Madeleine McCann

Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

I only looked at this because I thought threads stopped at 1000 posts? Has mn HQ introduced a special extra capacity for any that mention the McCanns?

totaleclipse · 27/09/2007 21:42

So you are just opening it so you can take the piss? are we freaks for worrying about a little girl? the world has gone mad.

PSCMUM · 27/09/2007 21:44

no, not for worrying, but i cannot bear the 'o, well what they must have done is ...blah blah' its just wrong wrong wrong. And no, I am not being forced to open it..it keeps popping up in actiev convos and so I keep coming in and hoping to find some sanity, and not, and leaving.

Okay, I'm not a mumsnet moderator, but here is my humble opinion...

if you dont like the idea of mumsnetter discussing Madeleine McCann, dont open the thread. So long as if everybody is posting "within the spirit of mumsnet" then bugger off

I dont agree with every thread that is on this site, but I dont think it is my place to pop in and call all the posters names for the fact they are posting about it.

Just my humble opinion and what the hell do I know anyway

ELF1981 · 28/09/2007 13:00

Or click the "with out news" box

binkleandflip · 28/09/2007 13:45

Some people do have a fascination and interest in crime. Without them we would have no police force, no forensic investigators etc etc etc.

Just because this is an emotive subject doesnt mean it shouldnt be discussed by those who are insterested in the technicalities of the case.

Click 'no "in the news" ' if you dont like it - spend entire days discussing crocs and fruitshoots if you like but stop trying to govern other MNrs interests by insulting them.

It's just boring and clearly pointless.

totaleclipse · 28/09/2007 13:50

well said

HorribleHorace · 28/09/2007 14:43

good post blinkle, agree totally

2shoes · 28/09/2007 15:12

can someone explain to me please. why are people so obsessed with this case?

Blu · 28/09/2007 15:19

binkle - I thnk it is possible that the police service exists because some people are interested in civilsation and justice.

And that poring over half-publicised facts in pursuit of speculative guilt of bereaved people actually affronts that sense of civilisation and justice.

Keep posting, of course, but pepe can freely offere thier opinion on that, surely?

Howdydoody · 28/09/2007 18:24

2shoes - because it hasnt been solved

2shoes · 28/09/2007 18:29

well there is a local murder of 2 young girls that has still not been solved years later. I don't notice people obsessing over that . so why this one?

Howdydoody · 28/09/2007 18:36

Im sure in a few years people wont de obsessed either 2shoes. But it's still relatively early days and bits of info keeps coming out to keep it topical

LieselVentouse · 29/09/2007 08:07

i dont think people are obsessed, its a daily top news story

pagwatch · 29/09/2007 08:24

But is it only a top news story BECAUSE people are obsessed.
I am not sure that what is served up as news these days actually is - it is celebrity driven so often. David Beckhams father being ill was on the headlines the other day. Very sad for the family but not really news - is it?
And however it happened and whoever is to blame the disappearence of one little girl has become a rolling soap opera rather than a news item.
FWIW I think it stopped being news a long time ago and the slightly unreal way it passes across our psyche every day is the very thing that allows us to discuss aspects ofthis case with so little humanity.
People can discuss what would have happened to the body in the heat in a detached way because it really isn't a real child anymore.
I make no judgement about that - I remember watching the planes crash into the twin towers with a 'wow look at that' kind of detachment until the reality of it stuck me a few seconds in.
We mix what is real and what is telly so often.
I am still reeling from seeing a defenceless man shot on television last night.
I remember Michael Moore observing that he had thousands of complaints when they showed a rabbit being killed in 'Bowling for Columbine'. A man was shot in the street a few frames later and not one complaint was received. We are used to seeing people shot on tv and somehow we now distance ourselves when it is real.
Our emotional responses are being manipulated all the time..

Can you tell DD got me up at 6.00 this am

LieselVentouse · 29/09/2007 08:27

have been up since 6am also - but this is the first time shes slept from 8pm - 6am - YIPPPEEEE

pagwatch · 29/09/2007 08:48
