It just seems like such a poncy waste of time. Why does it get so much coverage? Stupid hats, idiotic people with too many names and too much time on their hands... Nobody ever comments on the fact that it's during the week and during the DAY, when most normal people are either working or looking after the kids. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than watch horse-racing.

Me - it's really good fun. Although I'm not going this year but DP is tomorrow. he works in the wine industry so it's kind of obligatory.

I would LOVE to go if someone would sort the kids out for me, pay me in and give me some gambling money and buy me an outfit. Sadly I don't think that's going to happen.

It's on the Saturday too UD - and there are all walks of life there.

It's fun to get dressed up and have a bet or two....

Bah humbug!

UnquietDad · 21/06/2007 09:42

Bah humbug indeed!

I'm balanced, I have chips on both shoulders.

I suppose I've never seen the point of horse-racing, let alone dressing up for it.

The dressing up is the best bit for me. Oh and the free wine....

UnquietDad · 21/06/2007 09:43

You get FREE wine?...
Oh, well, that might have something going for it...

We went to Haydock once (not at all posh where we were!) and it was a brilliant laugh.

Yup. The benefits of working with someone who sells it. Most corporate boxes do free booze and food though and a lot of them give you gambling money too.

CatIsSleepy · 21/06/2007 09:46

off to get yourself a big hat then UD?

CountessDracula · 21/06/2007 09:46

We go, not to Royal Ascot but to the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes meet at the end of july it is always a fantastic race, we have been going for years with some friends
We go in the plebs bit for a fiver though, can't be arsed with all that dressing up nonsense

cornsilk · 21/06/2007 09:46

Free wine AND dressing up?

CatIsSleepy · 21/06/2007 09:46

i say LL...v. stylish...

CountessDracula · 21/06/2007 09:47

I love coming through Waterloo during Royal Ascot though (as i do every night) and seeing the amazing and awful headgear on the legless bronzed fillies

CatIsSleepy · 21/06/2007 09:47

have been to the races once...it was fun...even won some money (got VERY over-excited )

UnquietDad · 21/06/2007 09:48

[homersimpson] FREEEE WIIIINE [/homersimpson]

Snapped out of reverie by thought of having to stand and watch several dozen small men in odd silk clothes and caps thrashing horses to go faster round a dirt track for several hours, while surrounded by braying toffs in daft headgear.

I would love to go and wear a silly hat (i would design my own), Dh loves horse racing and i think it would be a great day out.
