"I'm so glad there's some housing being freed up. "

Not sure "freed up" is the way to describe it, wouldn't it have been reallocated from those on the waiting list?

WellThisIsShit · 21/06/2017 18:52

Well that's my worry Monkey if you read further down my post, I hope I'm being cynical though.

HelenaDove · 21/06/2017 18:52

This is what i meant when i said the price will probably be paid by other potential tenants.

Instead of who it should be like the tenant organisation and the council.

MonkeyLovesRobot · 21/06/2017 19:00

WellThisIsShit

Sorry - I really am struggling to read anything correctly tonight.

mrsglowglow · 21/06/2017 19:10

Wellthisisshit yes in theory new private developments with a % of social housing is a good idea but reality shows it is not perfect. I've not seen any quite so blatant as the block you describe but I've seen housing developments where a couple of streets are for social housing and the snobbery and divide is glaring. There must be a better way and I hope planners of the future will get it right.

HelenaDove · 21/06/2017 19:26

Special discussion on Grenfell about to take place on Channel 4 news NOW!

HelenaDove · 21/06/2017 19:46

No more outsourcing and sub contracting imo

HoldBackTheRain · 21/06/2017 19:47

This reminds me in a way of Hillsborough - not that residents are being blamed (although thread 4 was uncomfortable toward the end) - but that the families didn't get justice for 27 years, and those responsible have yet to be punished. I hope and hope that justice is served for Grenfell a lot sooner and there is no cover up.

Albadross · 21/06/2017 19:51

I have tweeted - I think I interviewed in every paper going at the time, hence I still get emails/calls from journos but they wouldn't know we didn't ever get any of the money I guess. Plus I doubt Sky would be keen for me to say what they did after!

If any journos do read his, I'm VERY willing to talk about this

Catminion · 21/06/2017 20:01

I assume that the 'social housing' flats may have been largely earmarked for shared ownership rather than social housing for rent.

I used to pass some new blocks by the same developer and the flats were sale were lovely, river views, balconies etc and the social housing blocks had no view or balconies - different windows etc.

mrsglowglow · 21/06/2017 20:11

And a lot of people scoffed at Jeremy Corbyn's idea to the acquisition of empty homes. This action by our government you could say is not a million miles off his idea. I'm not clear on exactly who has purchased the blocks only that the people to lose out are those they were originally intended for. Whether they were for shared ownership or social renters originally.

HelenaDove · 21/06/2017 20:15

Just seen some screenshots of some really nasty comments about Grenfell residents getting these apartments.

Sad Angry

mrsglowglow · 21/06/2017 20:22

Just why would anyone begrudge any of these people anything? They have lost everything through no fault of their own and so many lives lost for a fire that was totally preventable. No matter what they get now will never be enough to make up for their suffering.

HelenaDove · 21/06/2017 20:23

Rehousing of Grenfell residents in Kensington apartments garners mixed response"

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jun/21/rehousing-of-grenfell-tower-families-in-luxury-block-meets-mixed-response

Christ there are some cunts about.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 21/06/2017 20:29

Hell yes Helena I can only imagine

I wish they could have been rehoused in somewhere nice and normal as the hate and bike bile will Kick off . But as we know we live in an imperfect world.

Our office cleaners friend is the Mum of the girl aged 12 that's missing - even in this large city it's a small world

She was working nights (the mum) god love her Flowers

MonkeyLovesRobot · 21/06/2017 20:29

"This action by our government you could say is not a million miles off his idea"

The blocks were social housing, not private residences weren't they - they are new builds that have not been brought by individuals yet - it's totally different in my eyes. The people it's impacted are the people on the housing list who have been waiting.

FirstShinyRobe · 21/06/2017 20:30

This is nothing like Corbyn's idea. These flats will always have been intended to be affordable housing (whatever that actually means). Just like when a large house builder outside of London builds affordables on a big site & hands them over to a housing association. It is being spun as something out of the ordinary, though, and that needs to be borne in mind.

It's part of planning. And, whilst I am firmly of the belief that there needs to be much more social housing being built and I am not convinced that the section 106 method is delivering sensible outcomes, it is not true that there isn't social housing being built. I'm not certain about in London, but I do know that parts of many large sites elsewhere are handed over to HAs. Yes, there are issues around these and stupid quirks arising due to non-pragmatic planning departments, but it is happening.

But, yes, there will likely be people who are bumped down the list because of this. Because it's not added to the planned housing stock.

BahHumbygge · 21/06/2017 20:36

I don't get the politics of envy thing that gets lobbed at the left. That kind of thing (begrudging Grenfell survivors a new flat) shows that it is the right who have the envy issues.

HandbagKrabby · 21/06/2017 21:18

Some people are so bitter and petty. I'm sure the arseholes moaning are sat comfortably at home that had no chance of becoming what Grenfell did.

Albadross · 21/06/2017 21:22

Just spoke to one of the victims - he lost his collection of Michael Jackson records, so someone contacted the MJ estate and they sent him a big hamper full of stuff!

CaveMum · 21/06/2017 21:25

Oh that's lovely Albadross, a small piece of consolation for that person.

eynesbury · 21/06/2017 21:34

A lovely gesture.

Got here quick too! From the states I assume?

GhostPower · 21/06/2017 21:34

Aww that's so nice of them to do that Albatross. That would have meant a lot to them.

I could be wrong, but couldn't this be used to save some lives?

Iirc ghost, it doesn't belong to LFB and couldn't get near the building
