This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

No reason has been given for the change of time from any of the parties involved so it's a bit of a mystery. We'll have to wait and see.

SomeDyke · 24/07/2017 12:33

Don't forget that we have had the reports on the new scans since the meeting that Hirano attended Monday/Tuesday. Hence I would expect that they will want to ask Hirano what might have changed now he has seen the reports on these new scans.............

BubblesBuddy · 24/07/2017 12:35

We will just have to wait and see. Won't we?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/07/2017 12:39

Don't forget that we have had the reports on the new scans since the meeting that Hirano attended Monday/Tuesday

Yes, that's true ...

Just catching up on the last couple of hours...

Nellie that prayer is beautiful and very much in the vein of what I have been praying. I don't claim to KNOW what is right and I am just praying that God would bring peace and mercy to all involved.

IceCream I am a little jealous of your working with the lovely Dr Ranj, and ever so pleased to hear that he is indeed lovely!

Jedbartletforpresident · 24/07/2017 12:44

Planning to follow along with JR and IanWoods on twitter - someone above mentioned a BBC correspondent - who is that? Anyone have a twitter link for them? JR and IanWoods are both Sky aren't they?

Lelloteddy · 24/07/2017 12:47

Thank you for the clarification MNHQ. Very clear. Smile

Yamayo · 24/07/2017 12:47

JR is BBC.

Yamayo · 24/07/2017 12:48

Someone on the JR Twitter feed mentioned another Sky journo @skyrobcatherall.

SomeDyke · 24/07/2017 12:51

.........and remember he did say earlier that he wasn't an expert as regards interpreting 'scans' and/or MR images, so would want the opinion of a pediatric neurologist.

If you recall the earlier confusion on here as to his statement that he didn't 'see' evidence of structural brain damage but on an image, as I recall the hypothesis was, where you wouldn't necessarily see such evidence. Now that there is a much more recent 'scan' (by which I mean the EEG as well as the MRI) and reports on the scans, I would have though that they would want to ask Hirano if his opinion of the case, or willingness to offer treatment etc had changed based on these reports, and if so why. They would have to ask him, surely, for the sake of transparency and completeness.

I admit a lot of this is pure hypothesis based on the slightly confusing glimpses and quotes we are getting of the full process, but unless I have misunderstood earlier quotes, I think this is a reasonable hypothesis.

Although as Joshua Rozenberg has pointed out, they knew the time difference when the judge gave 10.00am for the start of the hearing previously. We will have to wait and see..................

friendlysnakehere · 24/07/2017 12:51

Thanks @MNHQ, when you get a minute can you have a look at the other issue from this thread that I emailed you about last night.

Thank you Flowers

Jedbartletforpresident · 24/07/2017 12:53

Thank you Yamayo - I saw in his wee bio that he was BBC but then saw a tweet saying he was reporting it for sky news and got confused!

blueskyinmarch · 24/07/2017 12:53

We need a new thread soon. Anyone up for getting it started before the court goes in to session?

BubblesBuddy · 24/07/2017 12:53

Just to be clear - what issue?

Jedbartletforpresident · 24/07/2017 12:54

JR - Charlie Gard: I shall be covering the hearing for @SkyNews today. Scheduled to resume at 2pm. Judge said last week he hoped to rule tomorrow

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 24/07/2017 12:56

Somedyke - relevant to the first bit, I will say again that the Italian person is a paed neurology head of dept.
But their name is a secret so shhh Wink

cjt110 · 24/07/2017 12:56

Bubblesbuddy I would envisage a situation where professional mediators are used rather than judges. Less adversarial and they are much more experienced in ensuring that both sides feel that they are being listened to.

Writerwannabe83 · 24/07/2017 12:57

It was my understanding they are starting earlier to allow discussion via video link with Dr H. I got the impression that if he wasn't allowed to be cross examined by Armstrong then it would open up an opportunity for the Garda to start making claims about an unfair trial etc.

I think as has been said, that JR is trying to do everything to can to make things watertight and leave no room for further appeals.

Yamayo · 24/07/2017 12:57

Jed just realised from tweet that JR is reporting for Sky.
I assumed he would for BBC- in which case I don't know who they have and why are Sky poaching their correspondent? Confusing...

It's very Woolly and unclear. Hope not deliberately so.
