Story here - would you mind? Do you mind church bells ringing? What are your reasons?

Don't know what I think - would be interested to hear your thoughts!

I didn't mean for that to sound angry. Ihave lived innumerous countries though and I like britain LEAST. i'm vry open minded, btw.

ruty · 13/01/2008 19:33

Haven't read the whole thread. But i enjoyed hearing the evening call to prayer when i lived in Bethnal Green - it was rather lovely. And I love church bells too.

ruty · 13/01/2008 19:36

East Oxford is very tolerant and multi cultural contentious cat. I doubt having the call to prayer would cause problems there.

Blandmum · 13/01/2008 19:38

Not all countries accept the wsetern way of life, sabaidii. Saudia arabia for one. It is illegal to openly practice any religion other than Islam in Saudi. there are no christian churches in Saudi or any other religious sites of worship. Just Mosques

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 19:42

Ruty, one of the mosques that would be having the call to prayer in oxford would be in cowley, a predominantly student area, I cannopt see any of them being too impressed with being woekn up daily by a call to prayer at dawn.

It could cause a bone of contention between the two communities living there (asian/students)

Blandmum · 13/01/2008 19:46

Mind you when I was a student, it might have taken more than the call to prayer to wake me!

ruty · 13/01/2008 19:50

I live in Oxford VictorianSqualor and went to the university too!
I wouldn't have minded, and the possibility of the students having a divide with the Asian community is unlikely I think, the Asian community is such a huge part of Cowley. I thought the 5 am amplified call was vetoed anyway? That one I can see might not be a good idea, although as MB says I think most students may sleep through it!

Blandmum · 13/01/2008 19:52

There is a fantastic story of a stdent who (in the distant past) listed sun worship as his religion to avoit the then compulsory attendance at Matins in the Collage chapel.

He was woken by his Scout at dawn to do his sun worship!!!

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 19:53

Lol, MB!
I've just read the actual article in the Oxford Times and they say the call to prayer would be done in the afternoons, so maybe they wouldn't be waking people up, but Cowley is already given lights just for Eid, yet not christmas, surely this is taking it too far??

Respect muslims, yes, allow them to practise their religion and celevrate their festivals sure, but there is a huge difference between respecting and wondering how much more segregated these areas can becme, are we not supposed to be living in this society together rather than creating seperate areas for different religions?

ruty · 13/01/2008 20:05

But the Eid lights in Cowley are also for Diwali and for Christmas, they stay up until after New Year. I don't mind that at all...

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 20:12

They are muslim signs though are they not?
I personally don;t mind them either, I think they look quite nice, I just think that these type of things are going to cause more segregation rather than integration.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/01/2008 20:21

Stamford Hill has Lights up at Hanukkah, nobody has problems with those, actually Becontree (or somewhere in essex), has a giant menorah light up for hannukkah, again no hysterical priests or members of the general public foaming at the mouth about that.

And to be clear I dont give a rats arse, it's rather convenient in fact to have lights up at night in winter, it feels safer.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/01/2008 20:25

And actually fairy lights are not muslim signs at all, they're more nicked from the christmas light thing, so actually I'd say they're christian signs....hope that alleviates fear of an islamic invation by fairy lights.....

Blandmum · 13/01/2008 20:27

Walsall council (white and mostl;y male) tried to rename the Christmas lights 'Winterval' to avoid offence to muslims, hindus etc.

the local Muslim and Hindu leaders thought it was daft and told them to call them Christmas lights!

the insanity was White and 'christian' rather than Muslim or Hindu

ruty · 13/01/2008 20:30

they were crescent moon shapes in Cowley this year. But they looked rather nice and why not reflect the local population...

Blu · 13/01/2008 20:31

PMSL at Islamic invasion by fairy lights

Blu · 13/01/2008 20:33

Tooting High Rd had a tasteful () selection of islamic cresents, hindu divas and assorted snowmen and santas.

SueBaroo · 13/01/2008 20:34

Yes, I'm quite sure that Islam is going to take over the world with props from Doctor Who Christmas specials

VictorianSqualor · 13/01/2008 20:35

Because if they were meant to be for Christmas as well as Diwali then it surely should have been something that was representative of both?

fuzzywuzzy · 13/01/2008 20:38

Wembley had a really pretty display of lights up for Diwali, they had a Diwali parade and fireworks too...... We went to see it with the girls (who are very excitable when it comes to lights and fireworks).
As we were about to go to the parade, D(?)h turns to me and suggests I remove my hijaab incase anyone at the parade was offended by it...my reply is unprintable, and in any case, nobody batted an eyelid, it wasnt as tho I was about to halt proceedings and demand to pray in the middle of the parade, right after screaming out the call to prayer first.........

ruty · 14/01/2008 08:52

LOL fuzzy.

PuppyDogEyes · 15/01/2008 01:55

There are churches in some muslim countries.
Pakistan and the UAE have churches.

lovecat · 15/01/2008 12:14

fuzzywuzzy, the giant menorah is at Gants Hill roundabout, just up the road from where I live.

When I first moved there I thought it was really fab and great that we had something like that going on - better than a load of Disney or latest kids' craze-related fairy lights, at least it means something.

MB, I thought that Winterval was an urban myth, something Birmingham Council invented for a local business-related promotion that the Mail and others decided was 'PC run mad' and publicised accordingly? link

tyaca · 17/01/2008 01:26

pmsl @ this one. where's jade goody when we need her??

my personal faves included...

?Islam is not part of our heritage. This whole Islam thing is getting out of hand.?

?i have no problem with them having their places of worship and praying but i don't want to hear it?

?When they start building christian churches and ringing bells on a sunday in muslim countries then I will accept it with good grace.?

?There comes a point when tolerance for ethnic minorities goes too far. If muslims want a country where mosques have an amplified call to prayer then they should choose a suitable country to live in. Britain is completely losing its identity.?

Earthling1958 · 27/06/2020 22:24

Islam, in about 10 years, will become the dominant religion in the UK. So yes let's hear the Muslim call of prayer. It's beautiful.
