While watching this morning's Eu debates an argument was put forward
that it was mainly the educated/qualified in the large cities like London
Edinburgh and Brighton voting to remain as they were the most mobile/
more likely to be moving to Europe for jobs etc
This is not necessarily this poster's view but it does seem these places
have more "knowledge "jobs than the provinces So I would like these
degree holding Mmnetters to disclose whether there is any truth in this?

I'm genuinely surprised by those who see this thread as insulting - because I don't see the correlation between 'has a degree = tendency to vote remain' as being a comment on intelligence, or cleverness, in any way.

For me, it is a commentary on 'options available' or 'employment portability and security', for which having a degree, or being highly self-educated in a less formal way, is a proxy measure. So those who have been well-served by the status quo, and have the means - both monetary and in terms of 'entry tickets to employment' - to be flexible in terms of new demands within the economy, tended to vote remain. Those who are not well served by the status quo have tended to vote leave.

Uff.

My mum is post doctorate and voted leave. I'm starting a BSc and voted leave. Husband is BA and was gonna vote leave but fell asleep Grin my dad has 3 degrees and I need to ask him what he voted - I recon leave also but I'll confirm.

incywinci · 24/06/2016 10:35

FT is reporting a correlation: the less well educated voted to leave in the highest numbers in the EU vote

Owllady · 24/06/2016 13:17

You can still be educated without a degree. Ignorance has nothing to do with education ime and I actually think it's ignorant to assume degree = educated, no degree = uneducated. Lots of very skilled people have no professional qualifications. Lots of unskilled people are actually really intelligent.
We both have degrees, but these assumptions really piss me off
People fought for the working classes (and women) to be able to vote and so they should be able to about things that will affect them it's called democracy and I'm proud to live in a country that practices it properly even if it means there are people in power and decisions made that I do not agree with.

I'm disappointed with the vote, but it's how it works. Stop sneering at other people you feel are less intelligent than you

Crusoe · 24/06/2016 13:19

Aunty and uncle also have no further education and they voted one for remain one for leave. This confirms to me that it's nothing to do with being educated or uneducated

Wibblewobble100 · 24/06/2016 13:24

Me, DH, DSis, DBro, Ddad, all have degrees, all voted remain
DMum, only one without a degree voted leave.... She is gutted this morning. Never really wanted out, didn't think it would happy, but wanted a strong message of discontent sent to the government. She feels super guilty that the rest of our quality if lives is seriously threatened.

EUcantbelieveit2016 · 24/06/2016 13:27

Degree & postgrad and dp is from Western Europe. I voted Leave. It's this arrogant, condescending and patronising view, that only the educated could understand why Remain was the right decision, that really annoys me.

YellowPrimula · 24/06/2016 13:33

Dh and I both degrees and professional qualifications , ds1 degree and ds2 sixth former all voted remain . Ds3 still at school and gutted at the result .

Parents , over 70 no higher education but good careers voted out , can't bring myself to speak to them at the moment despite living them dearly.

ExtraordinarilyIndecent · 24/06/2016 13:35

Only university educated member of my extended family, only remain voter...

It's the results of a YouGov survey Humphrey.

Did YouGove predict the last general election and this referendum correctly?
If not, then maybe they've got this wrong too.

fastdaytears · 24/06/2016 13:39

I don't think they have as it's backed up by the demographics of the areas which voted in/out. Lots of statistics around.

blowmybarnacles · 24/06/2016 13:45

Degree and postgrad - remain
DP - degree - remain

All friends voted remain
