It was mainly the educated/qualified who voted remain ? Poll please

While watching this morning's Eu debates an argument was put forward
that it was mainly the educated/qualified in the large cities like London
Edinburgh and Brighton voting to remain as they were the most mobile/
more likely to be moving to Europe for jobs etc
This is not necessarily this poster's view but it does seem these places
have more "knowledge "jobs than the provinces So I would like these
degree holding Mmnetters to disclose whether there is any truth in this?

Degree and postgraduate professional qualification. Remain.

concertplayer · 24/06/2016 08:25

Usual and the others I did not say that I personally approved this theory
Yes and when I first heard it I thought how insulting! Also I said nothing
about wealth either . Students for example
The theory put forward just suggested that those able or more able in the future to work alongside Europe were more likely to remain. This is a vote for self interest not necessarily idealism.
Personally I think alot of these mobile people will easily get work outside
the Eu anyway I fear with Leave there will be another brain drain of people we need for the future. Nurses teachers and docs to name a few

PhD, remain. My FB is full of very unhappy folk. The guy* who received Queen's honours for scientific achievements is especially distraught.

People like me will be fine, so will my kids. It's the working class who are shafted by this result.

How about a thread to figure out who the "elite" are supposed to be?

AppleSetsSail · 24/06/2016 08:32

This brand of sneering elitism cost the Bremain campaign dearly, it seems.

HumphreyCobblers · 24/06/2016 08:37

I have been thinking about that AppleSetsSail. It could well be true.

CremeBrulee · 24/06/2016 08:37

Degree and voted remain, DH the same

Figgygal · 24/06/2016 08:39

Remain

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 24/06/2016 08:39

Uneducated pleb here, I voted remain.

FrikkaDilla · 24/06/2016 08:40

DH - Phd, me - one degree - leave

HolaWeenie · 24/06/2016 08:41

GCSE's (barely), Essex, voted remain.

AppleSetsSail · 24/06/2016 08:45

I dropped out of school at 9 and voted Brexit. As you might expect. Wink

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 24/06/2016 08:46

Degree, professional post-grad qualification. Remain.

forkhandles4candles · 24/06/2016 08:52

PHD remain

JudyCoolibar · 24/06/2016 08:58

It's the nature of my work that everyone has a degree or a professional qualification. All of my colleagues and my friends in the same field voted remain, so that's at least 50 people.

Girlgonewild · 24/06/2016 08:59

Yes, and I saw that pattern all around me. We are disappointed but ironically it will sadly be those who voted for Brexit who are most likely to suffer financially most of all.
[Mind you already personally £12k down in first hour of stock market trading so let us see how far it will drop........]

JudyCoolibar · 24/06/2016 09:00

I considered all the issues and was well-informed before making my decision so stop saying that the Leave voters "didn't understand the issues". I don't want a body of people I didn't elect making decisions and laws for my country.

Oh, the irony. The second sentence totally contradicts the first. Which encapsulates the result in a nutshell.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 24/06/2016 09:00

Nope, I only have A Levels and a diploma in singing and I voted remain.

I assume you mean we couldn't have voted to leave in the absence of a democracy. Surely you can accept that this referendum was exceptional, historical and absolutely not representative of how the laws that govern the UK are made.

StinkyMcgrinky · 24/06/2016 09:05

Degree, post grad, masters - remain

However I do have friends who are degree holders who voted leave.

incywinci · 24/06/2016 09:06

Degree, remain.

I think you are probably right. Not your reasoning, I think the reasoning is because those more educated can see beyond the shite from the right wing media

IamAporcupine · 24/06/2016 09:07

I think the stats refer to 'university cities' not 'people with degrees' voting remain, which would def make sense as lots of academic work is supported by the EU

BaboonBottom · 24/06/2016 09:08

I didn't look at it as an education divide, i looked at it as those whose jobs would be immediately affected. E.g London voting to remain as theres a lot of jobs immediately linked to europe.

I don't believe its an education issue, and i think its insulting to say that. I think people vote because of what they see and feel is happening to their little bit of britain.

Its a shame David cameron can't go back to the table and go "see told you we wanted to leave, now, what can we do?" like you would in a business deal.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 24/06/2016 09:11

Already posted this in another thread but interesting graphic.

It was mainly the educated/qualified who voted remain ? Poll please
Gwenhwyfar · 24/06/2016 09:11

I have a degree and voted Remain. However, I'm temping and paid by the hour in a job that pays much below minimum wage and live in a deprived part of the city. I've been offended on MN with people making out I'm privileged. I work with other admin workers, all with about the same life chances and similar wages, but it's generally the less educated ones who wanted to leave (with admin workers you have anything from a few GCSEs to graduates). I think it has a lot to do with which newspapers you read.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/06/2016 09:12

"I think the stats refer to 'university cities' not 'people with degrees' voting remain"

No, that's not what the stats show.
