Petition

Women in the UK must be free to work, travel and live free of sexual violence

Recently, women across the EU were subjected to mass sexual assaults of a type previously unknown in Europe. We demand that Government brings forward proposals for extra measures to uphold UK women's rights, safety & freedom, and to expand police understanding-recognition-response to such behaviour.

An appropriate thought for International Women's Day - here's a letter to those of us who expressed concern and set up the petition from Krisztina Morvai MEP, about her work on behalf of women's safety in Europe:

"Thank you very much for your letter of 6th February regarding my speech at the Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) Committee of the European Parliament on the subject of violent crimes committed by migrant men against women particularly in Germany, but also in Sweden and other countries on New Year's Eve 2015 (and also since then). I apologize for the delay in my answer, but I was waiting for a response to a letter I wrote on the issue to the German Ambassador (Permanent Representative) to the European Union. Unfortunately, no answer was received from him until now, so it is time to send my response to you.

Let me inform you about the work I have done since my speech at the FEMM (Women's) Committee in relation to the matter of violence against women in Europe by migrant men. Following the speech and the many responses I received to it, I wrote letters to the German Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the European Union as well as the Swedish Permanent Representative asking them to inform me about the results of the investigations regarding the crimes committed on New Year's Eve 2015 as well as on the status of violence against women committed by migrant men in their countries. I called their attention to the fact, that violence against women is considered to be a very serious issue by the European Union and Member States are expected to respond to such violence with due diligence and these crimes must be taken very seriously by their authorities. Moreover, it is expected that victims of such crimes are assisted and helped by state authorities. In addition, I wrote a letter to Ms. Iratxe Garcia Perez, the Chairperson of the FEMM (Women Right's and Gender Equality) Committee of the European Parliament asking her to initiate thorough investigation of the crimes committed on New Year's Eve 2015 and since then by migrant men against women across the European Union.

Let me inform you about the responses I received. Unfortunately the German Permanent Representative (Ambassador) Mr. Reinhard Silberberg (Permanent Representation of Germany, Rue Jacques de Lalaing 8-14 /Brussel Belgique, Tel: +32 27871000 Fax: +32 27872000, Email: [email protected] , Internet: www.eu-vertretung.de ) has not responded to my letter at all. I must say I found this very surprising, because as a Member of the European Parliament I am used to receiving answers to my official letters.

The Swedish Permanent Representative (Ambassador), Mr. Ahnlid Anders (Square de Meeûs 30/De Meeûssquare 30 ,1000 Bruxelles/Brussel Belgique, Tel: +32 22895611 Fax: +32 22895600 Email: [email protected], E-mail: [email protected]) did respond to my letter, very briefly. He argued that after as far as he was aware such crimes were not committed in Sweden but in Germany. He advised me to contact the Swedish Chief of police which I did, but unfortunately there has been no response since.

Ms. Iratxe Garcia Perez, the Chairperson of the FEMM (Women's) Committee responded to my letter. She agreed with me that violence against women these days is an extremely serious problem across Europe. She further argued that Member States are obliged to take such violence seriously and they must respond to it. On the other hand, she pointed out that the European Union (Parliament) cannot "interfere" because the investigation of and response to such violence against women is the responsibility of Member States. I'm slightly surprised by this response since the European Parliament and in particular the FEMM Committee is usually very active in taking up similar matters and there is a large number of European Union recommendations and other sources on the subject matter of violence against women which would make it possible for the Committee to check their enforcement by the Member States.

I believe that civil society should be even more active in Europe these days towards putting a pressure on governments to prevent violence against women and respond to such attacks efficiently. I also attach a couple of European Union and other international documents.

With warm regards,

Krisztina Morvai JD, LL.M, Ph.D, associate professor of law

Member of the European Parliament"

Quaintessential · 08/03/2016 13:32

He argued that after as far as he was aware such crimes were not committed in Sweden but in Germany.

Does he not read the news then? Or wiki? Apparently not.

From Wiki
The latest published report that indicates the association between immigrants and rape was published in 2005 and revealed that from 1997 to 2001 foreign born individuals were 5.5 times more likely to be charged of rape than individuals born in Sweden

And that was before immigration soared to today's levels.

Sweden has the second highest incident of rape in the entire world, and the worst response by the looks of it.

www.gatestoneinstitute.org/5195/sweden-rape

1 in 4 Swedish women WILL be raped.

At least you got a reply and some contacts

standingstill898 · 08/03/2016 15:06

AMouse totally agree with you on Blair (yuk me too!) and Conservatives now - thank GOD.

Just listened to Radio 4 news between around 1.15-1.45 - two totally crazy items posited as totally unproblematic and unchallenged.

  1. UN Human Rights Commissioner chiding EU for being uncomfortable with taking too many migrants for quote 'fear of damaging their culture' - this he called 'racist'.
  2. A woman whose job it is to train armies in how to deal with sex as a weapon of war. She had to TELL Iraqi soldiers that it was NOT OK to 'honour kill' a woman after she had been raped (the traditional response in that neck of the woods).

Seriously - and R4 simply lets these views be aired without any challenge. For instance, that there are 50 Muslim countries in the world - it is NOT just the EU which should be expected to shoulder the burden, ESPECIALLY when we are on heightened terror threat levels from people with the same religion as those coming in, and with the likelihood that ISIS is sending troops via the migrant route highly likely.

And on International Women's Day it is not commented on that countries like Iraq and Sudan reject or even kill women who were raped and reject the offspring of the rapes. Sorry - that is worth commenting on?? - it is inhumane, and these are the sorts of people whom we are expected to change our culture to accommodate...

