More nuclear power for Britain

There is a lot of important stuff not being discussed atm because of the obsession with Madeleine McCann. It is crazy imo.

So, nuclear power. Where do you stand on it Eleusis?

I think the govt are in the pockets of the nuclear industry. But if i say anything DC will come on and start ranting so best stay away.

ffs why cant we have wind power without people moaning about windmills spoiling their pretty views. Give'em a nuclear power station instead and see how they like that. Lets have one in the home counties.

I think that nuclear power is probably our only existing viable alternative to fossil fuels. I also am very concerned about Russia's increasing power over the West. We are becoming more and more dependant on Russia for our oil. And that scares me.

Oh, but I do agree that people who complain about the wind farm impact on their pretty lanscape are being rather silly. Seems a small price to pay.

I agree about Russia - Putin seems to get more and more bolshy and their human rights and standards of democracy seem to be getting worse and worse but that is a whole other thread.

I think that nuclear being the only meaningful alternative is absolutely right and despite the fact that I really don't like the idea of nuclear power stations I can't actually disagree with Golden Brown on this one. Getting away from dependancy on any other nation for our power requirements is our only option for the future.

Oh, but Callisto, it is not a whole other thread. That is just the point. We need Nuclear to get away from Russia.

How will oil get to the West when Russia controls all the pipelines. Let us not forget what happened to the Ukraine and had knock on effects in Western Europe last winter??

Ad, speaking of Russia, wher the F was EU a few weeks ago when they were bullying Estonia???? LAst time I checked Estonia was part of the EU, and the EU sat there and diod nothing... What was that about? Is the EU scared of Russia?

I know, the bully boy tactics that Putin employs are pretty dispicable. The Chechen journo (shamefully I have forgotten her name) who was assassinated, the dreadful treatment of all of the old ussr countries. I worried as soon as I heard that Putin was ex KGB and he has really lived up to it.

I think that the EU has finally told Putin that an attack on one EU nation is an attack on all of them but really, talk about lily-livered behaviour. It is also looking as though the CPS is going for a prosecution on the killers of Alexander Litvinenko, despite alleged govt pressure to do the opposite. We shall see.

we are creating a terrible legacy for our children in terms of badly stored nuclear waste. The funding and research into other options has not been fully exhausted because there is no financial incentive to do so.

Exactly, there are other possibilities for the future. But they require research and development. The only thing we have here and now is nuclear.

Home counties nuclear power stations now mainly closed down - Dungeness (Kent), Bradwell (Essex). They need to be by the sea for cooling reasons, apparently so you won't get one in Bucks. The plants will probably be largely run/set up by the French as the UK ran its nuclear industry down in the 1980s.

The problem with a lot of the sustainables is that you don't get a big power return for a huge investment so it takes longer to see any profits. With nuclear the short-term huge investment is more quickly paid back, plus the money is there to invest in the first place. The technology is tried and tested also which brings the cost down. Unfortunately I think in 50 years time nuclear waste will be the least of our worries.

Ruty - I would be interested to see the proof to back your claim that the govt is in the pocket the nuclear industry. I don't for a minute disbelieve you, but things are not as clear cut as this imo.

If you are looking for a government who is in the pocket of the nucleaar industry, I suggest you turn your attention to the new President Sarkozy of France.
