This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

I'm glad to see GOSH have been able to respond to the criticism they have been facing. Essentially this problem affects medics every time a patient goes to the papers/fb etc to complain about something they don't like. Even if it's completely made up the confidentiality rules mean there is no come back and you end up with a completely one sided story. Generally with the media on the patients side very heavily. It's incredibly stressful and I'm sure GOSH will have staff resigning/ off long term sick due to stress as a result of all the abuse.

I was quite shocked at recent footage of C and C, they both look like they are not sleeping or eating due to the immense stress they are under. If only someone close to them could help direct them away from the media, and to trust what the specialists are saying. They have no reason to lie. It's time to allow that poor wee boy to go, peacefully without any more delays

If they did, it doesn't look like a direct c&p - there are errors.
They may have had advice as to what to say, but without having it written for them?

My heart aches at the thought of Charlie's parents hunched over their screens, sending out statements, posting on social media sites. I wish they would just concentrate on Charlie. There's a strong possibility that these are his last few days with them - as PPs have said, they need to be making memories, not posting on FB.

If people resort to Social Media to get their point across, they open a Pandors's Box. Especially on a very contentious matter like this one. I would prefer to stick to the facts that have been reported. I do think CG has not helped with rational debate by calling people "evil" in court. When disputes like this happen, and they do, most of the time it is held in open court but people are not using SM to drum up support and money. This is the difference here.

I would prefer not to see Facebook posts quoted here but I think talking about the legal issues is fair. Closing down the legal debate is censorship which is not welcome.

Someone has spoken firmly to Chris Gard about distancing himself from UKIP man, I'm sure of it. And I'm equally sure someone has spoken firmly to Laura Gard about the legal problem her group has become. She clearly still doesn't agree, hence the video, but she's making a show of complying at least.

I don't think anyone can speak firmly enough for Connie to hear anymore, and I mean that so sympathetically.

I feel so sad and angry that no one made them see all this sooner. Maybe people tried but if their own sister is one of the online ringleaders then it seems unlikely. I have good friends who would hold my face and speak the truth to me with tears rolling down their faces until I listened. They would take away my phone, I'm sure of it.

Whoever could have helped the parents missed their chance a long time ago and now it's all a hideous mess; so many additional layers of trauma for them to recover from.

Thank goodness the judgement is only a couple of days away, for all their sakes.

I think if there is ever a similar case the Judge must now seriously consider a complete media blackout. This would have been over a long time ago if it weren't for the emotional vampires of certain FB groups and American/ Italian rabidly pro life fringes. And it's not any of them who have to come to terms with the outcome.

I so hope tomorrow is a quiet day in this case. I so hope they can spend the day peacefully with their little boy.

The family had already gone public way before the court case in April. You really cannot have a media blackout when it is in them public domain already. Do you think the parents would have stuck to it? They wanted the publicity.

But I am a supporter of letting the child slip away peacefully. Which is what should have been done months ago really. That poor child, my heart breaks. He is forgotten but the mob have taken over.

It's really hard and harrowing for
C&C, don't imagine they ever thought they'd cause such a shitstorm. And the poor baby, why can't they see how poorly he looks.

I'm not on FB, so if this gets 'migrated' there, I guess all I can say is it's been good having this discussion with y'all.

But I hope it can stay here. It appears that we're getting very close to the end of this very sad, tragic situation. It would be nice to 'be together' when the decision comes through.
