Im watching the news aghast and saddened for the people of Zimbabwe. I will admit that I am not at all familiar with world politics- but why is Mugabe being allowed to get away with this?
the world was quick to interfere with Iraq's business - why does nobody in power seem to care about the terrible plight here?

someone please educate me.

Oh come on, I don't think Desi is racist. It's an emotive subject and it got a bit heated.

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 17/09/2007 23:22

I have been lurking on this thread, found it interesting reading, on a topic I must confess to know little about. I think the only thing Desiderata has been guilty of is a Fuck off or two too many. I dont know the facts, but it seemed like an interesting discussion till it started getting personal.

sorry but implying that more blacks would have died if not for white interventions in Africa is, by most standards, a racist revision of history

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 17/09/2007 23:24

Maybe so, but maybe then those of you who know the facts should pick to pieces what she is saying and prove it wrong?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/09/2007 23:24

"Zimbabwe did well when it had white farmers. We know how to farm land."

It's the "white supremecy" assumption, that doesnt sit well with me.

Hurlyburly · 17/09/2007 23:25

It's an absolute outrage actually. Colonialism bears a share of the responsibility for the ills most of sub-saharan Africa is currently suffering.

"Zimbabwe did well when it had white farmers. We know how to farm land."

That statement is so grotesquely inaccurate and racist in so many ways that I just want to vomit.

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 17/09/2007 23:25

But I shall take my leave off this thread, I apologise for the intrusion, for I truly know nothing about zimbabwe, mugabe, slave trade and britains role in either.

DrNortherner · 17/09/2007 23:27

I'm with Tiramsu and taking leave of this thread also not knowing enough on this topic to contribute.

hatwoman · 17/09/2007 23:27

tiramisu - tbh we were having quite an interesting discussion - including people who know a bit and people who didn;t but were intesrested. but then I got called a ponce and told to fuck off. at which point, funnily enough, I didn;t particularly feel like engaging desi in a grown up discussion

Desiderata · 17/09/2007 23:34

I am not a racist. And if I was, I would admit it.

But I shall leave this site for a while, because I can't have a debate on it.

The British led the world, for many years, on agrarian science. Half the household names in Argentina are Welsh,, because they fled Wales to farm cattle over there. We know how to reap crops in barren fields that will feed a population. When we were forced to leave SA, by the dictator, Mugabe, it was the kiss of death for many SA children.

I despite your knee-jerk reaction to my posts. Just what the fuck is wrong in being British? And how do you bring your children up in a country that you despise so much?

Sossy · 17/09/2007 23:35

All different people from all walks of life all over the world have taught each other things. It's wrong to assume Desi a racist from her one comment. (Accurate or not, I have no idea) It's childish to snap..."am reporting you" isn't it?

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2007 23:36

"When we were forced to leave SA, by the dictator, Mugabe, it was the kiss of death for many SA children. "

You may know nothing of the situation - but you could at least get the bl**dy country correct - Mugabe (AFAIK) has never played any part in politics in SA

hatwoman · 17/09/2007 23:36

whatever

Hurlyburly · 17/09/2007 23:37

"Just what the fuck is wrong in being British? And how do you bring your children up in a country that you despise so much?"

What are you talking about Desi? Seriously no-one has slammed being british. No-one has made any negative comments about Britain. You need to leave this thread now, really you do, because you are totally incoherent and you are causing offence to people.

Desiderata · 17/09/2007 23:37

Well, thanks for your posts, girls.

I needed a break, anyway.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2007 23:38

"Just what the fuck is wrong in being British? And how do you bring your children up in a country that you despise so much?"

Nothing what-so-ever hence the reason I'm happily brining my children up to be British-Zimbabweans

Somewhere in here is an interesting discussion about the impact of colonialism on African society. It's historically inaccurate to suggest that Africans didn't know how to farm before the whites got there. And no way is it half of Argentinian households with Welsh names, and it was mostly sheep rather than cattle in Patagonia. But on the other hand, there were probably technologies introduced by the industrialised countries that were advantageous. However, Desi's white supremacist phrasing is dodgy, to say the least. And no, I wouldnt tell someone to fuck off anywhere.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2007 23:40

I must just apologise to others on the thread for telling Desiderata to F*ck off

Desiderata · 17/09/2007 23:40

Ok, it's Zimbabwe. In my generation, it was lumped together.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/09/2007 23:41

Sossy - to be fair - telling someone to "fuck off...ponce" is a personal attack and as such is worthy of being reported. Check out MN philosophy.

I am surprised at Desi's comments. They dont sound particularly measured. I didnt call her a racist - I cant believe she is tbh (would have shown before now I'm sure). But, what she said.....made me feel uncomfortable for the reasons I've already outlined and it smacked of racism.

Before "the British", came the Romans (the Roman's learnt plenty from the Greeks). Before the Romans, came the Saxons. The Crusades didnt work out very well for us "Britons" way back when....

What she is saying is short-sighted, at the very least.

hatwoman · 17/09/2007 23:41

the provocation was pretty severe! I started another thread in chat btw. I do feel a bit annoyed that an interesting discussion got so bizarrely derailed.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 17/09/2007 23:42

your generation - what are you 80 odd years old or something?? I work with elderly people - and while many don't know where "zimbabwe" is - they do know where Rhodesia was and know that it's always been a seperate country from SA

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/09/2007 23:43

OH dear....
