Yes glam, you have a good point.

I suppose more people watch BB than the News, sad but true.

(I watch both by the way )

MoreSpamThanGlam · 20/01/2007 17:55

Me too!

Freckle · 20/01/2007 19:25

I don't think this has been aired more because Jade Goody's racism is more horrifying than some child from an ethnic minority being killed. I think it's because it was being broadcoast ad infinitum in the name of entertainment. Because C4 edited it to maximise the effect of the bullying - whether it was racist or not (as I've said before, I don't care what hook you hang bullying on, it's devastating for the victim).

Perhaps one positive to come from this will be for people to look at their own attitudes towards other cultures and just maybe realise that, to one degree or other, we are all a little racist. It's part of the human condition. We group together with those similar to ourselves - which automatically means that we, subconsciously perhaps, move away from those who are different. It absolutely doesn't excuse the sort of behaviour displayed on CBB, but it might make some of us fight against our basic instincts (as in a survival instinct developed over thousands of years, but probably not so essential these days) and make us more inclusive.

mummylin2495 · 20/01/2007 19:43

i too watch the news and am very aware of wha terrible things are going on elsewhere in the world, and it doesnt make us less interested just because we have been watching big brother !

I think it's disingenuous to suggest that people who are interested in what's been happening in Big Brother are not interested in/don't also care about atrocities happening in this society or in other societies. At a politics lecture I attended at university, the lecturer claimed that the Sun's failure/refusal at the time (and probably still now) to print "real" news was incredibly political in that it was saying to the readership "this is what's important - what we don't print isn't", and that the readers knew that and made a deliberate choice, and at the time the Sun had the highest daily sales of any paper by a long way. As an 18 year old, that was something I'd never considered.
I think that by watching and commenting on and being affected by the goings on in the house, the public have shown an awareness of what is important - at a very basic level - after all, what are many wars if not an extreme version of bullying? And how much did people feel consulted about Iraq? At least we had a chance to vote on this one!

brandnewhelsy · 20/01/2007 20:12

Killed that thread stone dead, then .

mummylin2495 · 20/01/2007 20:12

good post brandnewhelsy not only did we get to vote ,we also helped charity!

I do agree that it is rather intense to suggest that, because there are huge issues out there, people can't be interest in/talk about other stuff.

Does that mean that, because there is a war in Iraq, we shouldn't stand up to be counted when it comes to racism, child abuse, inconsiderate parking, jobsworths, etc.? They all have their place in the scheme of things and I think it would be terribly sad if some of the "lesser" issues were ignored because we only feel we can shout about the bigger ones.

lulumama · 20/01/2007 20:17

aboslutely agree brandnewwelshy..also, this has got racism being talked about up and down the country, which can only be a good thing..

morespamthanglam As you can see from the posts below this ,us big brother watchers do not ignore all the rest of the world and its troubles.Unlike the three witches from the show we do have brains and can concentrate on more than one thing at a time.None of us need doom and gloom all the time

OP posts:
MoreSpamThanGlam · 20/01/2007 22:08

Oh ffs!!! All Im trying to say is that as far as I am concerned this thing with Jade (as vile as it is - I never said it wasnt) is nowhere near as horrific or newsworthy as other things happening around the world. I think its sad that for the last few days there has been nothing but Big Brother.

As for "Us Big Brother watchers" (like your some special little group) I also watch it, otherwise I wouldnt comment.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 20/01/2007 22:11

And who said anything about needing doom and gloom all the time? Do you think the Big Brother thing with Jade is happy and fun then???

You make this thing with Jade/Shilpa sound like a Roman Gladiator tournament to laugh and heckle at.

Mercy · 20/01/2007 22:19

Spam, well I think it is newsworthy actually, because it's generated debate about our society. Imo the debate isn't just about BB, it's about many things

Definitions of racism

Ditto bullying

The cult of celebrity

The moral responsibility of programme makers/sponsors etc

to name but a few topics

mummylin2495 · 20/01/2007 22:28

no i dont think it has been a happy programme at all actualy ,but it was meant to be,but as we all know it has turned out to be horrific.what i meant was that we cant be watchin the news all the time thats why we watched big brother for what we thought was going to be entertainment.not so this time.do you want to join my group ( along with thousands more ]

OP posts:
mummylin2495 · 20/01/2007 22:32

im not laughing about the jade and shilpa scenario at all i dont know where you have got that idea from, i think it has been disgusting as you will see if you find all my posts on this thread and the one which rached the 1000th yesterday.

Freckle · 20/01/2007 22:46

Can I just put this in context?

I read today in Private Eye in their Number Crunching vein - something like 3.6 million viewers tuned into CBB last Friday, but 3.8 million were watching Growing your own Veg: Potatoes on BBC2 at the same time. My question is - could anyone tell the difference??

PMSL Freckle!

Rosylily · 21/01/2007 10:32

Well I feel really uncomfortable at the moment.
I used to be glued to all the big brother shows.
I was bullied as a teenager but at college there were times when I've been part of the group that were excluding and slagging another person and at the time I didn't even recognise it as bullying and being complacent. I should have known better!

When young and ignorant I have thought and said some slightly rascist things even though now I know better and am married to a Pakistani.

Basically I can't bring myself to feel at all superior to these silly young girls.
The important thing is that they learn and grow from the experience because I think we are here for that and no-one is perfect.

LemonTart · 21/01/2007 10:44

RosyLily - you have made a really good point. BB is newsworthy and "important" because it draws our attention to really important issues in a personal way. We can all relate to at least a tiny part of what has being going on - whether as a victim or a bully, experienced racisim, that gang mentality etc and it does challenge our own experiences and opinions. All very healthy IMO. I am sure that is why it has made such a massive impact - because it is so easy to empathise, understand and relate to these issues and they all evoke a strong response in us. Whilst I am not going to support, excuse or slander Jade (anymore - I was really angry about it!) I can see why she has come in for so much stick. Not only are people upset at her behaviour but I think many people have unconsciously added their own experiences, frustrations, embarrassment etc on the top, colouring the original, awful actions by her.

curiosity · 21/01/2007 11:28

Two very good posts.

JoolsToo · 21/01/2007 12:56

for those of you still interested

oo-er!

AitchTwoOh · 21/01/2007 13:19

likewise, for those of you interested, here's film of jade pulling her 'i hate liars' schtick while bullying rik waller. there are loads of clips, actually, but this one where she laughs at him crying is particularly good.

here

noddyholder · 21/01/2007 13:24

has anyone seen her interview on the news?Seriously quite disturbing
