MuminBrum · 02/05/2007 14:21

Sorry, DrDaddy, you're not providing me with overwhelming evidence. If you look at the Faraday medal winners, quite a few of them are media whores rather than real scientists - Robert Winston anyone?

kimi · 02/05/2007 14:25

ooooh my hairdresses mom works with Dr R and by all accounts he is lovely

MuminBrum · 02/05/2007 14:30

I'm sure he is lovely but that wasn't my point! Furthermore, he is not a female role model - perhaps we should get back to the point?

kimi · 02/05/2007 14:31

Lily savage, what a woman

CharlotteSometimes · 02/05/2007 14:31

Miep Gies (the woman who helped the Frank family) would be hard for anyone to best.

DrDaddy · 02/05/2007 15:17

MuminBrum - I admit, she's nothing compared to Dorothy Hodgkin who was a Nobel laureate, but are you suggesting that women who achieve stature in academe and then do much to popularise science should not be viewed as potential role models? (Whatever your opinion of the ultimate quality of their scientific research, which I'm sure can't be that bad.)

You work in the field of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research I take it?

LynetteScavo · 02/05/2007 16:37

Female role models, as in somebody we would like our DD's to model themselves on. This is such a tough one. There have been so many women mentioned that I hope my DD does not model herself on! I'm going to have to have a really long hard think!- And I can't believe I've never thought of this before!

IcingOnTheCake · 02/05/2007 17:10

how about jade goody

IcingOnTheCake · 02/05/2007 17:11

or vicky pollard!

Oblomov · 02/05/2007 17:13

I can't even really think of one. That makes me really sad.

condi is widely reported to have been extremely mediocre in her last job before she entered politics. and unfortunately mediocrity is the order of the day in the Bush admin.

in fact i doubt she would be where she is if she hadn't been in the right place at the right time, i.e. Bush wishing to use her as a political decoy. Powell, a black man, her predecesor, had far higher moral principles than she does. He was pushed around and couldn't keep up with the Neo-Cons which is why he had to go. She on the other hand has been in the pocket of the Neo-Cons for a good many years which is why she has got so far.

It would be politically naive to suggest she has got to where she is through intellectual ability. It just isn't true, which is why I think it is strange to put her forward as a female role model of any variety.

For me a female role model apart from being very accomplished in their career and a good mother, would also have to be interested in women's issues (i.e. a bit of a feminist) and she clearly isn't interested in women's issues.

yellowrose · 02/05/2007 17:26

I am putting forward Gabriel Palmer, the author of "The Politics of Breastfeeding" - her book makes me cry. Anyone mentioned her so far ?

PrincessPeaHead · 02/05/2007 17:40

I can't believe you are all saying susan greenfield is not worthy of being a role model because she is a "media whore" "but she has great legs and good taste in leather jackets"

can't you hear how misogynistic you are being? can't you accept that she has achieved a lot, even though you may not personally agree with some of her science?

women putting down women, I'd say, is at least 50% of the reason why there aren't more women in positions of authority and respect. you just can't resist the bitchy dig and it just validates the POV of the male misogynists out there. you should be ashamed of yourselves

CLara Furse, Marjorie Scardino, Gail Rebuck, Queen Rania of Jordan, Heather Hallett, Elizabeth Butler Sloss, Camilla Batmangelidjh, JK Rowling, Julia Peyton-Jones, Sam Taylor-Wood, Condaleeza Rice, Jacqueline Wilson...

there are lots of female role models in every sphere. but no doubt you lot will find some pithy put down about all of them, because you are all so high-achieving, charitable, perfectly dressed, and with marvellous legs

PeterAndreFanCLub · 02/05/2007 17:41

sam taylro wood no fakring wya

LynetteScavo · 02/05/2007 17:42

I'd consider Hillary Rodham Clinton to be a better role model for my DD than Condoleza (sp?)Rice
Ina May Gaskin - the midwife
My sister
and genuinely, Kylie Minogue (the others all have bad dress sence)

PrincessPeaHead · 02/05/2007 17:43

why do you have to be a good mother to be a role model ffs?

you can be a shit mother but a fantastic artist, or (god forbid) have no children at all but be a thoroughly admirable person

why do you all have this ridiculous idea that to be a role model you have to score top marks in every aspect of your life? Isn't that just setting your daughters up for a lifetime of failure and inadequacy, as they certainly will NOT score top marks in every aspect of their lives. Doesn't mean they won't be excellent, strong women

I think you are all NUTSO

PeterAndreFanCLub · 02/05/2007 17:43

oh god pph oyu missed the fakring joradna thread

PeterAndreFanCLub · 02/05/2007 17:44
