While watching this morning's Eu debates an argument was put forward
that it was mainly the educated/qualified in the large cities like London
Edinburgh and Brighton voting to remain as they were the most mobile/
more likely to be moving to Europe for jobs etc
This is not necessarily this poster's view but it does seem these places
have more "knowledge "jobs than the provinces So I would like these
degree holding Mmnetters to disclose whether there is any truth in this?

London. Degree. Remain.

slamdunkthefunk · 24/06/2016 09:16

I do not have a degree and I voted remain.
A reason behind my decision was that amongst my friends and acquaintances, the ones on the remain side tended to be the more highly educated critical thinking types whose opinions I listen to and respect more than someone like Farage or Boris.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/06/2016 09:19

"I don't think it's about level of education, more about wider intelligence. All the intelligent people I know, regardless of their level of education, voted to remain."

Educated doesn't have to mean having A levels or a degree, it can also mean self-educated i.e. someone who reads quality newspapers rather than tabloids, does their own research, etc.

teacherwith2kids · 24/06/2016 09:22

I would say that amongst my wider acquaintance, the correlations suggested in the FT graphic hold true, including that for degree holders. I would also say that amongst my acquaintance, the correlation between degree educated and Remain was stronger than for a lower level of qualification and leave - I know no degree holders who voted leave, but some who have lower qualifications who voted Remain.

MiracletoCome · 24/06/2016 09:23

So is this shit degree from shit uni or top degree from Oxbridge, shouldn't you all be stating which you have.

teacherwith2kids · 24/06/2016 09:24

Educated doesn't have to mean having A levels or a degree, it can also mean self-educated i.e. someone who reads quality newspapers rather than tabloids, does their own research, etc.

i would absolutely agree with this. Through the series of jobs I have had, the friends I have met tend to be those who are formally or self-educated, simply because of the nature of the work. I therefore probably live in a 'Remain bubble'.

teacherwith2kids · 24/06/2016 09:24

Miracle, top degree and PhD from Oxbridge, if you need to know....

OhNoNotMyBaby · 24/06/2016 09:26

What a deeply unpleasant, stupid assumption - reinforcing the nasty prejudices of all those who have decided that all Brexiters are ill-educated racists - which isn't an ill-educated or racist assumption all, oh no. Shock

n0ne · 24/06/2016 09:27

Degree - voted Remain. All of my mates also have degrees+ and voted Remain. Family members without degrees all voted Leave.

Thornrose · 24/06/2016 09:29

Remain. No degree but I can read and make informed choices! My sister has no degree and voted remain. My 70 year old, non degree, DM reading mum was able to wade through the the shit and vote remain.

NapoleonsNose · 24/06/2016 09:38

Degree and remain here. My Daily Mail reading, O-Level qualifications only, 74 year old mother was also able to see through the lies and vote remain as well.

FaFoutis · 24/06/2016 09:42

1st degree & PhD, voted remain.
My family who didn't go to university voted leave.

There's seems to be a lot of truth in it.

PortiaCastis · 24/06/2016 09:42

Degree and ACCA and voted leave

FrayedHem · 24/06/2016 09:43

I scraped 5 GCSEs A-C and voted remain in vain. I think my local area was over 60% majority to leave (Essex).

PortiaCastis · 24/06/2016 09:45

Forgot to say degree from Exeter not a shit University and this is bollocks

MiracletoCome · 24/06/2016 09:46

This is worse than all the ageist threads about on MN

notagiraffe · 24/06/2016 09:46

Degree and post grad - remain.
DH - degree - remain
All close friends - degrees - remain
One close friend without degree - leave
Parents, family all with degrees - remain
Family without degrees - leave.

never realised how much we fired that profile.

notagiraffe · 24/06/2016 09:46

fitted not fired

eyebrowse · 24/06/2016 09:52

The problem is that the educated people have not been able to spread their understanding and world view to other people. Also DC appeared to be unable to understand the consequences of his policies which cut the public sector on the views of the population

electricflyzapper · 24/06/2016 09:56

I can only speak for my immediate family:

me - degree educated, voted leave
dh - degree, masters degree, voted leave
ds1 - university student, didn't vote but supported leaving
ds2 - about to become a university student, voted leave

And, for the record, none of us based our opinions on anything to do with immigration. Dh is an immigrant, apart from anything else, as am I 2 generations removed. It was purely based on economic criteria and the desire not to be part of the United States of Europe.

I believe it's this kind of thread/point of view that has contributed to the result we have today.
Any expression of a difference of opinion from the Remain camp has resulted in people being told they are thick or an idiot.
If someone calls you an idiot, you are likely to do one of two things, walk away from the discussion and simmer with resentment or hit them.
Today the simmering hit.
I voted remain. I have no qualifications beyond O levels.
I have however been clever enough to listen to others and try and encourage discussion without hurling insults.

polyhymnia · 24/06/2016 10:09

London, first degree Cambridge, PhD London.
Remain.

Toffeelatteplease · 24/06/2016 10:10

icouldabeenacontender

I totally agree.

PortiaCastis · 24/06/2016 10:17

Icouldnotbeacontender Totally agree.

Tigerblue · 24/06/2016 10:24

DH - degree and post grad - voted leave. We don't live in a city.
