Continuing the thread, and in reply to the two last posts of thread 2

Today 08:15 OhYouBadBadKitten

I don't think it is about Trump taking risks, its more that he is a narcisstic sociopath. He feels untouchable in what he says and has no regard for the consequences.

Today 06:53 fourmummy

To be fair, voters know that all political rhetoric mostly comes to nothing (rhetoric = argumentation and persuasion, elevated to an art from in Ancient Greece). Why do you imagine Labour want to introduce votes for 16 year olds? They know that people don't become "more conservative" as they get older-they become wiser to the political process and its lies rhetoric. So what's different with Trump? Why hasn't his unbelievably unlikeable public and private persona sunk him?

Answer=risk

He is not a ready-rolled, ready-prepped and ready-to-go politician (think Blair's son parachuted into a constituency; MIliband brothers, Clintons). These are not risking much because they were cast in the role when they were made. We know that this is the case with, certainly, Clinton (numerous interviews with aides attest to this; ditto for the others). Voters are doing a risk assessment of his risks and have decided that he is worth something. It's not as simple as suggesting that if someone votes for him then they must be racist or sexist, as I've seen journos assert. Voters are effectively doing a risk assessment and deciding that given the enormous costs both to him (energy, health, time away from family, reputation, financial, career, historical implications, ) and to his voters (risk of being viewed as sexist, racist, intolerant, asshole), the benefits must outweigh these costs. Very unwise to dismiss ordinary voters as simplistically sexist and racists, as many, many journalists have (shortsightedly) done. Even non-experts are very good at performing cost/benefit analyses

As I said I don't see anything of what he says as taking a risk. Because he is saying what many people want to hear.
As for personal cost, he is clearly someone who enjoys the power, the limelight, the adoration. All that is missing for him is the ultimate power, particularly as he sees other true billionaires taking central stage.
But he doesn't have the heart to be Gates.
So, he's going for the highest office, and on the back of American voters most primal fears.

But...
He's not averse to risk. He's built his empire on it. He's had four bankruptcies. Anyone should be worried about the way he manages risk.

I totally underestimated Trump before, but I don't think he'll get near making that final step.
Too many people, even Republicans, say they can't stand Trump and would never vote for a President Trump.
Even a sharp left turn won't make people forget what he's said since June.

Well, we'll all find out in November

'Too many people, even Republicans, say they can't stand Trump'

They will all have to come round and back Trump because nobody wants the Democrats in. As Hillary said, they will put miners out of work. They will also swing the Supreme Court in their favour which will change America forever. They will continue their globalist wars and free trade policies, they will expand political correctness and restrict free speech, they will allow illegal immigration and the loss of US jobs. It is far too imporatnt for the Never Trump crew to grandstand. They have no choice but to back Trump.

As Newt Gingrich said last night, Trump may be the greatest anti-left President in our lifetime - "he is against political correctness, he is against bureaucracy". Trump "may do more to dismanatle the left than anybody in our lifetimes".

Trump spells the end of the nonsense, the end of the "modernisers" worldwide, the phony conservatives and the whole lot of them.

claig · 04/05/2016 14:17

The enigma that is Trump and why none of the great and good, the high and mighty, the mendacious media servants and the bought and paid for politicians can understand why the people like him. It's over for the whole lot of them, we are going to win.

From the conservative National Review which a few months ago tried to stop the tide of the people's will with their Canute-like entire issue called "Against Trump".

"Trump: Something New under the Political Sun

The predictions about Trump have been so wrong because none of the normal rules apply to him.
...
A Trump orgasm is to have someone in a suit and makeup, or with a title before his name, pontificate that Trump should be and is through
...
Clearly, elite journalists, political advisers, media anchors, and pollsters, for all their analyses, have no idea where, why, and how Trump garners support. He follows no campaign rules. He has no consistent political ideology. He ignores decorum. Scandals do not tar him. The media treat him like a cobra rising from a basket — terrified that if at any moment they stop their music, the smiling serpent might strike and bite them in the nose.
...
A reality-TV star, Trump appeals to those who despise reality-TV celebs like the Kardashians. A billionaire, he is the hero of those who hate billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, or Warren Buffett. A vain narcissist, he earns the loyalty of those who are repelled by the vain narcissism of Barack Obama. A man who dyes and does his hair, tans his skin, and stretches his face, he appeals to those who have neither the money nor the desire to do the same.

