It appears the children and teacher have been found alive.
Has a miracle happened ?
I am so delighted and hope they will be ok after their horrific ordeal.
It's always nice to see good news as lately all the headlines are of something bad having happened.
Please forgive me if there is already a thread on this topic.

Easy to do Auntie. Don't worry.

Peridito did he mean sedated when they try to get them out, or sedated if they have no alternative but to leave them there? It's just unimaginable isn't it. How will the adults with them decide there is no hope and that they must save themselves?

pombal · 06/07/2018 08:56

I wonder why the british divers left?

Or have they just swapped and others have now gone out.

It really is a case of least bad option. There are no good options.

Would sedating them reduce their ability to breathe using diving equipment?

It still might be the best option. Leaving them in that cave with falling oxygen levels and the risk of submersion is unimaginable.

Am not religious but praying for them also.

chequeplease · 06/07/2018 09:06

It's horrendous. The navy SEAL died as he ran out of oxygen. I don't even know how this would happen, as he surely would have known how much to go back with? It sounds like something else may have happened? (Although I am certainly no diving expert)

I'm praying the monsoon season is held off for a few more days. The original thinking of pumping out enough water so the boys could walk back through sounded good. But it seems that's very unlikely to happen now.

Can't stop thinking about them all, and the families.

RayneDance · 06/07/2018 09:16

On media I have been reading, a navy seal from us with decades of experience said its safer to leave the boys there? He said their lives ate not at risk on the the tunnel.

This is what I can't understand, are their lives at risk or not. Will water rise. Will they still be able to get food to them...

TheHoundsofLove · 06/07/2018 09:34

I was reading the BBC site earlier and they had a rescue official quoted as saying that they initially thought the boys were safe to stay in the cave, but that things have now changed. What a horrific, horrific situation. Sad And what absolute heroes all the rescue divers are. I, too, can't stop thinking about them all.

beanaseireann · 06/07/2018 09:45

So sad that a rescuer has died. May he rest in peace.
It's a horrendous situation and they need to get out as quickly as possible as soon as it is safe to do so. Nature is sooo unpredictable.

DamsonGin · 06/07/2018 09:56

pombal, as I understood it, the British divers went in for the cave exploration bit as that's specialist in itself, but the Thai navy divers took over the established route. It must be quite knackering too, and stressful and that in itself would make it unsafe to go on longer if others could take over.

twitter.com/i/status/1014859741464539136 There are a couple of pinches in the cave. They are exhausting to navigate.

The UK cave explorers have come back because they did their bit. Others have gone out to do the next jobs.

Thank you and RIP Saman Gunan Flowers

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/07/2018 10:33

It's brutal.

I can't imagine how it is for the families to watch this unfold. And, I am very, very glad that I can't. Poor buggers, just brutal.

peridito · 06/07/2018 11:09

Guy on radio actually used word "drugged" . On Radio 4 this morning sometime between 7 and 8 am .It was in reference to getting them out via the tunnel/s .

I suppose they just don't know about their current location getting flooded or not .

What a horrendous situation for so many people .How could anyone decide what best course of action is ?

I'm also praying in my own way ,though no belief in a god .

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 06/07/2018 11:41

Giving any kind of sedative whilst trying to get the boys out would be v dangerous as sedatives can make you confused, you could vomit and choke, they may compromise your breathing esp if too high a dose given so you would breath less effectively or even stop breathing. Given that they are children and in poor physical condition and malnourished they would be more susceptible to suffering harms from sedatives. And if the extraction takes six hours it would be a long time, I'm not even sure which medication you could give to cover six hours safely, with little medical help during those six hours. Visibility is poor so the divers would not be able to see the boys well to monitor them during the underwater sections.

If you think when you have sedation in hospital for eg an endoscopy it is for maybe 20 mins and there are lots of medical staff around. Trying to do that underwater on children for six hours is completely different.

However it seems that every option is dangerous so they would need to compare to the risks of other options.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 06/07/2018 11:45

I read that now they think the cave where the boys are is receiving water from above eg trickling down through the rock via multiple paths, so they cant stop water getting in. Whereas previously they thought water was only flowing in through the tunnel, which they had more control over. So if rains v heavily above they worry water will flow through ground into their cave directly. I think I read this on BBC today. Terrifying.

DamsonGin · 06/07/2018 13:38

Interesting to read that the British divers are still out there.

That thread has also made me think, they must be getting desperate to help the boys and find a way to get them out, I hope that didn't contribute to haste or poor dive planning.

technosausage · 06/07/2018 14:26

They've just delayed the press conference by another hour.

Pupsiecola · 06/07/2018 14:26

Elon Musk has sent a team over to try to help. I cannot believe that in this day and age they someone like him cannot get them out. I do hope the authorities there aren't too proud to accept all offers of help, and be open to the ideas of the world's greatest minds.

PestymcPestFace · 06/07/2018 16:26

Quick thought. You don't run out of oxygen unless you are sharing with someone who is a slightly panicked novice. Hope the mission is going well.

peridito · 06/07/2018 17:16

You don't run out of oxygen unless you are sharing with someone who is a slightly panicked novice.

Pesty could you explain a bit about that . Do you think the diver who died was with someone who maybe wasn't experienced enough ?
Do they literally share the same tank ?

If someone is panicky do they use more oygen because they are breathing more quickly ? Do younger people ,like the Thai boys( panicky or not ) use more or less oxygen than an adult ?

i suppose it's a mix of gases ,not just oxygen ?

PestymcPestFace · 06/07/2018 17:24

I am assuming that they are already moving the boys.

bluerunningshoes · 06/07/2018 17:26

of course divers can run out of oxygen.
happens all the time.
anyone who has ever dived will have had it drummed into them to watch the clock carefully as you need enough oxygen to come back to the surface safely with a security buffer calculated in (faster breathing due to panic/having to help another diver in trouble etc)

bluerunningshoes · 06/07/2018 17:27

and yes, it's usually not pure oxygen as that becomes deadly at a certain depth of water.

clairethewitch70 · 06/07/2018 17:50

I reckon they are moving the children out now too. That maybe why the press conference is delayed as they want to announce they are (hopefully) all safe.

DamsonGin · 06/07/2018 17:51

Quite happy for press conferences to be at the very bottom of their priorities.

PestymcPestFace · 06/07/2018 17:54

It is going to take days to get them all out. Those passages are narrow and only allow for one way traffic. Belgium diver Ben Reymenants says the first boys will be out today, almost midnight in Thailand now it is in belguim
