Would you vote to stay or leave the EU?

Quick poll.

Am I being naive in thinking that the in campaign bangs on about economy, jobs, money.....but never quality of life? I do worry about how my DC will find houses, get their kids into school, get doctors appointments? I just feel like life is becoming such a struggle, a fight over the scant services and amenities already. The preppers get a lot of stick, but if I'm honest, I'm already prepping to be able to house my grown kids and families. granny annex and service bell so my dil's can wait on me

The 'remain' campaign are basically selling more of the same, and we all know what that entails. The thing is that with any referendum the status quo is the default option. The 'leave' campaign really have to create a vision of a better future for the UK outside Europe. The onus is on them to show voters what that might be. And they're in such utter disarray currently, with no clear campaign, no clear campaign leader, no one movement even, that I fear they'll never have a chance.

DC is being very clever IMO. He's rushing through this referendum before 'leave' have a chance to create a viable alternative, meanwhile the concessions he's trying to get from the EU are a pathetic, watered-down version of what he promised, but you can bet he's going to talk up whatever he's able to beg from them and make it sound like a big victory, that Europe has backed down, that they're running scared of the UK leaving, that we've got what we wanted, when so far all I can see is he's going to be forced to accept whatever crumbs they're prepared to drop from the table - and that's the rotten deal the British people will be stuck if we stick with Europe (which so far is looking depressingly likely).

Palebluedotty · 02/02/2016 13:42

Agree Dagger quality of life is never discussed. Agree Rorty and I think I said something vaguely similar when I originally posted on this thread.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 02/02/2016 13:52

Leave.

RortyCrankle · 02/02/2016 14:57

Juneau why would Out need to create a viable alternative? Power would be returned to Westminster and new bills and laws introduced to benefit the UK.

I very much doubt whether any concessions DC may drag reluctantly from the EU will be sufficient to change people's minds. I hope he does it quickly so that we can have a referendum in May this year. It has dragged on for far too long although frankly I can only see Out votes increasing the longer it takes.

juneau · 02/02/2016 15:12

Because there are unanswered questions on the 'leave' side (I am pro-leave btw and agree with the points you made up-thread).

A few of them are:

  • would leaving damage the UK economy and, if so, how much?
  • what will happen to EU citizens resident in the UK?
  • what about UK citizens resident in other EU countries?

I think a lot of people want those answered before they decide.

RortyCrankle · 02/02/2016 18:53

Hmm I see what you're saying. I assume it's easy enough for a decision to be made ahead of the referendum re EU residents here and UK residents in EU countries. However, without a crystal ball how can anyone forecast what changes would occur to the economy?

So the Stays have it easy as we know what our economy looks like in the EU. The Outs can only surmise. Personally I don't think that will stop people voting Out (or at least hope not).

RortyCrankle · 04/02/2016 20:38

As a result of David Cameron's discussions with the EU in the last couple of days, I was wondering if what he thinks he can achieve is sufficient for people to change their vote? Personally I will still vote Leave.

ExitPursuedByABear · 04/02/2016 20:48

The too.

ExitPursuedByABear · 04/02/2016 20:50

Me

candykane25 · 04/02/2016 21:01

Stay

Pocketrocket31 · 04/02/2016 21:02

Leave

seasaltcaramel · 04/02/2016 23:24

Leave

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 06/02/2016 17:46

What I need to know is whether Dave negotiating for fundamental reforms or a hand full of "op outs" ...which can be given away later by the next Government.

He says that we are better off in "a reformed EU". I don't disagree with him, but it does rely on "reform", not opt outs.

BMW6 · 06/02/2016 18:19

Leave. The EU is undemocratic and not accountable.

stumblymonkey · 06/02/2016 18:21

I will do a lot more research on pros and cons before the referendum but today I would vote to stay.

TheAlchemist101 · 06/02/2016 20:55

How uncontrolled immigration have affected my life:
Can't get ds1 into local school due to influx of immigrant families in past few years
3 week wait for a routine GP appointment or 3 hour wait in walk in centre
No pay rise for last 4 years due to increase in immigrants in my line of work willing to work for less
Increase in immigrants living in Houses of multiple occupation in our area with increase rubbish, noise and loss of community
Increase in taxes and a reduction in services over past 5 years

Most immigrant families will pay minimum taxes but will receive tax credits, child benefit, housing benefit, school places and healthcare so will receive much more from the state then they will ever pay in taxes. I for one don't think we can continue to support more families like this from other countries

So I would vote to LEAVE

candykane25 · 06/02/2016 22:44

That is lack of investment in infrastructure.

TheAlchemist101 · 06/02/2016 23:05

We can never build enough infrastructure if they population continues to rise uncontrollably

candykane25 · 07/02/2016 19:00

It's not uncontrollably.
Yes we have lots of infrastructure still to build. Lots and lots.

var123 · 10/02/2016 15:37

I haven't read the thread, but has anyone asked what will happen to the EU if the UK leaves it? Will the UK leaving lead to the end of the EU?

I think the EU will be at least diminished in status as citizens of other countries ask why did the Uk leave if we are so good?

If it does start a chain of events that leads to the breakup of the EU, then will the UK be blamed for the collapse?

juneau · 10/02/2016 16:15

I don't think it's Britain's problem what happens to the EU. We are one of the wealthier countries in the EU and it will certainly have a lot less revenue pouring in if we leave, but whether it survives or not and whether Britain gets blamed for its failure shouldn't sway us in our decision making. I've always thought the EU was doomed to failure. The dream of a 'united states of Europe' was always flawed because we aren't 'united states', we're umpteen different countries with our own ideas, leaders, problems, cultures, languages, etc.

var123 · 10/02/2016 16:46

The united states of america was also originally lots of disparate states. It took a civil war to force some of the states into the single country we see today (not really anything to do with slavery - that's just how it was written up after the Yankees had won and a long time had passed).

I agree that without that sort coercion the EU is never going to succeed at being anything other than a trading block. I think it will fail whether the UK stays or leaves. However, what i am wondering is whether Britain being blamed for the failure of the EU (which will cause massive problems in many countries) will be our problem? Will we become the pariahs of Europe as South Africa became to the rest of Africa?

TheAlchemist101 · 10/02/2016 17:22

South Africa was the pariah because it imposed an immoral apartheid system which discriminated Non white people and not comparable with the U.K. Leaving the EU. I would vote to stay in the EU if I thought things couldn't get any worse and our public services could cope but I m not convinced.

The majority of the people coming from the UK will not be net tax contributors and will be taking out more in public services then they will pay in tax. I work Healthcare and we are getting lots of incidences of health tourism. In the past year in our hospital a 1/3 of all children presenting with a long term chronic health conditions which will need lifelong treatment are from Eastern Europe. The parents say they come to the UK because our healthcare is better and free. Much as I feel for these families I don't think this is sustainable for much longer

var123 · 10/02/2016 17:43

I know that S. Africa was a pariah for a different reason. What i was asking - not stating as a fact - was what will happen to Britain's influence in Europe if we are blamed for bringing down the EU?

I think the EU will fall anyway, but Brexit could speed it up.

I think it would be wrong to blame the EU collapsing on Brexit but I lived abroad and I was shocked by how willing people are willing to believe that bad things about the UK that just don't stand up to any kind of scrutiny.

Personally, I think the UK should exit anyway because economically and socially we will be better off. I was just wondering if this was a risk that is not being assessed.
