Petition

Women in the UK must be free to work, travel and live free of sexual violence

Recently, women across the EU were subjected to mass sexual assaults of a type previously unknown in Europe. We demand that Government brings forward proposals for extra measures to uphold UK women's rights, safety & freedom, and to expand police understanding-recognition-response to such behaviour.

Django Reinhardt New York City Festival - Dark Eyes

I guess it was written for a woman with dark eyes.
AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 08/03/2016 21:26

spinging I can't help but agree, I think your right.

I was with DD this weekend at the Museum of London, I took her to see the Suffragette case, the shoe of Pankhurst, the banners etc. She is only little but basically explained as I have before what the suffragette are and why they are important and if it wasnt for those women Mummy couldn't vote etc.

She looked at me and said " did you know mummy, men used to be able to whip their wives" she said it with out rage ( of a sort).

West14 · 08/03/2016 21:32

Thanks JoMacki, for posting the reply from Ms Morvai. She is an excellent woman, I have seen her on youtube.

West14 · 08/03/2016 21:41

I agree with both Wordsaremything and Standingstill. The brainwashing - for that is what it is - has been working away in schools and other places of learning for a long time. I made sure that my children knew alternatives to what they were being taught and I taught them how to think by themselves and analyse.

Indigofactory · 08/03/2016 22:09

I'm starting to feel that a new apolitical movement is needed by women, for women to promote and protect womens' rights. This would be nothing to do with feminism - they can carry on down their own route. I just have this horrible feeling that unless we ordinary women organise ourselves and say 'This is the Line beyond which we will not retreat', all the freedoms we have fought for are going to be slowly and silently taken from us and denied to our future generations. I see this movement as monitoring the press and daily life for examples of loss of female liberty and collectively publicising and challenging them via all routes available, such as MP, Councillors, Director Public Prosecutions, Press, organisation/companies etc. Any thoughts?

I think this is a wonderful idea.

I mind very much having my thoughts and fears parcelled up and handed back to me labelled with erroneous cliches like 'racist' and 'right-wing.'

It's facile and insulting as it shows the parceller to be either uninterested in, or intellectually incapable of, nuanced debate.

I am also tired of being told that each new outrage is a one-off in a 50s don't worry your pretty little head type way.

Like most women, I'm not stupid and I want to see that we are all committed to protecting the rights of women including our daughters, mothers and each other.

If kids can't cope with Ramadan but adults can, then why not just excuse kid from Ramadan? Bit rubbish to make kids have a harder time than adults.

If the idea is that EVERYONE's performance inevitably deteriorates as a result of fasting, then how can we justify allowing fasting adults to drive cars, operate machinery and perform surgery?

Makes no sense.

MariscallRoad · 09/03/2016 00:57

JCQ nows changed and says there was misunderstanding and 'Summer exams will not be fitted around Ramadan, confirm boards' www.theguardian.com/education/2016/jan/07/summer-exams-wont-be-fitted-around-ramadan-confirm-boards

TheNewStatesman · 09/03/2016 04:35

Good. I don't think kids should be fasting anyway.

AgainstTheGlock · 09/03/2016 09:22

I dunno, seems a pretty good indicator to me of the mentality of a religion/culture who would rather let their children fuck up their exams/future than let them have a sandwich.

A discussion has been going on about the Cologne attacks since 6 January at the expat site Toytown Germany - the OP is excellent and apart from some yahoos, it’s interesting and thoughtful - www.toytowngermany.com/forum/topic/355760-cologne-station-sexual-assaults-how-can-i-make-my-voice-heard/

More info - an official enquiry into the NYE attacks:

This disgusting incident has already been posted - a 12-year-old surrounded and groped - www.general-anzeiger-bonn.de/ga-english/Child-indecently-assaulted-at-swimming-pool-article3203695.html

The Iraqi who raped the 10-year-old boy at a pool in Vienna is to be jailed - don’t know if anyone has already said this.

sportinguista · 09/03/2016 09:55

It's only what he deserves and more. Hopefully he will be deported back to Iraq as it's clear he cannot live in Europe.

David Cameron to pay Turkey £500m protection money to stem flow of migrants into Europe www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/david-cameron-pay-turkey-500m-7513236

I fail to see the point in this given one of the conditions is allowing 75 million Turks visa free travel to EU countries.

Police in Cologne have released images of young migrant men suspected of groping and assaulting women during the city's New Year's Eve celebrations.

MariscallRoad · 09/03/2016 10:35

Quaintessential have you followed what was going on on 8 March in Brussels at the meeting of 28 with Turkey?

Quaintessential · 09/03/2016 10:47

Yes I have. Is it not correct that one of President Erdogans many demands is to bring forward visa free travel for Turkish citizens to June this year?

Thanks for the links mrsquagmire. Interesting to read debates around the Cologne attacks from those living there.

MariscallRoad · 09/03/2016 11:34

Quaintessential nothing yet is finalised. There will be more discussions in the next few days between Leaders and there will be a second meeting. Not all of the EU states agree to the draft proposals.

Quaintessential · 09/03/2016 11:36

Yes I'm aware of that i was simply stating the demands.

Twinsareplenty · 09/03/2016 13:21

Signed.

Very depressing Stacey Dooley programme on iPlayer at the moment about Turkey.

MariscallRoad · 09/03/2016 13:30

Quaintessential thanks it is good to bring attention to things that might affect us and I feel one might write to the MPs and raise issues with them especially 'where money is comming from'.
