From now on the race becomes winner take all. If Trump wins Florida on March 15, it is probably all over.

I've actually stopped worrying about Trump since I've remembered that if a President does not have control of Congress, he can't actually do very much of anything.

claig · 02/03/2016 14:11

As Rochelle Hardaway, one of the legendary Stump for Trump sisters, so rightly said

"this election is going to be decided by We the People, not the media and not the Establishment"

Blair doesn't "understand" what is going on. It's called democracy.

Former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, said
"this is a popular revolution"

wiltingfast - except ( please someone tell me I am wrong about this) except have get to make the decision about a nuclear attack.
If Trump gets to the ability to launch nuclear attacks (and therefore the ability to threaten to launch nuclear attacks, then I think there is a problem for world stability.

claig · 02/03/2016 18:53

Mitt Romney has said he will make a speech on the election tomorrow. Speculation that he may enter the race. That would be the last throw of the dice for the Establishment to save themselves.

"One day after Donald Trump's racked up a slew of Super Tuesday victories, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced a Thursday event to talk about 2016.

The announcement immediately kicked off speculation that Romney plans to jump into the Republican 2016 race, as Trump's path to the party nomination becomes more and more clear."

talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/mitt-romney-speech-2016-gop-race

Blair is anxious about what is happening, Vicente Fox is dropping F-bombs on TV, billionaires are saying "stop Trump", the Economist says "time to fire Trump", the Pope has his say, Rubio imitates insult comedian Don Rickles in having a pop at Trump as the Establishment pulls out all the stops they have got to prevent Trump tearing up what they have worked towards for decades.

Watching about 15mins of CNN yesterday was horrible. The reporting was so very biased against Sanders and Trump. With Sanders vs Trump my vote would go to Sanders without a second thought. If it is Clinton vs Trump my vote would go to Trump. Clinton is much more of a liability compared to Trump because Clinton knows how to get around the checks and balances. Trump doesn't have the experience.

The Republicans are at a crossroads because Ted Cruz is not eligible for President based on him being born in Canada. Rubio isn't getting much of any traction. I guess Bloomberg declined to run against Trump on a Republican ticket. What is enabling Trump to win so many states is the fact that it should now only be between Trump and Cruz however none of the others have dropped out yet.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 02/03/2016 19:24

Ted Cruze isn't eligible? Why is he running?

claig · 02/03/2016 19:30

'Ted Cruz isn't eligible? Why is he running?'

It has never been judged on in the Supreme Court. trump keeps threatening to sue but that is just a tactic to cast doubt. It all hines on what "native born citizen of the United States means". Lawyers differ depending on whether to interpret the Constitution in originalist terms. Judge Napolitano on Fox says there is no case and Cruz is eligible, but Trumps cites America's possibly top constitutional lawyer, who actually taught Trump at Harvard Law School, who says Cruz is not eligible under an originalist interpretation.

I don't think it is going to be tested (I think a lawsuit from someone challenging it has just been thrown out) because I don't think there is really any chance that Cruz is likely to be President. If he really was, then someone(as Trump, says, probably the Democrats) would probably challenge it.

OP posts:
claig · 02/03/2016 19:33

'who actually taught Trump at Harvard Law School'

Sorry, who actually taught Cruz at Harvard Law School. Trump is probably cleverer than Cruz but Trump went to Wharton Business School, and as he himself points out "was a top student".

claig I always enjoy your posts. You're an incredibly well informed person.
In complete agreement with VocationalGoat

I admire your resiliance and courage and the fact that you always answer questions, criticisms and even personal insults with measured replies.

Keep up the good work Grin

Thanks a lot, MagzFarquarson Smile

MN is a great discussion forum. We all disagree on things but it is best not to get personal about it.

Ben Carson has said he will not attend the debate tomorrow. He will make a speech tommorrow. Looks like he may pull out.

I liked him a lot, he was a guy with real integrity, a doctor, not one of the "political class". If he retires, it is a great shame but I hope he gets a good job in government to help the American people.

Yes, I agree - we should all be free to voice our opinions.

I got told that I 'really don't know anything about it, do you? (paraphrasing because cba searching back through past posts) - when I made a comment about the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth group on a thread about WTC7.

claig · 02/03/2016 20:09

'I got told that I 'really don't know anything about it'

Yes, I remember that. This is from people who usually haven't got a clue what really goes on. If Trump gets in, I think he will open up all sorts of files and reports on lot amd lots of issues and the people will discover a lot of lies and the liars who told them, and some of them will be going to jail.

Cutting and pasting quotes from all over the internet that support your views doesn't really amount to being well-informed.

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 02/03/2016 20:13

Yes claig engages and I have read some interesting threads and picked up info and linked commentary I wouldn't have otherwise seen.

