Ok guys, we have been very lucky to discuss this, please lets not give anyone anything to complain about, Mhq have been more than accomodating.

Have the parents requested transfer to another PICU before because of breakdown in communication or is it just for end of care

Chester, GOSH have said previously that they haven"t been able to find any other hospital willing to take him, but it's not clear if they were looking because the parents requested it, or on their own initiative.

BubblesBuddy · 26/07/2017 12:03

I think the best opinion of Dr Hirano comes from Judge Francis. Basically Hirano offered "hope" but had not seen Charlie until July, nor seen his notes or had consultations with GOSH Doctors. Whatever he says, he did not fully engage with Charlie's illnesss until the judge ordered him to do so because, until he did, his evidence was worthless.

I think the parents would break an embargo on reporting. It will be interesting to see if it is imposed today but I feel restrictions now are far too late. The parents went public in January so that informed choices all the way along. The parents want to name and shame "evil" GOSH and it shows no signs of abating.

The Times articles are interesting. I agree the Bucks Baby is a different scenario but I think the article was written from this mum's individual perspective and people have commented that they feel her baby's situation was different. It does show that parents can work with Doctors though.

Judge said hearing would start at 2pm, but they may well be having discussions etc before that. You would usually ask a client to arrive early so it's possible the parents have tweeted they're arriving at 1pm or similar.

Thanks office

cjt110 · 26/07/2017 12:06

TheNightmanCometh Could be.

onalongsabbatical · 26/07/2017 12:06

All the nurses and doctors they're ringing up to try and get them to 'help' Charlie - telling them what's needed - do they think all these people have been on Mars for the last six months, and don't know about him?

Fancythat69 · 26/07/2017 12:07

@Oakleaffy that was me Blush I joined so I could comment, as someone said earlier - you can't argue with stupid

Maryz was that Pistonheads? I've just read a couple of pages too and feeling a bit drunk on it! The quoting of everyone else, suppose it's just a different way of presenting things. Mostly guys I guess? Is it spies!! How intriguing.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 26/07/2017 12:11

I can't stop reading because I genuinely, genuinely can't believe people think it's just that simple? How do you try and reason and have sensible discussions with people like that?

You can't. It's pointless. There's none so blind as those who can't see.

kesstrel · 26/07/2017 12:11

Derxa that Guardian article made me uncomfortable. For example, where he says

The hospital should reflect on how this tragic situation spiralled out of control.

Well, actually I suspect they've been doing quite a lot of that. And the reality is that in some cases it doesn't matter how tactfully and sensitively you've tried to handle things, you're still going to end up with patients and relatives angry and resentful. That may or may not be the case here, but the automatic assumption he seems to be making with other quotes that it's always the hospital that's at fault is unreasonable. The worst part of it is that no matter how much a patient may be relaying a skewed or mistaken view to the media, confidentiality normally makes it impossible for the medical team to put their side.

I know the thread has moved on but someone asked if the threats received were because of our research or this case,

Bit of both really, Many years ago when my research area was in its infancy the Vatican condemned it on religious grounds. The research has moved on but the extreme religious zealots and pro-lifers haven't.

With Charlie's case gaining more recognition the number of threats to different research areas has increased. We are completely used to it and know how to take the proper precautions.

However the telephones in our offices has had to be switched off as folk are trying to persuade my colleague "to go and save Charlie". Poor man he hasn't actively worked in that medical field of expertise for 30+ years so you do wonder where they get their info from.

Flowers to everyone just cos I can

Derxa that Guardian article made me uncomfortable. I suppose it is just one person's experience and he may be a journalist with an agenda.
However...

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 26/07/2017 12:16

I don't think I've ever seen it said explicitly that we can't link to other fora, I think it just depends on what the forum is saying?

Yamayo · 26/07/2017 12:16

Maryz thanks for the Latin grammar... 😁
It cheered me up on this gloomy lunchtime.

CremeFresh · 26/07/2017 12:18

I feel so sorry for the GOSH staff, I can't see what they have done wrong , apart from being unable to provide a miracle cure. Will it affect their decision (if indeed they even have a say ) in accepting patients with other terminal illnesses , for fear this will happen again ?

kesstrel

yes, it doesn't seem to occur to him that there can be a big gap between 'being told' some info and 'hearing it' especially when you've just had some life shattering news given.

Which isn't to say Drs and hospitals are perfect - far from it. But I suspect that nothing GOSH could have done differently would have satisfied C&C.
