Would you object to an amplified Muslim Call to Prayer?

Story here - would you mind? Do you mind church bells ringing? What are your reasons?

Don't know what I think - would be interested to hear your thoughts!

A few thoughts - church bells ring twice on a Sunday, a call to prayer is 5 times every day (I think), so possibly more intrusive?

But, in a multicultural society, should the call to prayer be part of it?

Church bells COULD be thought of as 'part of UK culture' rather than a purely religious thing?

Really torn on this one!

I think the mosque in east london has amplified calls to prayer, the locals dont seem to mind it..I've never heard the prayer call myself so couldnt comment.

As for no go areas for non-muslims, where exactly?? I live in Dagenham, it was a bloody scary place to be about eight years ago when mine and Dh's faces were the only non-white ones around, it's slowly become more multi-cultural thank God, as I was threatened with physical violence on more than one occassion for merely existing.

I'm sure there'll be people along soon, to anounce how they know of places that are filled with 'mozlems' and they cant get a look in, from my own experience, dh and I chose this area simply because we could afford it, nothing more sinister than house prices to it.... I do get the feelign tho that a lot of the locals are moving out of the area as they feel it's gone down market now that we have black and asian people living here too...... nobody is turnign our street into a ghetto, the people moving out just dont like sharing it with us......

Phatmouse · 06/01/2008 21:26

Yes I would.

carmenelectra · 06/01/2008 21:27

MMM i feel abit mixed too. I must say though we travel to Turkey and Tunisia a lot and especially in Turkey we hear it all the time and i adore it! Theres something quite mysterious and haunting i l do love to hear it.

fuzzywuzzy · 06/01/2008 21:29

The call to prayer is kept to a certain level tho, so you wouldn't hear it over regular hubub of street life uless you were very close to the mosque, and I believe, the call for morning prayers are not said over a microphone (mornign prayers being at 6:30am in winter and stupid o clock i summer).

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 06/01/2008 21:32

No, not in the slightest

Islam is a part of UK culture, IMO. And its rather a nice noise, its not unlike church bells.

Oliveoil · 06/01/2008 21:32

I would object, noise polution imo. When we were in Bali it was very annoying, iirc every few hours

I live in an area with no go areas, absolutely.

Oblomov · 06/01/2008 21:34

Yes, I would too.

Islam is a part of UK culture

No its not

Oblomov · 06/01/2008 21:36

I loved it when I lived in Egypt, but I am not sure that I would want to hear it five times a day now - I wonder why that is ?

Oblomov · 06/01/2008 21:38

I don't think that it is part of UK culture either. The national religion is christianity, I think.

fuzzywuzzy · 06/01/2008 21:38

Actually re-reading that article, except for the east london mosque I cant think of any mosque that does have the call to prayers amplified so you can hear it in the streets, not in the UK anyway..... where are all these mosques then????

LynetteScavo · 06/01/2008 21:38

would I mind hearing an amlified Muslim call to prayer? From my house yes. If I moved into a house near a mosque, I'm not sure, but probably not. If I were in an Islamic country, no not at all. do I mind church bells ringing? NO, not at all, I can see the lcoal church spire from my house, and love to hear the bells. I hardly ever atend the church though. I consider church bells to be a buatiful sound,. just like I consider Mozart beautiful , but I wouldn't apreciate traditional arabic music, for example because I haven't been brought up with it.If I ived in a citybnear a mosque, I thingk I would just accept the call to prayer, but wouldn't apreciate it.

figroll · 06/01/2008 21:40

Yes I would object to this - it is not a sound that we are used to in the UK - this is a Christian country where we hear church bells on Sunday - nuff said.

wannaBe · 06/01/2008 21:40

I loved hearing it when I went on holiday to turkey, but not sure I would want to hear it 5 times a day every day. Think maybe the reason why I feel differently about it in the UK is because when you're on holiday you're experiencing part of other cultures, stepping out of your every day life into the cultures/lives of others, but knowing that you're going back to your every day life iyswim? and not sure I would want the muslem call to prayer to be part of my every day life.

And no, islam is not a part of UK culture. There are muslems that live here but that'd entirely different. And what next, sharia law?

Oliveoil · 06/01/2008 21:42

I think it is a big leap from a call to prayer to sharia law tbh

PrincessSnowLife · 06/01/2008 21:43

I heard this story on the radio this morning. Couldn't believe it. Bells are also calls to prayer, surely. If muslims live close enough to hear the call, then why shouldn't a mosque have a call to prayer. Same goes for any religion, no? As an aside, the muslim callas to prayer are beautiful IMO.

There are much bigger problems to fret over in this world.

fuzzywuzzy · 06/01/2008 21:46

Look I dont think it's going to happen, most muslims have monitors in their homes, which connect to their local mosque and the call to prayer is transmitted directly to our houses, I generally have the sound turned down to a level where it's similar to a conversational voice level, so pople outside will not be distrubed.

I dont think there are many muslims in the UK expecting our mosques to be wired up to giant speakers...... Same as I dont think Shariah law is happening anytime soon either!!!!

Oblomov · 06/01/2008 21:46

Princess, church bells are a call to prayer, for christians, in a christian country.

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 06/01/2008 21:46

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the UK. Its been informing UK culture since, arguably, the 8th century and at least the 13th (and no, I don't just mean the crusades). There have been Muslims in Britain since, at the very latest, the 16th century, which means its been here about as long as Protestantism.

I could go on and on, but fgs. Muslims are part of UK culture and so their religion is part of UK culture. Britain no longer has an Empire, you know.

WideWebWitch · 06/01/2008 21:47

I would object on grounds of noise pollution but I'm not keen on church bells either for the same reason.

PrincessSnowLife · 06/01/2008 21:49

where does it say the UK is a christian country?
