They were talking about this on the Wright Stuff this morning, they were asking if 'Fatism' can be compared to other forms of discrimination, so should there be laws protecting fat people.

Of course this is true! I'm so very much fatter now, with 6m old ds2, than I was before I had 3 children, and definitely very much more stupid too, so the stupidity must be caused by the fatness. Oh, and did you know that fat people sleep less, too?

i think all current anti-discrimination law should be scrapped and replaced with one law.

seriously. no discrimination on any unjustifiable grounds - eg advertising for a female care assistant to provide presonal care to a vulnerable female who has requested a female carer - iyswim.

beyond this type of 'discrimination' (which isn't really, is it!) there should be nothing.

I don't think that laws protecting fat people are really what we need.

What we need is for people to realise that the idea of the fat, lazy person who does nothing but sit on their arse eating, drinking, smoking and watching crap TV is not always a true one.

My sister once worked for a lady who wouldn't employ fat people because "fat people are lazy". What's lazy is to stereotype in such a way that you tar everyone with the same brush - whether it's because they're fat or for any other reason.

I'm sure there are some fat people who are lazy, unintelligent arseholes who drink, smoke and eat pies. But there are plenty of thinner people who are also lazy, unintelligent arseholes who drink, smoke and eat pies. There are also plenty of fat people who walk their kids to school instead of driving everywhere, who have never smoked, don't drink, and can't stand pies.

We don't need anti-discrimination laws. We just need to have a bit of respect for each other, no matter what our differences are.

Yes, Oh my, I am now the stupidest person I know. It has gone beyond help for me, alas, as I can no longer muster the intelligence to decode the Slimfast diet. I am caught in a spiral of thick and fat, thick-and-fat, thickandfatthickandfat. Eventually I expect to be a non-sentient gelatinous lump the size of Mansfield.

Whilst I disagree with the businessman's views, I don't think there should be discrimination legislation.

Why?

Because fat people do have the option to change down to a reasonable size.

They don't have to be obese (excepting the relatively few who do have medical conditions).

Just like smokers can quit.

On the other hand, non-whites can't be anything else. You see them, and one of the first thing you register is that they are not-white.

Gay people can't have a gastric bypass to make them lose homosexuality, etc.

To me, discrimination legislation needs to cover traits that cannot be altered.

Fat isn't one of them.

just picking up on your point expat, hasn't there recntly been some research to prove that there is a fat gene, that makes it considerably harder for some to lose weight.
