I hope they pull through. Very worrying, so many questions.

From The Guardian:

Major incident declared after man and woman found unconscious in Amesbury

A government source did not play down the potential severity of the incident, saying it was a matter of concern and was being closely monitored

A number of sites in the Amesbury and Salisbury area were cordoned off as a precaution, although the force said it was not yet clear whether the pair were the victims of a crime. Tests were being carried out to establish the substance that led to them becoming ill

Neighbours said they believed the two people who fell ill had been at a hog roast organised by Amesbury Baptist church. They were said not to be regular churchgoers. The Baptist church was cordoned off

The couple were found on Saturday.
Emergency services were called to an address in Muggleton Road, Amesbury on Saturday evening [30 June] after a man and woman, both in their 40s, were found unconscious in a property. They are both currently receiving treatment for suspected exposure to an unknown substance at Salisbury district hospital. They are both in a critical condition

Well could be anything but I suspect the police will have found something suspicious to cordon off a church

Clearly not a case of carbon monoxide poisoning etc

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 14:29

Counter terrorism officers called in.

waits for influx of russian bots

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 14:32

They've updated the link since I last looked at it. They've done well to keep a lid on press reports for so long. It's clear they didn't really believe that the pair of people had taken illegal drugs.

lettuceWrap · 04/07/2018 15:13

I saw the news report this morning- very concerning, given recent events.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:05

BBC say it's the same nerve agent as used on the Skripals.

News breaking on the same day that Vote Leave appears to be confessing to breaking the law is awfully coincidental.

CDAlady · 04/07/2018 22:10

I agree it’s strangely coincidental kitten. As is the fact that news of what the Vote Leave campaign did seems to have been saved up for release immediately after the England win. It knocks it down the headline hierarchy.

woman11017 · 04/07/2018 22:11

OhYouBadBadKitten Shock not good.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:12

Yup. Algorithms mean most read stories go to the top. Easy to manipulate. Frustrating .

RunMummyRun68 · 04/07/2018 22:13

It happened on Saturday tho

It's intriguing..... where and how were they contaminated

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:14

It's not good at all Woman. They've not said who they are yet. I hope they are going to be ok.

woman11017 · 04/07/2018 22:15

I hope they are going to be ok yes

yolofish · 04/07/2018 22:15

DH justsaid it has been confirmed as novichok - I've not see the news yet tho

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:16

That's true Run. We aren't saying the new poisoning and the football are coincidental. Although, those two items are actually probably the things that are coincidental iyswim.

ragged · 04/07/2018 22:16

Radio 4 now will cover it, they are obvs. scrambling to assemble the story.

Member · 04/07/2018 22:22

This is bizarre, if it was discarded after the Skripal attack, it’s odd that no one else has been contaminated & that it’s remained potent enough to make 2 people so ill.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:25

Both British locals.

RunMummyRun68 · 04/07/2018 22:36

The woman has a young daughter... no mention of her though? Not sure if she lives with her mum

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 04/07/2018 22:37

I’m not sure the bit in that statement about reassuring the public that there’s no evidence that the second couple had recently visited any of the sites decontaminated following the Skripal attack is as reassuring as he intended.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2018 22:43

I'm not convinced by that at all either.

Twitter and some papers have named the couple, but I won't do so unless it's officially confirmed.

There's another parallel thread running along the same lines in In the News too.

Member · 04/07/2018 22:45

It’s onNewsnight now, Mark Urban saying the applicator used to put on Skripals door never recovered. Couple may have stumbled upon preparation site or site where applicator discarded

PaintBySticker · 05/07/2018 06:33

My speculation (founded on nothing more than wondering how it’s possible two new people have become contaminated) is that these people were involved in the Skripal attack - preparing or storing or applying the nerve agent? I have zero inside knowledge so this is just wild speculation on my part.

As someone else suggested - could they have moved into the house owned by the original attacker? Seems more likely than my suggestion if they really are ‘an ordinary British couple’.

Either way I hope they’ll be ok.

It is very worrying.

PaintBySticker · 05/07/2018 06:34

Sorry, that’s my speculation from the other thread and it’s been suggested we move here to reduce confusion.
