All this going on - do I need to be worried about a war coming ? With Russia ?

OP posts:

Don't respond. It is deflection. Millions of lives in Ukraine are now at serious risk, we know why. We don't need to convince anyone on line to care about the babies and children of Ukraine

Lambkin689 · 24/02/2022 07:59

Only MN could turn a real war that is killing people into a rant about Tories and partygate

Alexandra2001 · 24/02/2022 08:00
Most very wealthy Russians have been given UK citizenship, look who owns Chelsea football club? now an Israeli citizen, so escaping any sanctions, despite Boris saying otherwise.
Notonthestairs · 24/02/2022 08:01

Keep - report anyone who think is a troll and please leave it at that.

Frankly you are just as likely to be a troll as anyone else.

Russian money swilling around in our political system is very much relevant. I hope the Government will step up their response now.

This, boris might be a giant twat but he hasn’t tried to invade another country.
TangledNemo · 24/02/2022 08:05

Yes they are. The Ukraine conflict is not occurring in a vacuum. It’s important to be aware of all the context to determine if it’s a legitimate concern or just a distraction.
I haven’t really been following the conflict, but I do think this has the potential to escalate into world war 3. I hope it doesn’t, but a party desperate to win voters back after some controversy is more likely to do the popular thing and that is not necessarily acting in the best interest of the country.

Whatinthelord · 24/02/2022 08:09

I just see the future as a great big unknown. I think if Putin’s intentions were obvious we could make predications about how far this will go. However, he’s clearly a ruthless narcissist with probably egotistical and illogical intentions.

What I will say is I think it’s a situation that will easily escalate further if not handled carefully. I think Putin is not one to want to loose face ind is probably more than prepared to take extreme actions.

Also I think people in the UK assume we have more military power than we actually do.

forcedfun · 24/02/2022 08:10

@JuergenSchwarzwald

And it's Kyiv not Kiev.
Oh for god's sake. Even my family members who are Ukrainian (living in UK and elsewhere in the world) are sending me messages today referring to Kiev. It's a silly thing to pick someone up on.
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 08:10

I don't think we can keep cowering in the corner what seriously, what has that managed so far...nothing. Ukraine has been invaded.

Alexandra2001 · 24/02/2022 08:11

@Keepyourheadscrewedon

Be aware of who is on the thread, and why they are posting......partygate and tory donors are not relevant
Sorry Keep but having a different take on this situation doesn't make me or anyone else a Russian Troll.

Given that we wont be putting troops into Ukraine, the UK's extremely weak response to Russia has be examined & the tory party taking Russian money and giving out citizenship is very relevant on this.

As well as much tougher economic sanctions, i would like to see ALL Russian involvement in international sport banned, esp football and the Olympics.

veevee04 · 24/02/2022 08:13

The west and allies need to pull together show strength and resolve. China is watching how this plays out and if they can take Taiwan.

GingerScallop · 24/02/2022 08:17

@Meklk

You are very naive if you think Putin will be scared of sanctions. I'm ten years in UK, spend my childhood in Eastern Europe. All what I can say-British people don't have a clue about Eastern attitude, especially Putin's attitude. Nightmare is coming. There are zero humanity or international law. They have their "own" rules.
What westerners don't understand is sanctions rarely bring change. Rich people find ways ironically or predictably with the West's help. It's the poor and vulnerable that suffer. What did sanctions achieve in Zimbabwe? In Cuba? In Venezuela? It's just prolongs suffering. Russia has had various kinds of sanctions for years and years yet Russian billionaires have continued to buy mansions in London, live the high life
Keepyourheadscrewedon · 24/02/2022 08:19

I think it needs to be much bigger than sanctions or anything else.

The reaction needs to be big, swift and unified. Sanctions are not going to work, so it is time for something much stronger I agree.

no it isn't and every Ukrainian I know asks for people to refer to it as Kyiv and says that it matters.

GuyFawkesDay · 24/02/2022 08:22

We've turned a blind eye on Putin's antics for years

We know there was russian interference into the US elections and the Brexit referendum in 2016.

The governments turned a blind eye.

There's many people been warning of this and the fact the Baltic States will be next.

As far as I am concerned if he wants to turn Russia into another North Korea let him. It's an experiment that failed before and will do so again. Cut Russia out of the world economy immediately.

MimosaPiqueNique · 24/02/2022 08:22

Bit of a tricky situation for old Boris given that Russian money has bankrolled the Tory party.

It was openly discussed this morning in radio 4. It’s very relevant to how the UK reacts to this awful situation.

Dinosaurs1991 · 24/02/2022 08:27

Very worrying developments indeed.

I'm not very politically aware so won't pretend I am, but one of the things that piss me off the most about these types of conflicts is how innocent civilians are always the first to lose their lives.

Russia are a powerful country with powerful military and an arsenal of technology. Why do they need to waltz in, balls swinging, and terrorise the civilians. Why can't they focus their grievance on the politicians/leaders themselves?

If Russia or anyone else for that matter decided they had a problem with the UK, they wouldn't be dropping bombs on no.10 downing street it would be some poor unsuspecting fuckers house / estate / shopping centre.

Why do they do that? Why can't they target the politicians/leaders and them only?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/02/2022 08:29

five ukranian's planes and a helicopter have been shot down

Newgirls · 24/02/2022 08:31

Russia had a role in the brexit propaganda. It has carefully weakened our bond with Europe. So much Russian money is here. Shameful.

notimagain · 24/02/2022 08:31

Do you anybody has the technology to go to war and be that selective?

Come again?

If that was supposed to say do I think anybody has the technology to go to war and be that selective - yes.

Look how precise the American drone strikes were when targeting ISIS key figures.

yorkshireteaparty · 24/02/2022 08:37

The guardian reported that it was Ukraine that shot down 5 Russian planes and a helicopter
Are we going to end up having a war.?
Notonthestairs · 24/02/2022 08:44

I suspect in order to control a country from outside you need a downtrodden frightened population - so you hit them and their services and armed forces. It's not enough to simply remove politicians. They need to be grateful for when the shelling stops and a puppet government installed and basic services resume.

Yes I'm appalled.

Pr1mr0se · 24/02/2022 08:44

No. It is a good distraction story though. I expect the press will give the usual doom and gloom slant to it. Expect headlines of prices rises on everything obviously.
