Grenfell Tower: 16 Council inspections failed to stop use of flammable cladding

I'd love to see little ones swimming lengths. Not just millionaires. Little cuties out-doing them. A little kid out-swimming Maria.

BigYellowJumper · 22/06/2017 04:53

OK, seriously, I cannot believe some of the comments from people in that Guardian article.

'I paid loads so why shouldn't everybody else?'

I don't know, maybe because those people LOST EVERYTHING IN A FIRE and are now HOMELESS????

Some people are just so...like, I don't get it. At all. Their whole mindset is just baffling to me. Especially since so many of them come from privileged backgrounds who've had tons of money off their parents, private educations...and yet they STILL moan that stuff isn't fair.

user1496484020 · 22/06/2017 04:56

They have absolutely no shame.

RhythmAndStealth · 22/06/2017 04:59

Hello Big

This helped me understand how privileged people see fairness.

Yet I am sure there are Maria's reading.

They won't infect you with anything, don't worry love.

BigYellowJumper · 22/06/2017 05:02

On sub-letting: I would be very surprised if at least some of the flats weren't being sublet. It is really common in London and I know at least two people who are living in sublets.

BigYellowJumper · 22/06/2017 05:07

rhythm Oh I know how they see it. It just never continues to amaze me that people REALLY think like that.

Maybe because I am Scottish? We are a bit more egalitarian in Scotland, at least outwardly so.

RhythmAndStealth · 22/06/2017 05:11

Snap Big. That would be my observation too.

Where you from?

OP posts:
BigYellowJumper · 22/06/2017 05:21

Glasgow area.

RhythmAndStealth · 22/06/2017 05:33

Me too, originally.

Anyways, from the Herald

Grenfell must not go unheard

From the BBC

A number of inquests were have been opened and adjourned, with the coroner finding:
Retired lorry driver Anthony Disson, 65, died from inhalation of fire fumes
Farah Hamdan, a 31-year-old nursery nurse, died from smoke inhalation
Her husband, Omar Belkadi, 32, who worked as a courier, died from inhalation from fire fumes
Abufars Ibrahim, a 39-year-old shopkeeper, had been visiting his mother in the tower. The coroner said he had been found at the foot of the building and died from multiple injuries
Khadija Khalloufi, a 52-year-old married woman, also died from inhalation of fire fumes

The people moaning about survivors being rehomed are everything that is wrong with this country.

Rhythm 4.29 - another very good post.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 22/06/2017 07:40

Re the inquests- what are fire fumes? SadSad

monicabling · 22/06/2017 07:43

wow cannot believe some of the responses to the survivors getting those lovely new homes. It's the bloody least they can do after what has happened. I wish TM would give them complete ownership and really put peoples nose out of joint.

RhythmAndStealth · 22/06/2017 07:49

I'm not sure Suit, but there are reports that the cladding could have produced hydrogen cyanide.

This is taken from the Scotsman:
"A highly toxic gas released by insulation on the outside of the building is believed to have contributed to a number of deaths.

The boards, fitted during a refurbishment of the tower, could have produced enough deadly hydrogen cyanide to fill every flat, it has been reported.

Richard Hull, professor of chemistry and fire science at the University of Central Lancashire, told Sky News: “The outside wall of the building had 150mm of PIR foam (fitted), and once the fire had spread to that every flat would have its own source of PIR foam, which would have produced enough hydrogen cyanide to kill all the people in that flat.”

Manufacturer Celotex stated that the insulation would have released “toxic gases” if it caught fire.

King’s College Hospital confirmed to Sky News that three of its 12 Grenfell patients were treated with the hydrogen cyanide antidote Cyanokit."

God, those people complaining about free flats, would they fancy a side order of haunting trauma, PTSD, smoke/toxin inhalation and bereavement with their new keys? No, then STFU you utter cuntweasels.

Do agree that the subletting issue is incomparably knotty... many sick fakers and fraudsters scuttled out of the woodwork after 911 to claim relief/benevolence money for an invented family member. There will have been layers of informal subletting/Spareroom/Airbnb going on with no papertrail. I hope the authorities can access and trawl back through online listings to get a clearer picture of what subletting & where was going on. Then there's the word-of-mouth friend/family grapevine that would leave zero trail.

Just goes to show what an utter mess housing is in this country
Scores of people will have died with no one to miss or acknowledge or register them. Survivors without authorised tenant status not getting anything Sad

BurnTheBlackSuit · 22/06/2017 08:25

I hadn't realised before about the fumes. This keeps getting worse. So not only was the cladding flammable, it also produced toxic gases when burnt. How was it ever allowed as a building material??

user1478518843 · 22/06/2017 08:32

Housing in the luxury development I believed was earmarked to be 'affordable' this is completely different to social housing at rent is still based on market rates (but set slightly below, so very, very expensive rather than very, very, very expensive).

This means Grenfell residents aren't 'bumping' anyone on the social housing waiting list down the list.

Also Maria and Nick need to have a long hard look at themselves

Batteriesallgone · 22/06/2017 08:33

The cladding and the insulation were two separate materials although applied at the same time next to each other.

Needless to say, separate specialists had also given lots of warnings about the danger of using this insulation on tower blocks.

So they chose to use dangerous cladding and dangerous insulation for cost reasons.

RhythmAndStealth · 22/06/2017 08:39

Thanks for the clarification Batteries.

I would hope that all survivors without registered tenancy status get something. I would hope that registered tenants living elsewhere and renting their flats out illegally get nothing. But not sure how the police will determine that.

How anyone could begrudge the survivors anything, irrespective of their residency status, is beyond me. This video had me crying buckets.
