Do the Junior Doctors seriously think that they are still
respected for always putting the interest of their individual patient first?

Also- Lanchester - why shouldn't I be entitled to a pension? I'll have worked bloody hard for it!

Runningwithacheesegrater · 26/04/2016 14:25

What more money younggirl? Seriously, you keep insisting we are asking for more money, and that the Hunt is giving us a payrise. If that's the case we would have already signed the fucking thing wouldn't we?

Abraid2 · 26/04/2016 14:25

My daughter and several of her friends, all predicted at least AAA in science A levels, have pretty well decided not to apply for medicine at university after all. They feel it is a very tough and expensive training for an uncertain career and there are other ways they can give back to society. When she's been shadowing junior doctors, they've told her not go into medicine. Her school seems likely to have its lowest number of med school applicants for quite some years.

Which is good for those who still want to apply, of course. But if medical school applicants fall I wonder what that means for the future.

urbanfox1337 · 26/04/2016 14:26

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes I am not in favour of anything Jeremy Hunt does. I think he should be sacked. Along with that prick Gove. Eurgh.

That says it all, politically motivated ideology and nothing to do with the facts.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 26/04/2016 14:27

Feed I admit to not having read the study that Hunt is relying on. (I have read the contract though and I think it's very fair). I do think it's very obvious that even emergency cover is grossly over stretched at weekends and has been for some time. Do we really need a study to tell us that? Surely it's obvious that expensive machines with waiting lists to use them should run 24/7? (And yes, I know that needs more than just JD's and I get that - but surely making a start is the right thing to do?)

Abraid2 · 26/04/2016 14:27

BTW, I didn't mean my daughter not applying was the good news for people still wanting to apply for medicial school. Blush. Only that reductions in applicants meant those still dedicated to medicine as a career might make it a bit less of a fraught process.

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 26/04/2016 14:28

Urban I think so far his behaviour has been totally wrong regarding NHS.
And Gove what did he do that was positive?

urbanfox1337 · 26/04/2016 14:31

How long do junior doctors stay at that level before they become part time fatcat consultants?

JD's are acting like they are slaves being forced to work against their will for no money. Become a GP, run your own business and decide your own working hours. There is just no need to be blackmailing the country.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 26/04/2016 14:31

No running because we both know you don't think you are getting paid enough to work Saturdays. And that -magically - if you were, it would suddenly be both "fair" AND "safe". Now that's magic... Wink

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 26/04/2016 14:33

I only wish he were giving them a pay rise, but it's a pay cut...

Lyndie · 26/04/2016 14:34

The goady fuckery on this thread is incredible.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 26/04/2016 14:36

Lyndie - yes, if the word "goady" in your vocabulary simply means "people who have arrived at a different point of view to mine"!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 26/04/2016 14:39

When the salaries are being quoted, that is the basic salary. There are top ups from various additional payments. Plus the value of pension contributions. It's disingenuous to state that the basic salary is all that is received. That's a matter of fact and is not disputed by either the Government or the BMA.

I'd be interested to know how many posters have read (a) the new model contract and (b) the primary documentation issued by both the Government and the BMA.

For those saying that every hospital etc is covered, on what basis do you make that assertion? Contrary to various reports by consultants in various hospitals around England.

urbanfox1337 · 26/04/2016 14:41

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes - exactly you're not basing your opinion on facts, you're resorting to not liking the person. Baby, throwing, toys, pram...

Gove... well lets not derail this thread but he enabled parents to break free from failing councils and start their own school. Sounds like the doctors would like that freedom from Hunt as well.

Runningwithacheesegrater · 26/04/2016 14:41

Actually I think I'm being paid enough to work Saturdays at the moment. Don't want more, can't do less because the babysitter costs money. But what I don't want to do is work more weekends than I already do now. Because I'm about to burn out.

But don't worry. Your DH isn't a trainee so you won't be affected. And he has one of the cushier consultant jobs so hopefully he won't have to act down due to a lack of SpRs. So sod everyone else eh?

allthingsred · 26/04/2016 14:41

I completely support them. & tbh if they want dbl pay with weekends off I'd give it to them. These people have delivered our babies diagnosed/operated on/help to heal our sick children/parents/grandparents

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 26/04/2016 14:41

I have read both Gobbo and that is precisely why the mendacious bollocks being spouted irritates me so much.

urbanfox1337 · 26/04/2016 14:44

What does the word 'goady' actually mean? Its not in my OED (snob is though), guess junior doctors had a better education than me!

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 26/04/2016 14:46

Running I said early on this thread that both DH and I fully support reforming the consultants' contract which is next. Unlike some of the JD's we can resist naked self-interest in the interests of the greater affordable good. His remuneration relative to his ooh commitments is insanely good (his words) and his PP income also generous. (Admittedly, part of the reason he chose the specialism). Of course people like us should take a hit.

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 26/04/2016 14:46

Urban when it comes to healthcare, I don't pick up the daily fail or any other bias newspaper/ rag to obtain my facts the way you do, I'm frontline staff I live it every day (on a seven day rotation funnily enough!)

urbanfox1337 · 26/04/2016 14:46

No doctor should be rostered to work consecutive weekends without written agreement - sounds awful!

WellErrr · 26/04/2016 14:46

Feedmyface there are 3 goady fuckers on this thread - I suggest you leave them to it as most others have; they don't want to listen to facts, they just want to moan about how greedy and callous the JDs are for not working more hours for less pay.

sallysparrow157 · 26/04/2016 14:49

Urbanfox - I was a junior doctor for 11 years. I'm currently doing an extra year working on a junior doctor rota but with additional responsibilities (including sometimes acting up as a consultant for no extra pay). I'm applying for a consultant job now. Starting salary is £75k. That is full time. Including being resident or no more than 15 minutes away from work during my 24 hour clinical shifts. There is no scope for private work in my job.

It's a good salary and I absolutely love my job, I wouldn't want to do anything else. I do resent being called a fat cat part timer though.

I'm leaving this conversation now though. I'm off to work on my job application. I'll be sure to write that the reason I want this job is because of all the cash I will be rolling in whilst I only work half the time I'm paid to...

Runningwithacheesegrater · 26/04/2016 14:52

YoungGirl then don't make the mistake in assuming everyone is in the same position as you. Your DH draws an income from PP. Most of us don't and never will. We can't afford increased weekend/evening/night working at lower pay - we just financially cannot make the incoming match the outgoing.

Lanchester · 26/04/2016 14:53

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes
"... are you saying I'm fat?
Why are you getting personal?
Because that is rather rude if you are."
Obviously I'm not saying you are fat, only that you seem greedy / grabby for scarce resources, and your username makes it sound like you metaphorically have a sense of ENTITLEMENT to luxury.
At the taxpayers expense of course.
