In the news today, the government have released plans to protect children from predators/peadophiles. Within their plans, they have detailed a behavioural analysis unit to try to determine how a peadophile thinks (too little too late imo, surley this type of work has been carried out everytime a peadophile is caught?).
Also they are planning to release a cartoon dvd which is aimed at the children to show them how to spot a child predator. Im all for this and will be definitely letting my dc watch it. Although it is disturbing at times apparently. Its such a shame that we have to show our dc the dangers in the world in order to protect them.
What do the rest of you think?

well my children won't be watching it

and I also do not worry about my children being attacked/taken/abused either as I think most reaction is totally over the top and hysterical compared to the actual facts, ie IT IS VERY RARE

so why worry them?

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 09:36

Actually i dont think it is that rare.
I have two friends who have both been abused as children, which when i dont have loads of friends thats quite a high proportion.

I dont think burying (?sp) your head in the sand is an option. I teach my dc safety of roads, safety around the cooker etc, why not safety around strangers?

haychee, is the video about weirdos in parks or trusted friends of the family? You mention strangers in your post, but attacks by strangers are rare, as oliveoil says.

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 09:53

I think it shows both strangers and known people (i think there is reference to a footy coach and a stranger in the park).

I used the term "strangers" loosley really meaning predator known or not.

I think it just shows yet more nanny state behaviour from the Government of ours

I do not want to worry my children unnecessarily about things - they are 5 and 3, maybe when they are older I would talk to them in words I choose, not some DVD from the Government

why would you want them to think that an adult could harm them at this age?

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 09:58

dvd is aimed at 6yrs and above.

My 7yr old is left unaccompanied for 1hour twice a week for dance classes. Is unattended at school, apart from the teachers of course.

My 4yr old isnt left unaccompanied anywhere except at school.

We do have male babysitters very occassionally, i trust them, but well you never know what goes on when your not there do you?

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/10/2007 10:00

mine wont be watching it.

oliveoil · 30/10/2007 10:00

well I am of the view that 99.99% of adults are good people

and I don't worry about my children being left with 'strangers' ie teachers etc

"but well you never know what goes on when your not there do you?" is a horrible way to live imo

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:01

OK it's an American link but still pertinent (couldn't find easily accessible British stats)

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 10:01

1 in 4!!!!!

I thought it was high, but not that high!

OP posts:
oliveoil · 30/10/2007 10:03

my "rare" comment was re being taken or attacked by a stranger

although I am a bit by the 1 in 4 statistic too tbh

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:03

With apologies but:

where in the news?

didnt we used to have some public info film about not takign sweets from strangers? I still tell my kids not to take anything from anyone they dont know

sounds like a ridicultous idea esp as most child abuse is committed by close family or friends not strangers

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 10:03

Olive
Do you know anyone who has been abused?

I do, which is why im more aware and worried about it.

If my dc were to be approached by someone saying, "mummy said come with me" I know they wouldnt go. Would yours?

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:03

I think it is best to be vigilant although I do agree that most people are sound

Enid · 30/10/2007 10:03

1 in 4 is utter bollocks

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:04

And yes it is most people the child knows sadly

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:04

lol, an informed comment eh Enid

oliveoil · 30/10/2007 10:04

no I don't know anyone that has been abused, not that I see what that has to do with anything

mine would not go away with strangers, no, as they are very shy on initially meeting new people

haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 10:06

here

OP posts:
haychEebeeJeebees · 30/10/2007 10:07

Even if the stranger said, "its ok, mummy said"?

OP posts:
oliveoil · 30/10/2007 10:07

how the hell do I know?

shall I test it out for you and report back?

handlemecarefully · 30/10/2007 10:08

I shall preview the dvd and if I find the content appropriate then I will show it to my children.

Mumsnet is a wierd old place

RubyShivers · 30/10/2007 10:08

i hate this culture of fear that our children are being brought up in
don't go out, don't go to the park etc etc
i think it is contributing as well to rising childhood obesity where kids sit inside and play on video games all evening

i fail to see how a DVD will help protect kids and i don't think a 6 year old should be able to watch a "disturbing" video to "protect" them