A self-described Republican, he attacks Republicans more than Democrats. An elite insider, he blasts elite insiders. He is both to the right and to the left of Cruz, Kasich, and Rubio. Trump rails against dirty campaign fundraising — and he assures us that no one knows such corruption better than he himself, since as a donor he used to spread cash around precisely to influence. Why else should anyone give?
...
His supporters want a reckoning with a system that has not so much failed as infuriated them. What drives their loyalty to Trump — if not the person, at least the idea of Trump — is a sort of nihilism. As a close friend put it to me this week, “I don’t care whether Trump wins or not, I just want him to f— things up as long as he can.”
...
Trump is for a brief season our long-haired Samson, and the two pillars of the temple he is yanking down are the Republicans to his right and the Democrats to his left — and it will all land on top of us, the Philistines beneath."

As Trump says "we're gonna have so much fun".

Want2bSupermum · 04/05/2016 15:52

He doesn't have the nomination yet officially. I am hoping that this is going to result in a true political revolution where the US moves from a 2 party system to a 5 party system. The GOP have 3 parties and the Democrats have 2 parties. It would make much more sense for them to split up.

Nothing at this point would surprise me. Bernie has done extremely well. I do think Trump gave a fantastic speech on foreign policy. A second speech that lays out in simple terms exactly what changes he will make to trade agreements to bring jobs back is needed. He then needs to have big businesses back those plans. Only then can he be taken seriously. So far, if this was a vote for who is better with foreign policy, hands down its Trump compared to every other candidate out there. However, I want to hear far more detail from Trump on what his plans are for social security, Medicare, wage stagnation, crazy food and housing prices, property taxes and the insane cost of education. Finally I want to know his plan for paying down debt. For such a strong country we have an awful lot of debt. Defaulting isn't an option but one that I see Mr Trump being willing to go with. That scares the bejesus out of me.

Lweji · 04/05/2016 16:12

Situation changed from silly season joke to "how the hell did we get in this mess?

Well, that is the question Republicans in particular should be asking in the next 3 years.
Because even with Cruz, it would be a mess.

Want2bSupermum
Yes, I'd also like to see some details on his so called policies. I do wonder if we'll ever see any.

OP posts:
Want2bSupermum · 04/05/2016 17:01

I expect more detail in late September or early October. His foreign policy speech left Cruz in the dust. I expect he is holding back on economic policy as he will use that to attack Hillary. Right now the focus needs to be on Trump securing the nomination. He hasn't secured it yet. After that he needs to pick a VP. Every decision is going to be highly scrutinized because one single mistake will kill off any chance he thought he has.

claig · 04/05/2016 17:10

Kasich is suspending his campaign.

Out! Out! Out! Get him the hell outta here!

as Trump loves to say.

Trump is the nominee. Game on! Trump vs Hillary. No contest, watch the media and the world's entire Establishment rush to her aid, but Trump will win because the people will be with him.

claig · 04/05/2016 17:20

Trump was on NBC today and they asked him if he had to unite the party and he said he didn't need all of it, frankly some of them could go away and come back in 8 years' time after what they had said.

That is great news, it means that Trump is intending to do an 8 year stint rather than just the 4 years I thought he was aiming at.

"In fact, I read today where they're very concerned with me, they feel I'm very strong, very tough and they're very concerned."

"That's a psychological thing, which frankly is good," he said. "Let them be a little concerned."

All the lies and spin we have been fed will now be over. Trump will end the whole charade. It is a great time for the whole world and no one imagined that the puppets would ever be challenged and defeated.

Roger Stone, Trump's former adviser, has just assured us that Trump won't betray us, the people, he won't sell out, he is for real and he understands the game.

The game is on. Trump is for real!

'Do you really believe everything you're told?'

Certainly not. I believe nothing thatTony Blair tells us, but I believe that Trump is for real and understands the game. This is real and Trump will outplay the whole lot of them. He is the master of the game. They won't beat him.

"Winter is Trumping"

Are the undead Romney and assorted Bushes coming out for the Zombie Apocalypse Shock ?
No, I don't think the GOP would dare.

I think it is too late for them now.

AugustaFinkNottle · 04/05/2016 19:58

Second option, clearly.

claig You need to start now, buying the choicest stock of munchies - crisps, choc, cookies, nuts, fizz - for your marathon session on November election night Smile
(the rest of us may do a different kind of prepping)

claig · 04/05/2016 20:38

A home delivery in an articulated lorry chock full of goodies and alcohol will be delivered on the precise evening in November, and there will be adequate rations to last for the celebrations that will endure for an entire week. We are going to win, the puppets worldwide are in panic.

Lweji · 04/05/2016 20:54

BigChocFrenzy
I don't know. Considering the Trump apocalypse, that selection seems great.

We should start a prepers' thread for the Trump apocalypse.
