reporters are extremely skilled in persuasion. It is exactly what they are trained to do.

FreeRangeFloozy · 01/07/2022 14:49

And who do you imagine would do that?

It's hardly a stretch to think that someone from the consulate might be able to pop to a chemist

She's been saying she thinks she's pregnant for days, it's not possible that she hasnt been able to get a test in that time if she really wnted one

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 15:02

Presumably whoever is bringing her food could also pick up a pregnancy test. Or if she’s going out for food she could pick one up then.

JustTheOneSwan · 01/07/2022 14:11

@LAHallucinations she may well have approached them if I were to guess from the info available I'd say quite likely someone with very poor judgment.
doesn't mean the Mail should exploit her bad judgment though and doesn't mean we shouldn't keep in mind a real person is in a terrible situation and maybe reserve our judgment.

OK, but I'm just trying to say that she's 33 years old, she presumably has the mental capacity to agree to an interview with the Daily Mail and she's receiving lots of help from the British Consulate. She also identified herself publicly on social media when the first reports emerged and was very keen for the newspapers to report her side of the story.

Victims of crime - when in the middle of terrible situations - talk publicly to the press all the time. I don't think that being a victim of rape means she should be forced to remain nameless and faceless, if she's happy to speak out. She wants to raise attention to this story to get her dad out of prison, and to get her rapist caught.

Yes it is a gigantic stretch. The consulate is not Deliveroo.

Not sure if that's a joke, the consulate staff are there to support and help Brits abroad, are you serious suggesting that if someone who says they've been raped and might pregant wants a pregnancy test they'd be saying nope, not in my job description? That woud be ridiculod

JustTheOneSwan · 01/07/2022 15:41

I'm not sure if the time scale, would a pregnancy test even be useful?
I wouldn't put it past the Mail to have thrown that question in to spice their article.
@LAHallucinations the prior exposure to Jeremy Kyle makes me wonder if the victim isn't susceptible to a media grab, they wouldn't have any scruples about low IQ or intelligence for a story like this. I'm not saying she's wrong to sell her story I don't know what choices she has available but I know the media won't have her best interests in mind to get an exclusive on this.

QuebecBagnet · 01/07/2022 15:41

Oddest thing is how long it’s taking for the dna results to come back.

Yet it keeps her from peeing on a stick?

I think you’ve been watching too much TV. DNA results take an age.

What is ridiculous is the extent of fantasy in this thread.

People talking out of their arses.

You don’t know how a consulate works do you? Or the media, or police investigations, or scientific research.

Tragic.

The cctv looks awful. At one point it appears as if the man's hand is right up her dress.

Poor woman needs lots of support. Her tiktok is odd too.

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 16:13

@SaltySalad

But someone is bringing her food, or she’s managing to go out for food. So clearly there is somewhere she could acquire a pregnancy test. And even if she absolutely couldn’t acquire a pregnancy test through any means why would she then tell a tabloid she was ‘60% sure’ she was pregnant with her rapist’s baby? What’s gained by telling them that if she can’t access a pregnancy test?

It’s all very weird, and for me the weirdest thing is that nobody in her family has managed to advise her/protect her whilst she’s clearly vulnerable.

I was nodding away with you until your last point. Hardly relevant to the article and so what? Parents are allowed to go away without kids.

Summersdreaming · 01/07/2022 17:04

Ugh, just watched the video. Without context I would 100% say they were a couple. Glad to hear social services are already involved with the children, god help them.

This is a really naive view of consulates. Consulates are not there to help tourists abroad. They are there for diplomatic relations with the host government and trade. They have (really quite limited) involvement when someone is arrested. There are a few structured services for people stranded abroad. But they do not help out tourists who could, basically, use a friend.

I agree the story is a bit weird and I wouldn't be totally surprised if things come out in the end that put it in a very different light.

A lot of what she's saying to the paper may be exaggerated drama. She may be manipulating but also may just speak without thinking, off the cuff, as much about her fears as what she knows, etc.. It sounds like she's been talking to them like they're her big sister or something. Which is the sort of relationship the journalists try to cultivate.

On the got food but not a pregnancy test - Food delivery is available and fairly accessible to foreign language speakers in most cities, certainly in Europe. Grocery delivery is almost certainly available too but signing up for grocery and pharmacy stuff - which will be aimed at Greek speakers and may have a very different way of laying out products, etc. than she's used to may not be that accessible to a foreign tourist in a hotel. And it may not be something she's ever had delivered even in the UK so not something she'd even thought about having delivered. Though again, she may be talking the way you might to a sister/best friend rather than making a thoughtful statement with the most accurate possible description of her circumstances for the record.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/07/2022 17:17

The cctv makes me really uncomfortable to watch. I would hope a sensible friend or family members would go out to see her if she is refusing to come home, she is clearly vulnerable.

Possibly, though bbc says urgent samples take 8 hours. www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-10873706

this has been what two weeks?

Redbone · 01/07/2022 18:27

The whole thing is really bizarre. What an absolutely fucked up family. Her poor children.
