Ok guys, we have been very lucky to discuss this, please lets not give anyone anything to complain about, Mhq have been more than accomodating.

Great post Boffinmum

oakleaffy · 26/07/2017 14:51

Boffin Mum..What is wrong with the education system that so many people seem to be unable to grasp the simplest facts? ..has there really been so much 'dumbing down' in society?
I too noticed the many 'vaccination' comments out in networld.

MidnightAura · 26/07/2017 14:51

Thanks for the new thread, just catching up.

Have they finally agreed Charlie has to go to a hospice and not home? Or are they still pushing for home.

Well done the nurses volunteering to give him care outside the hospital.

fenneltea · 26/07/2017 14:51

I'm beginning to think that the best thing for Charlie would be to slip away quietly at gosh, the whole farce is getting totally ridiculous now and his suffering continues.
Even an hour can seem like an eternity when you are suffering, how anyone can deliberately prolong things if there's the slightest chance that a loved one is in pain is beyond me.

I really hope the judge acts firmly and decisively to stop all this nonsense. It should be what is best for Charlie, nobody else.

LapinR0se · 26/07/2017 14:52

Honest to God, I thought there would be the hearing on Monday and then the family would go back to the hospital and turn off the equipment keeping him alive.
I genuinely thought I would wake up on Tuesday and he would be gone. I really can't see the benefit of all of this, all it's doing is heaping stress on an already horrendous situation.

NiceViper · 26/07/2017 14:52

"So, just to check, it looks like they (C&C) are wanting Charlie to go to a hospice now?"

I think they want to be somewhere other than GOSH. I can see why they would want this.

The hospice plan worked on the idea that he would be extubated shortly after his arrival and would die very shortly after that. The parents, it seems, want to have some time with him in the hospice - more than minutes after the GOSH transfer team leave. I can see why they want that too.

To me it hinges on whether Charlie's pain can be adequately controlled (as far as it can be understood) during transfer (ie should a move be attempted at all), and if so, how long should his life expectancy be once the transfer is completed (ie the team leaves)

The purpose of this whole plan is the circumstances of the death of Charlie. I'm not sure how relevant insurance etc questions are in that scenario. The poor child is going to die in a matter of days whatever this afternoon's decision.

The hospice might have put a deadline on how long they can keep a space empty to receive Charlie, but once he's there the timing can be flexible, just as it is an unknown for every single hospice.

SKY report that there is possibly a doctor adequately qualified to superintend and a nursing team (made up of agency and GOSH staff on their days off). The judge will have to assess if that is indeed adequate to give more hospice time.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/07/2017 14:52

I don't think patience and compassion is working very well for Charlie. I think to act decisively and quickly would be preferable

I completely agree

Mama1980 · 26/07/2017 14:52

I haven't commented before but have been following. As a mother whose eldest son was only saved by GOSH s intervention I have nothing but respect and admiration for the doctors and nurses who work there.
I hope the judge today acts decisively.
I feel so desperately sad for Charlie's parents, they are living every parents worst nightmare but enough is enough, this has to be about Charlie.

TinselTwins · 26/07/2017 14:53

Do hospices actually have resident doctors ?

I don't think so, but they won't be able to look at "normal" hospices anyway will they?

Most end of life doctorey things are done now by nurse practitioners with prescribing qualifications - they're not in anyway ITUey though

Saucery · 26/07/2017 14:53

Those GOSH nurses are behaving admirably. The parents have always said they value their care and I hope they can continue to provide continuity and understanding.

Oakleafy, I think it's grounded in anti-intellectualism and aided by poor US text books. I have had to analyse some them in my day job and they truly are shocking. In the case of the UK people have no excuse as our text books are high quality as a rule and we have a more effective market in qualifications.

Chestervase1 · 26/07/2017 14:55

I think the Judge should rule that Charlie stays at GOSH. It's becoming farcical now with demands, more doctors being produced etc. Hospices don't provide intensive care units - how can one be set up with their own staff. I'm baffled

officeshoes · 26/07/2017 14:55

I can't imagine a week being granted, surely not?

TinselTwins · 26/07/2017 14:55

my thoughts right now are

  1. if it was ruled that it would be inhumane to keep charlie on life support for experimental meds, does that not mean that it's also inhumane to keep him on life support because Connie wasn't time credits for the time she's chosing to spend in court?
  2. if the aim is to get away from GOSH then why are they asking for a plan involving GOSH stafff on their days off?
Ellie56 · 26/07/2017 14:56

Yes I saw that date somewhere Millie

MrsSthe3rd · 26/07/2017 14:56

Lets face it, there will be no agreement until the parents get it their way. That is only acceptable if there's no change in Charlie throughout the transfer.

What on earth has happened to them wanting to spend more time with him - It seems Chris is possibly doing that, if Connie has been by herslef at court the past two days.

BertrandRussell · 26/07/2017 14:57

If he has any awareness at all surely it would be better for him to be somewhere familiar?

Oakleafy We can blame the Texas School Board

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 26/07/2017 14:58

I've just seen the part about a week at the hospice.
I have to sit on my hands again....

Saucery · 26/07/2017 14:58

I' m almost at the point where I think if they want it on their conscience that they are likely to be causing their child pain and distress then that's up to them. Except it isn't up to them, or about them.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/07/2017 14:58

The GOSH nurses are admirable but I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't put myself in that position.

IdentifiesAsYoda · 26/07/2017 14:58

BoffinMum

Hear hear

I also agree that this has echoes of the Wakefield/autism affair