Trump's obnoxious comments have usually made me cringe but I have to say his "I love the badly-educated!" had me roaring; I would identify myself as badly/ self- educated!

claig · 02/03/2016 20:15

I don't claim to be well-informed, I just follow the US elections and the Trump phenomenon with interest due to the enormity of what it will mean for all of us if he wins. I cut and paste the articles to inform readers and lurkers who are interested in the biggest shakeup in US politics possibly ever due to what it will mean for the ruling class and globalism if Trump wins.

Carson is astonishingly stupid for someone who is supposed to be a brain surgeon. He's irrelevant now anyway.

Clinton will be the democratic nominee - that's near to 100% certain now. Bernie has done well - far better than I think anyone could realistically have hoped - but his support base is too narrow. Black voters aren't voting for him.

However I don't think the Republican nomination is as sewn up for Trump as the media would have it - he's the favourite for sure but I don't think it's certain that he will avoid a brokered convention (which he would probably lose). He is still only getting just over a third of the votes, even as the field thins.

I think there is now a fairly good chance that there will be a third candidate at the general election. Either Trump doesn't do enough to win the nomination outright and gets ousted in favour of Rubio at the Republican convention - in which case I think he will run as an independent candidate. Or he does well enough to take the nomination and there is a conservative breakaway which fields an independent right wing, small-government candidate.

(Claig keeps telling us that Trump is a true conservative, but he's actually seen by his own party as a big-government populist with uncomfortably liberal views on welfare and healthcare.)

MagzFarquarson · 02/03/2016 20:19

Agree, but what happens about documents which have been 'protected' from public scrutiny for 30 years or so for 'national security' or whatever excuse they use? Could Trump overturn previous rulings about this?

claig · 02/03/2016 20:26

'Claig keeps telling us that Trump is a true conservative, but he's actually seen by his own party as a big-government populist with uncomfortably liberal views on welfare and healthcare'

Yes because it depends what you mean by true conservative. On the Daily Politics we had a conservative MP who is a Sir and who backs the Democrats and thinks Trump is a catastrophe. I don't think he or most of the modernisers in our Conservative party are real conservatives because as Cameron said he is "the heir to Blair" and Cameron And Osborne refer to Blair as "the master".

If you watched Channel 4 News today, you would have seen the American author, Ann Coulter. I think Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and people like that are real conservatives. Ann Coulter said Trump is appealing to huge numbers of people and that there aare 10 million people with Trump and 500 against him (the Republican Establishment and the political consultants). Trump is a common sense conservative and is far more conservative than someone like Cameron.

OP posts:
claig · 02/03/2016 20:29

'Could Trump overturn previous rulings about this?'

Probably not, but I have listened to some of Trump's advisers and helpers and they have said that " a lot of people will be going to jail" and there will be indictments etc. Trump is going to clean house and expose the fraudsters and liars and is going to fix America very quickly. That is why the political class worldwide is petrified of Trump.

Trump's refusal to condemn the KKK in his interview with Jake Tapper has galvanized his Republican opposition, but it sadly may be too late.

To those of you on this thread who are supporting Trump: that's KKK, you know, the Ku Klux Klan. Sad

claig · 02/03/2016 20:36

Trump disavowed David Duke the day before at a press conference and he disavowed them on twitter. It didn't affect Trump's Super Tuesday results but it has galvanised the Republican Establishement like Speaker Paul Ryan and Leader of the House Mitch McConnell, who are looking for an excuse to hit Trump, but as Trump said in his press conference last night, he thinks he will get on very well with Paul Ryan, but if he doesn't then Paul Ryan is going to have a big problem.

I usually disagree with Claig but her threads are interesting and she's polite.

The Guardian has Trumpocalypse Noww*

"It’s no longer possible to say the Republican party is a conservative party.... It appears that a new, populist-nationalist wing has wrested control of the of the GOP away from its familiar constituency"

They seem to think he'll be nominated.
My understanding is that it would be politicially impossible to deny him if he wins 50% +1 of the delegates - kills all future Primaries & Caucuses.
However, anything less and he might lose a brokered convention - even if he say leads Rubio 45% to 35%.

Anyone know if delegates have to keep voting their designated candidate throughout the process, or if they can switch after the first vote ?

The Presidency is a far tougher hurdle than the Republican nomination, but if 50% of US really vote in President Trump then they deserve him - and the consequences to their economy & society.

SenecaFalls · 02/03/2016 20:47

They were weak disavowals.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2016 20:53

Most Republican politicians since Nixon have pandered to racism, just more subtlely, with code words like "welfare" and "entitlements" and locking up about 1 million African American men & boys.

For several decades, the GOP and their hate media have whipped up fear & prejudice, concentrated on the most easily fooled voters:
the racist, anti-science, uneducated, low-information, the god-botherers.

From Nixon's Southern Strategy through Reagan's Welfare Queens to Dubya's wars.
Atwater & Rove plotting.
The Tea Party rising.

The GOP succeeded in creating their desired idiocracy - but now their idiots are voting for Trump, instead of the GOP's chosen idiot.

Own. Arse. Shot. Bloodily.
