Cologne Sexual Assaults IX and David Davies Web Chat

LumelaMme · 07/02/2016 13:07

On New Year's Eve women in Cologne were amongst those who were sexually assaulted and robbed in mass attacks.
This is a link to the last thread which has links to all the others.

Some of us have begun a petition asking the government to uphold women's rights and freedoms:

THE PETITION _ Please sign and share
The petition

We also hope that tomorrow, Monday 8th February, David TC Davies MP will be on MN for a web chat between 1pm and 2pm - it should be a sticky on either Chat or In The News. David was one of the few MPs who has shown any interest in this whole issue and who has responded sympathetically to those of us concerned about women's rights in a changing world.

PS Also meant to say, Mistress, thank you as always for your contributions. You know what you are talking about and for those of us who are trying to learn and explore, it's great to have you around.

Invaluable perspective and incredible writer.

Who knows who or what Mistress does, but I would love her views to be out there in the main stream.

Hindus do not require partner to convert to Hinduism. My next door neighbour is married to an English woman and she never converted. They have been married for 48 yrs. The only thing I would say is - if marrying 'out' a Hindu will be careful to choose someone of a similar education and potential status.

Yes indeed Smile In particular I've always appreciated Mistress's well researched and properly supported posts, usually with interesting links which I've learned a great deal from

It's often been sad to see the abuse she attracts on MN, but then that's the trouble with mentioning facts, isn't it - they can be so darned inconvenient

ItsJustaUsername it is sad that Cameron blocked legislation on sex education in schools. There is a petition with deadline 13 April with 25,169 signiatures titled 'Introduce LGBT sex education as a compulsory part of the school curriculum'. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/110042?reveal_response=yes#response-threshold To this gov responded 'Sex and relationship education should be relevant and sensitive to all young people, whatever their sexuality. The government is also committed to tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and 'When teaching sex and relationship education, it is a requirement for schools to have regard to the Secretary of State’s Sex and Relationship Education Guidance (2000). The guidance is available at this link: www.gov.uk/government/publications/sex-and-relationship-education

Thanks Marsicall I'll have a look at that.

And this is the link to the article with the shocking stats www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/feb/11/30-of-female-victims-under-16

I think a petition asking the government to tackle rape culture in the UK is a fantastic idea. We need harsher sentences/deterrents, and we need young girls and boys to be educated about sexual abuse/what constitutes rape etc as many genuinely don't know. We need the government and society to understand the consequences for the victims of these crimes and we need to end the belief, particularly amongst victims, that there is something shameful about being a victim of sexual assault (this is believed to be one of the main reasons so few report).
I suspect the government are happy so few report as they would no doubt need to build many more prisons if ALL rape victims came forward.

We've been talking about Germany, Sweden and other European countries but it seems to me the UK is just as dangerous for women and children but the serious lack of reporting outwardly suggests it's not that bad.

It also appears to me our media are no better than the German media and are terrified of reporting any sex crime where the perpetrators are of an ethnic minority. Still no descriptions released by the media of the men who gang raped the poor woman in Colne.

Ultimately I think a campaign/petition asking the government to deal with rape culture in general would be more successful than one which highlights the problem in relation to immigrants as no one other than the far right even wants to talk about this never mind address it.

Dr Al-Rimawi says that govt should stop pussyfooting around this issue of the niqab. To accept the veil is like accepting extremism because the niqab is not mandated in Islam.

Wow. A journalist who says out loud what we've been discussing here.

This article = required reading.

I will email Sarah Vine. Or send Flowers

sportinguista · 13/02/2016 05:32

Exactly the crux of the issue. It isn't about depriving refugees of sanctuary but just not at the same time depriving women/girls/ gay people of theirs. Shutting down the debate risks a far more horrible consequence and the far right gaining ground. It seems we have taken our eye off the ball in recent years, now it has come to the point where it is a crisis.

The article was well balanced acknowledging that not all Muslims subscribe to the more extreme elements either. All our freedoms are important.

Haven't caught up with threads, but wondered whether anyone else saw what the police commissioner said about historic sexual crime?

