She's icky.

Piffle · 20/01/2007 21:15

expat I really wondered about Condi running too...
I just wondered about how the voting areas are arranged re Obama, although if he is as popular amongst many white voters as well as encouraging the black voters out in huge numbers.
I mena most US folk I've spoken to infact ALL thought Bush was a total no hoper both times...
So I am not sure that polling peoples opinions is a finger on the US voting pulse But it is good to see more diverse candidates appearing, rather just the rich mens sons and the big political dynasties...

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:17

What people here don't get, either, is that the US has a lot of ethnic groups besides black and white.

Hispanics, for example, are a huge voting power in the US, as are Asians.

Then there is the presence of large groups of Christians and Jews.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:19

I've personally found most people there no longer give a stuff about race.

Condi's been really cagey about her future.

And it's piqueing peoples' interests.

TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if she winds up running against Obama.

That's going to get interesting!

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:23

Good for her.
TBH - anything's better than the current choice!
God know's who'll win, I've given up guessing what the American people will do. They voted Bush back in fgs and Arnie is govoner of California. I mean come on, the majority of Americans appear to ever so slightly mad so let's not try and second guess them aye!

WelshBoris · 20/01/2007 21:25

"the majority of Americans appear to ever so slightly mad "

And for an example, let us present Expat

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:26

Arnie's been elected governor TWICE!

And he's married to the daughter of a Kennedy!

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:26

As my dear pal Feliz often says, 'I'm just a brown kid trying to make a living.'

suedonim · 20/01/2007 21:27

I think I can see that, Expat, re HC. She's a bit school-marmish.

Nigeria is having its presidential elections this April which will be...er...exciting. Candidates have mysteriously died already.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:28

Oh yeah so he has, even more worrying.
Dear God, what will they do next?
Really quite scary.

Heathcliffscathy · 20/01/2007 21:28

err. expat.

no i don't live there.

yes i do have close relatives there and yes we do discuss politics

i think it's grossly insulting to suggest that the fact that there isn't a white majority in the US means that as a nation it is less racist. because hispanics are never racist are they? nor koreans? nor blacks.

Was listening to a black american commentator this evening on the radio saying that obama did not have the black vote in the way that jackson or sharpton did because he does not come from the same civil rights background and is popular with many white democrats.

i would love to think that America was ready for a black or woman president. Frankly, I think the former is more likely, and wish you wouldn't get so f&cking snippy and owning of US politics.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:30

No offence expat but I have an urge to be very silly and do that whole 'go soph, go soph, go go, go sophhhh' thing

WelshBoris · 20/01/2007 21:32

Just do it anyway TeeCee.

Youve already suggested all her fellow Americans are mad. She'll be reporting you to OFCOM next

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:32

you don't know FA about living in America, soph, sorry.

and i NEVER said that people of colour can't be racist.

puhleeze.

there's plenty of racism is every ethnicity.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:33

they are mad, though.

californians most of all .

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:35

think it may wind up being Condi v. Obama.

but hilary?

not a chance.

people don't like her outside new york.

not sure why on the whole.

but they don't.

she's very unpopular in the South.

obama's also a 'family man' and popular w/the 'family values' people.

Heathcliffscathy · 20/01/2007 21:36

no. i just read and listen to people that do. and am related to people that do. and i live on a planet that is far worse off now than it was five years ago because of US policy (closely followed by our own).

I am therefore ENTIRELY entitled to comment.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:37

Do you know what, I didn't actually realise you were originally from the States Expat. Well you live and learn aye.
Where from btw?

And ps - thanks for not taking offence

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:41

You know, soph, no one is saying the US is w/o blame for many things.

But it seems that with you, they're responsible for ALL the world's ills. All the time.

Aside from being untrue, it's a tiresome argument.

So I'm going to agree to disagree and you can go on believing that Hilary will be Democratic nominee.

I'll be waiting for my absentee ballot in the post to vote for Obama.

I was born and raised in Houston, TX, TeeCee, aside from the years we lived abroad with my father's work.

I left Houston in 1989 to live in Austin, TX, home of the University of TX and liberal outpost in the state.

Then spent 8 years in Denver, CO before coming here.

The differences between Denver and TX?

Like night and day. Although, you travel 125 miles down the interstate to Colorado Springs, CO, and you get an entirely different flavour there.

The country is vast and there are HUGE regional variations.

suedonim · 20/01/2007 21:44

Now you're being California-ist, Expat. Ds1 and his dw et al will be most offended.

TeeCee · 20/01/2007 21:46

Thanks expat. My uncle lived in Dallas for a while and is now in Vegas. Anyway,........

Don't know anything about your man Obama. Will endeavour to change that.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 21:47

OMG, the regional differences between Californians - Northern and Southern California . . .

California also has VERY strict tobacco smoking laws.

But marijuana is a whole different ball of wax.

suedonim · 20/01/2007 21:59
Grin
GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 20/01/2007 22:08

I don't care if it's Hilary or Obama. A black or woman president will do for me, so long as they're a democrat.

Hopefully George W's mega-fuck-ups will put paid to any republican chance next time around. You can bet the Republican campaign will get dirty and personal, but hopefully all the democrats will need to do is show some footage of Iraq and Katrina to remind everyone why they should get rid of the tosspots. Personally, I'd absolutely love Hilary to win. She is one of the most dedicated and political candidates in absolutely ages, and I can see her making huge changes to the domestic front in the USA, especially for the people who really need it and especially where healthcare is concerned. What a difference that could make. I just hope it doesn't become a vote on personalities because she does lack 'people appeal' even though she would (in my humble view) make the finest president.

Piffle · 20/01/2007 22:10

great thread juxtaposition

We need to talk about Kevin
And Hilary is runing for president
