It's a pretty bold claim that I don't understand what's happening in Syria and that Trump does. :)

But about 2002, it shows that at around that time it's not likely he was opposed to the war as it was an issue that was barely registering with him. How can he claim now that he was so dead against it?

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:15

And where are his 2003 statements about it, from a man who has such strong and public opinions?

claig · 27/02/2016 15:18

'It's a pretty bold claim that I don't understand what's happening in Syria and that Trump does.'

Unless you know the important people that Trump knows and the sources of information that he has, then you won't know what he knows. If you read the Daily Telegraph then that won't tell you what is really going on.

'How can he claim now that he was so dead against it?'

Because he is on record as saying he was against it in 2003 and thereafter while it was going on and while the media was cheerleading Blair and the gang. He went against the flow while the Establishment, Bush, Balir and the gang were all for it.

I am in the US. People in the US really feel they have no influence on federal government and are very scared about the future - whatever their political leanings. Trump and Sanders are appealing because they do not seem as highly "over managed" like Clinton and Rubio. Trump is obnoxious but he is an entertainer not a classic politician and is familiar with the TV medium. He understands the value of car-crash TV. He also has high name recognition so doesn't have to explain to voters who he is.

A recent major study has shown that less educated white men have a lower life expectancy than almost any other group. Their are dying from the result of self destructive behaviour: drinking, smoking, drug taking. They have poor health and high rates of depression. This is Trump's key demographic but what is interesting is his appeal across all groups and genders.

My MIL surprised me at the weekend by telling me that she likes Sanders as she usually votes according to her pro-life anti-abortion beliefs. So it seems this election is breaking lots of rules and assumptions about why people vote and who they will vote for.

'And where are his 2003 statements about it, from a man who has such strong and public opinions?'

I don't know because I didn't have time to keep up googling it, but I heard on TV that Joe Scarborough of MSNBC unearthed a 2003 interview where Trump was against it and that caught the Establishment out as they were clapping their hands that they had got Trump. Also I think he wrote in a book in 2003 that he was against it after the war started.

It can all probably all be found on google. I haven't looked it all up because I believe Trump and not the Establishment.

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:21

Which important people? The Kardashians?

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:23

Also Trump ran before as a Reform party candidate so he actually does have experience running a campaign and getting publicity. He is very good at sucking all the oxygen out a discussion and somehow grabbing all the attention. So he keeps the focus on himself.

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:25

I can understand how many people are angry in the US, but the economic crisis in the last few years has made it more obvious how people are so unprotected by a capitalist health system based on insurance and very limited social security.

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:29

I think it's much bigger than that. Well paid jobs are scarce, housing in most coastal cities on the East and Western seaboards has become very expensive. People are struggling financially and don't see a future for their children.

claig · 27/02/2016 15:29

'Which important people? The Kardashians?'

No. Trump couldn't be taking on the entire Establishment and saying he will open up the redacted 28 pages of the 911 report and say that he will prosecute Hillary Clinton if he becomes President and Kirsten Powers would not say that Hillary won't be able to handle what Trump does to her in a one-on-one live debate if he wasn't supported and given information by some very serious people.

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:30

Oh, is this the one?
www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-defends-2003-interview-calling-iraq-invasion-a-success/

"It looks like a tremendous success from a military standpoint, and I think this is really nothing compared to what you're gonna see after the war is over."

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:31

Trump is actually to the left of Clinton on certain economic issues. He is talking about repealing treaties and bringing manufacturing back to the USA.

claig · 27/02/2016 15:32

'People are struggling financially and don't see a future for their children.'

Yes, the polls today show that the economy is now the number one issue again. Bernie says he will tax the rich and Wall Street to tackle it and Trump says he will slash taxes, make business boom and bring jobs back and impose trade sanctions if necessary and then there is the Establishment doing the same old, same old.

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:32

The problem is that countries are not run like companies.
Not sure he understands the differences well enough.

If he does become president, we can only hope that he does choose his advisors wisely. not Sarah Palin

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:35

You cannot get into Congress either house or senate without being loaded - either personally filthy rich or from supporters. The US is already run for and by business interests.

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:40

Clearly for many of his supporters they are giving the finger to "politics and usual" and it is a protest vote. His actual policies are somewhat of a mystery other than cutting taxes on the rich (again).

claig · 27/02/2016 15:43

'If he does become president, we can only hope that he does choose his advisors wisely.'

The US has some of the smartest people on the planet. Chris Christie has already endorsed him. Trump will have a patritic team of top experts in all spheres and he will end globalism and the globalists' hold on policy. The US will boom when he slashes coproration tax to 15% and undercuts China.

The Economist and Davos won't like it, but the American people will love it because America is going to be number one again and Vincente Fox, former President of Mexico is going to have to stop using four letter words. As Trump said

"People are used to talking about the United States that way. No more, folks."

claig · 27/02/2016 15:49

'The US is already run for and by business interests.'

That is why Trump is such a threat to the whole system. He is completely self-funding, no lobbyist owns him, he doesn't need their money unlike Rubio and Clinton etc

He says that lots of policies are carried out for the interests of the donors (even foreign donors and foreign banks and foreign governments) and lobbyists even though they are not in the interest of the people and the country.

"Not gonna happen anymore".

FrancisdeSales · 27/02/2016 15:51

Claig I think your dream that Trump can turn the US around in 4 years is just that, a dream. If Trump cuts more taxes how are we to pay our massive public debts, Medicaid and Medicare? The interest alone plus Medicaid and Medicare are already well above 60% of GDP.

When I was at Uni in 1994 we were told if the US didn't get a grip on its debt asap it would go into massive decline. There is no secret to the current problems, they have been brewing since the early 80s

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:51

So no comment on that 2003 interview?

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:53

And the main problem remains that the POTUS can directly to very little internally. It all goes down to the Congress.

claig · 27/02/2016 15:53

Vincente Fox and the entire world's globalist elite are rattled and frightened by Trump. They are trying to scare and threaten him, but they are going to learn a huge lesson - America is back

"not gonna happen anymore"

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:54

2003 interview?

claig · 27/02/2016 15:56

'So no comment on that 2003 interview?'

He said it was good for financial markets and Wall Street which is true and he said the war woud continue for Wall Street's benefit and he said it was very well done in how quickly the initial victory was achieved and it was good and we know that lots of Saddam's generals were paid off to walk away from their bases etc. It was good in that it was a quick initial victory. He didn't say he agreed with the war.

Lweji · 27/02/2016 15:59

But he had a good opportunity there to say he didn't agree with it.
He predicts it will be good for Wall Street not that it will become a dark episode in history.
Where's the strong opposition?