I found this guest post, and I am surprised there isn't more comments.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/guest_posts/2569653-Guest-post-Survivors-of-sexual-abuse-must-know-theyll-be-believed

Given the fact that we want sexual assault, dealt with as harshly as possible, this sort of thing undermines it.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 13/02/2016 07:40

I have long suspected Sarah vine is a mner - of course because of who her husband is it must be hard reading sometimes. Sad

Thank you January Here is a link to an interesting Article 20 October 2012 published in the Economist on Economic contribution of women www.economist.com/news/economic-and-financial-indicators/21564857. A table in it shows a Forecast increase in GDP by 2020 if female employment rates match male rates. The article says the following: If female employment rates matched those of men, GDP would increase by 5% in America and 9% in Japan by 2020. The impact would be even larger for developing countries, home to most of the world’s women who lack adequate education and support (social and political). Increasing female employment would increase GDP significantly in countries like India and Egypt, where female labour-participation rates are below 30%. These countries rank low in Booz’s index of women’s economic empowerment.

I said earlier in the week I'd ask a Turkish friend his knowledge about any increased numbers in rapes - we've been friends nearly 25 years but he's always been very secular, this is what he had to say:

"Its so pitty to say this but it [rape] was already high in Turkey. These refugees didn't add anything.
I can tell you one thing about
Middle eastern people;
they are thinking that European women are so easy and they dont have any good name concern, sex is so natural for them and believe it or not in their eyes most of them just like prostitute. So sorry to say all these things but this is what they are thinking. Because of all these, they have no hesitate to attack them. They are already believing that its no problem. And you can add their hunger feeling for the women. This is their mentality."

BrittEkland · 13/02/2016 20:40

In the ME there are prostitutes that men go to. They would not dream of running out without paying because the women are protected either by a pimp or a Madam. Why don't the migrants seek the services of a similar woman in any city in Europe, I wonder.

I think it is obvious to the recently-arrived to any part of Europe that women are not giving any of them the 'green light', they are not standing around looking seductive, and they protest when molested, and scream & weep when they are raped. Which part is not understandable. What explanation, I wonder, do they give for the women in niqabs pursued and brought down in Egypt in mass taharrush chases?

Just read the Sarah Vine article. I think I will go along with Grace's theory!

I take heart from the fact that six weeks post-Cologne, the issue has not sunk without trace.

The police said there's no evidence the sexual assaults in Cologne were organised. Also 73 suspects have been identified. Only 12 for sexual assaults.

Prosecutor: Most Cologne New Year's suspects are refugees
BERLIN (AP) — Most of the suspects identified in connection with a series of robberies and sexual assaults in Cologne during New Year's celebrations are refugees, prosecutors said Monday.

Cologne prosecutor Ulrich Bremer said 73 suspects have been identified so far — most of them from North Africa. A total of 1,075 criminal complaints have been filed, including 467 alleging crimes of a sexual nature ranging from insults to rape.

The suspects included 30 Moroccan nationals, 27 Algerians, four Iraqis, three Germans, three Syrians, three Tunisians, and one each from Libya, Iran and Montenegro, Bremer said.

"They have various legal statuses, including illegal entry, asylum-seekers and asylum applicants," he said of the foreign suspects. "That covers the overwhelming majority of suspects."

Twelve of the 73 suspects are linked to sexual crimes, though only one of those — a Moroccan asylum-seeker who entered Germany in November — is in custody, he said.

LumelaMme · 16/02/2016 07:08

I'm not sure if the attacks not being organised makes the whole episode more or less worrying. The idea that a crowd of men could spontaneously decide that assaulting women was a fun thing to do is quite terrifying.

I also posted on the other thread this:This charity contains useful links for the Petition gendertrust.org.uk/directory/support-organisations also it has a list of supporting organisations. translondon.org.uk/ TransLondon is a discussion/support group for all members of the ‘trans’ community, whatever their gender identity (or identities) and whatever stage in their ‘transition’ they have reached (if at all). However, all members must themselves be trans-identified or ‘questioning’.

Woodhill · 16/02/2016 10:50

Britt perhaps they think they can get away with attacking the women in Cologne and they would not have to pay a prositute for sex. It is likely they may be given accommodation and food etc and perhaps have no money itms.
