I have zero understanding of American politics and wondered could some one give me an idiots explanation pls. Could trump really win???

Trump is anti-abortion now. And he had his lawyers send Cruz a cease and desist letter over political ads that demonstrated Trump's previous pro-choice positions.

Mistigri · 21/02/2016 15:10

It wouldn't surprise me if Trump were still reasonably pro-choice. His anti-abortion position is a position of convenience, it is basically the price of flying the republican flag in order to seek office. It would not be possible to run as a republican and be openly pro-choice.

SenecaFalls · 21/02/2016 15:13

But it's immaterial what he believes privately. His public position is anti-choice now and that is what will guide his policies if he becomes president.

claig · 21/02/2016 15:36

'His public position is anti-choice now and that is what will guide his policies if he becomes president.'

Not necessarily, Seneca. Trump can say anything he likes and then say the complete opposite. Trumpites don't care because they love the fact that he is not politically correct on the major issues. I think he will fnd some kind of fudge and everything will forget about it as they concentrate on the economy, beating Isis and the Wall.

GruntledOne · 21/02/2016 15:39

So you've said. Several times. Do you think maybe you've made the point sufficiently and could move on to something original?

claig · 21/02/2016 15:44

I think the point bears repeating. The rules of politics don't apply to Trump. He is teflon. As the religious pastor said about Trump "evangelicals are not voting for Trump because he is biblically correct, but because he is politically incorrect".

Trump beat Cruz in the evangelical contingent in South Carolina, the faith aspects are taking a back seat to Trump's strong points on trade, anti-establishment views, security, anti political correctness and security.

He is rewriting the rules of what the Republican Party really is and what conservatism/populism is. It is not what the academics and party wonks thought it was.

claig · 21/02/2016 15:47

Trump destroyed Bush and Bushism and Cheney and the whole gang in South Carolina which was known as "Bush country". The Pope rolled back and said it was not a personal attack pn Trump and he was basing what he said on what he had been told. Nothing the Establishment and its wonks can do will stop Trump.

I don't think the abortion position will change here in the U.S. Also with planned parenthood, I don't think funding will ever be stopped. It will just go into another provider, one most probably set up by the planned parenthood management team. The abortion services are heavily funded privately as it stands. DH and I provide funding for mothers to help them decide on what is right for them. Plenty more people provide help through their time and/ or money to provide the option of abortion. One aspect of socialized medicine that people fear is the rationing or removal of birth control options and abortion services.

claig · 21/02/2016 15:52

' I don't think funding will ever be stopped. It will just go into another provider, one most probably set up by the planned parenthood management team.'

Good point. That would make sense to split the functions so that funding could be guaranteed to be separate.

claig · 21/02/2016 15:57

Trump said he thinks he can win New York State and that if he wins that, then the race is over. He thinks he has strong support in upstate New York.

SenecaFalls · 21/02/2016 16:26

The abortion situation in the US just keeps getting worse. There are many states in the US where it is very difficult for women to access abortion services at all. And it can certainly change ever further if more hard right justices are confirmed on the Supreme Court.

Want2bSupermum · 21/02/2016 16:28

I don't doubt Trump can win NYS. As soon as you go north of Westchester it is much more conservative and Trump is talking about issues that are on their radar. When you get towards Syracuse and Buffalo there is quite a bit of poverty too.

SenecaFalls · 21/02/2016 16:34

DH is from upstate NY. I have greater faith in those folks. Racism and sexism don't have quite the same appeal as they evidently do in other parts of the country.

I could see that happen.

Trump at war with Fox and of course, Trump is winning. Even I watched CNN, a bit like the politically correct BBC, for the win analysis rather than Megyn Kelly and the politically correct Fox take on Trump.

"Fox News Is Plummeting As Trump Win Tears The Network Apart

Fox News is becoming a network at war with itself as Megyn Kelly and Bill O'Reilly are in a personal feud, and Donald Trump's victory is splitting the network into divided factions."

Trump retweeted a funny screen grab of a Fox show reaction to trump South Carolina win

"Trump's War on 'Political Correctness'

Donald Trump is succeeding, we're told, because he appeals to angry voters — but that's obvious; tell me more.
...
But there's more to it than mere anger. Chris Christie was angry, and he's gone.
...
Trump is way ahead — for many reasons, but the most important is obvious and virtually ignored.

Political correctness. Trump hasn't made it a campaign theme exactly, but he mentions it often with angry disgust. Reporters, pundits, and the other candidates treat it as a sideshow, a handy way for Trump (King Kong Jr.) to smack down the pitiful airplanes that attack him as he bestrides his mighty tower, roaring. But the analysts have it exactly backward. Political correctness is the biggest issue facing America today."

pjmedia.com/trending/2016/02/20/trumps-war-on-political-correctness/

Absolutely. Trump has singlehandedly torn up the elite's rules and chucked them in the bin and the people are laughing with Trump. His rallies are a rollicking laugh as he blasts every sacred cow the elite hold dear.

Can they stop him?

Can they stop a juggernaut? It's Trump 2016!

2016IsANewYearforMe · 22/02/2016 18:58

Yes, Donald Trump could win.

However, Hillary Clinton would be the book makers' clear favourite.

Thanks alot, BigChocFrenzy.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2016 22:59

You're welcome Smile
If you want to fume about a fix by a party leadership, then the fix is in for the Goldman Sachs stooge Hilary Clinton:
she already has most of the so-called "super-delegates" (governors, senators, congresspersons etc)
However, Bernie Sanders should keep running, because the Democrats need a clean fallback if she is too badly damaged by sleaze, or even gets indicted:
Clinton aides to be questioned under oath

Do the Republicans have super-delegates too, btw ?

claig · 23/02/2016 23:24

BigChocFrenzy, you are right about Hillary. Bernie is much better but the Democrats have got this superdelegate system although last time they initially backed Hillary and later switched to Obama. Hillary is expected to win it on the Democrat side, but in my opinion Trump will finish her off because he will reveal so many truths about her that she won't be able to survive that. Trump is not a normal politician he doesn't care what he says, he is going all out to take the whole lot down.

But yes the Republicans also have superdelegates but only 158. The Establishment desperately want to stop Trump because he has said he will look into whether Hillary should be prosecuted and because he has said he will open the redacted 28 pages of the 911 report and because he will bring jobs back to America if necessarily by protectionism and he will probably end the global warming thing, so they really want to stop him. Apparently, I heard today that he also wanst to audit the Fed, so they have to try and stop him.

Hillary only won Nevada by a small margin. The compter went down during the voting and the Establishment Senator Harry Reid of Nevada made a phone call to the union boss in teh casinos of the cullinary staff and he got the employees out to caucus and in some areas the doors were closed before peope could get in etc.

Trump is in Nevada tonight. He is ahead in the polls but he said it is Las Vegas so his people will be watching closely in caucus centres to make sure there is no funny Establishment business.

What is happening on both sides - Bernie and Trump - is truly revolutionary. The Establishment is up against the ropes and Trump is a greater threat to them than even left wing Bernie because Trump is going to expose what has been going on and he is going to end it and that will end it all over the world.
