Unfortunately I think Bush will win again. I think the latest Bin Laden tape will actually help him and make the difference. What do you guys think?

donnie · 03/11/2004 15:28

needless to say I am disappointed but not surprised that Bush looks likely to win another term. This will no doubt make the whole situation even more polarised than it already is.

Uwila · 03/11/2004 15:39

Donnie, get a grip. For the most part I enjoy this post (even though I am all alone 99% of my opinions) because whilst peoples views differ they are civil towards me. I find your approach to everthing you say to be full of childish sarcasm and the tone to be unnecesarily agressive.

If you read this bloody thread, you will notice that the conversation on Israeli/Palestinain peace process (or lack thereof) was kicked off with me saying I did not understand Bush's approach. And that I thought there must be something more that I am missing.

So, back off Mr. Got No Facts.

donnie · 03/11/2004 15:43

I just provided the facts actually! so your ' no fact' argument has proved specious again. And yes I am angry, because you have ignored the facts, ironically, in stating that George Bush tried hard with Arafat! I don't think so, as the ' facts' I just relayed seem to prove. Unless you think I have invented them in which case let's see the ' proof' please. How exactly has he tried? please tell me, as you seem to think only you among all posters know any true ' facts'!!!!

donnie · 03/11/2004 15:47

and as for childish ' Mr Got-no-facts'? resorting to name calling? oh dear....

Uwila · 03/11/2004 15:47

I think if you reread my posts (all of them on this issue) you will find us arguing the same point.

Bush did meet with Arafat, but then he later refused to deal with him.

Change your tone, and the way you address me, or a shant repond to your questions.

And leave the melodrama outside of a political debate.

JuniperDewdrop · 03/11/2004 15:51

sorry to but in folks. I heard today that Bush had banned the media from showing pictures of dead servicemen's coffins. Any truth in this? Also he's supposed to have banned the draping of the flag over the coffins to try to hide how many have really died? Does anyone know the real total of US lives lost?

Welcome to butt in.

Afraid I have no idea. Is it common practice to drape the flag upon death? Though that was done at the funeral. But I could be wrong. Smells a bit like a tale to me... I'll see if I get a take on it from the guys in Baghdad.

JuniperDewdrop · 03/11/2004 16:00

It was from someone involved in Politics (heavily) but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has heard similar.

valleygirl · 03/11/2004 16:28

yes it's true that the government/military tried to ban the publication of photos of returning dead-service men in coffins (well we can't upset the public with the truth about war can we?). This was challenged by a guy running an internet site called www.thememoryhole.com who managed to get this overruled under the Freedom of Information Act. The website's worth a look - lots of information that the media/gvmt doesn't want the US public to know about.
By the way the Americans I know are all completely disheartened about another 4 years of that shit-kicker, and over 50 million Americans made the right choice. Unfortunately mass fear-mongering and fundamentalist Christian values seem to have won the day.

Heathcliffscathy · 03/11/2004 16:31

lisalisa, i don't agree at all that the comment made was anti-semitic. i would happily refer to the hispanic vote being significant in florida or to any number of other minority interests that have a significant impact on US policy.

btw everybody: kerry has conceded...

throckenholt · 03/11/2004 16:32

I was the one who mentioned "jewish money" - but I was not and am not being antisemeitc. I was trying to comment that it is not the number of voters who happen to be jewish that count (referring to the previuos couple of posts) - but that a few very rich families - for the life of me names escape me at th emoment - that have traditionally bank rolled variuos political parties. At least that is the arguement that has prevailed over the years.

My point was that the traditional American support for Israel is not to do with courting the general jewish population, but the big few who are prepared to put up large amounts of money in return for influence in policy decisions.

My final comment was that Bush seems to have other sources of funding (oil/industry etc) and so the so-called jewish vote (if there is such a thing) was probably an insignificant factor, particularly as someone had just quoted only 2% of the population was Jewish.

Whoever took offence to my comments obviuosly have their own reasons for doing so.

MrsFogi · 03/11/2004 16:32

Just announced on CNN - Kerry has called Bush to concede election!

Lisalisa - I didn't refer to Jewish money, but to the Jewish vote. I did not mean that it is a unified bloc, but rather that there is a significant pro-Israeli lobby in US politics which is capable of delivering a sizeable vote. You are putting words in my mouth and I object strongly to your attempt to silence me through abusive language. Your comments merely confirm that you are unwilling to let people discuss this issue.

tex111 · 03/11/2004 16:43

Looks like it Nutcracker.

I saw a sign saying"Don't change horses during the apocolypse."

valleygirl · 03/11/2004 17:00

Personally I think this victory plays right into the hands of Osama and his cronies - without Bush's (and his cronies)world vision would the terrorists be quite so able to hold up the west (ie America) as this corrupt and evil entity an imperialist heathen waging war on their Islamic bretheren? I think not.
Whilst it may well be more secure on the homefront for most Americans (which personally I think is a crock of shit) what about the rest of us living under Bush's shadow, and the thousands of troops (mainly American!) who are not quite so secure on the ground in Iraq?

valleygirl · 03/11/2004 17:02

...aren't quite so secure.

valleygirl · 03/11/2004 17:04

don't know what's happening to my posts.
anyway, you get the gist - just not happy!