Pangurban1 · 08/03/2016 15:48

I posted this in other thread, but probably better here. It appears trivial following standstill's post. But freedom is important for women and a feeling that the law will not go softer on anyone who discriminates or attacks us.

That Swedish guy will probably claim not to know anything about this either. That is because descriptions of perpetrators aren't given out by the police and it is not reported in many papers.

How dreadful on this day that police in Ostersund, Sweden have effectively said to women to follow a self-imposed curfew to avoid being attacked or raped in the spate that has being on there recently. All the while not giving out a proper description of the attackers. How generous of them to help protect the attackers like this.

They won't give out a description of the criminals to avoid discrimination. Not against the women who are raped, but the criminals who attacked or attempted to attack the women.

"The warning has been widely criticised, including by representatives of the local government, with many arguing that women should not have to 'adapt' to abusers.
'I am adverse to the solution being to tell women and children to sat at home, that can never be the solution for us,' local government commissioner AnnSofie Andersson told Sveriges Radio." From the Mail.

And from The Local, sweden

www.thelocal.se/20160308/backlash-begins-after-swedish-women-told-not-to-go-out-alone

However the force's recommendation that women should avoid being alone at night swiftly prompted criticism in Sweden, a nation that prides itself on promoting gender equality.

"The solution can never be to not go out because of such a warning. We have very many women who work in home and social care at night for example. What are they supposed to do?" the city's mayor Ann-Sofie Andersson told Swedish broadcaster SVT.

At least the commissioner is calling it out for the discriminatory bs against women that it is.

Carried by very few newspapers. Collusive suppression and minimising.

WeMustSurelyBeLearning · 08/03/2016 16:18

I'm angry all over again after reading these links. Especially the one just posted by Pang. WHY ARE PEOPLE ACCEPTING WOMEN BEING TOLD TO STAY INSIDE?

We are sleep walking back into the Middle Ages. All our hard win freedoms will be erased within a generation if this continues.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 08/03/2016 16:39

I agree there are a number of reasons of course why they are heading to europe, but more pressure must be brought to bear on rich arab nations to help.

WHY ARE PEOPLE ACCEPTING WOMEN BEING TOLD TO STAY INSIDE?

I agree.

But what else can they do?

There is no police infrastructura there to deal with the huge increase of population. There is no education of the laws, and practices of the host country. There is probably no fear of the police or courts ( until perhaps serving time by which time, someone has been harmed)...

What can they do? Much easier to get women to remove themselves. Angry

I also got a reply from Krisztina Morvai.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/03/2016 17:38

What Erdogan is doing is disturbing, the country's secular tradition is being dismantled bit by bit in the favour of tradtional Islam

Another reason, perhaps, to wonder what the consequences would be - especially for women - of admitting Turkey to the EU

Quaintessential · 08/03/2016 18:36

With a population of 75 million I don't even want to think about the consequences. Mass migration of Europeans maybe? Australia's pretty spacious right?

standingstill898 · 08/03/2016 18:38

pang it's so sad what's happening in Sweden - from such a civilised country to one headed back to the dark ages for women (and men? where are all the Swedish men whilst all this is happening?)

Here's another incident older I think but still, the picture of Sweden makes it so sad what is happening inside www.dcclothesline.com/2016/03/08/muslim-rape-gang-victim-they-shouted-swedish-whore-and-cut-my-breast-with-a-razor-blade/

It is clearly hate crime - but of course that's 'impossible' if it's directed towards white people Hmm

sportinguista · 08/03/2016 18:49

A little music to keep you all on track, the lyrics are posted on this one. You will all see why.

The jewel, the prize
Looking into your eyes
Cool pools drown your mind
What else will you find?

I hear a rumor
It was just a rumor
I heard a rumor
What have you done to her?

Myriad lights
They said, I'd be impressed
Arabian Knights
At your primitive best

A tourist oasis
Reflects in seedy sunshades
A monstrous oil tanker
It's wound bleeding in seas

I heard a rumor
What have you done to her?
I heard a rumor
What have you done to her?

Veiled behind screens
Kept as your baby machine
Whilst you conquer more orifices
Of boys, goats and things
Ripped out sheeps eyes
No forks or knives

Myriad lights
They said, "I'd be impressed"
Arabian Knights
At your primitive best

I heard a rumor
What have you done to her?
I heard a rumor
What have you done to her?
I heard a rumor

Apologies if this has already been posted. I can't believe that women are having to change their behaviour now - the authorities are powerless to defend us. What has Merkel done......

pepper it is a massive disgrace but it won't be contained to Sweden or Germany for long.

On another note, another example of the wonders of multicult.

MariscallRoad · 08/03/2016 21:03

For international womens day:

Lysistrata - by Aristophanes. Greek Plays

Women go on sex strike to stop war

SpringingIntoAction · 08/03/2016 21:15

I'm starting to feel that a new apolitical movement is needed by women, for women to promote and protect womens' rights.

This would be nothing to do with feminism - they can carry on down their own route.

I just have this horrible feeling that unless we ordinary women organise ourselves and say 'This is the Line beyond which we will not retreat', all the freedoms we have fought for are going to be slowly and silently taken from us and denied to our future generations.

I see this movement as monitoring the press and daily life for examples of loss of female liberty and collectively publicising and challenging them via all routes available, such as MP, Councillors, Director Public Prosecutions, Press, organisation/companies etc

Any thoughts?
