Mass sexual assaults in Cologne on New Years Eve

I've just read this and I'm shocked that such a thing could happen. A group of around 1,000 men gathered and assaulted at least 60 women and girls and also pickpocketed people. Apparently the news wasn't released until now out of fears it could stir up tension as the men appeared to be of Arab/North African appearance, possibly refugees.

To be realistic if your handbag with all credit cards and your passport is grabbed by a man in the street you are about to get into a huge financial trouble and loose a lot, so you would go to the police, give description of the person and you also expect the police to give you a report for your insurance.

In Austria:
"Many women and girls have also been attacked. Some told me they were attacked on the Staatsbrucke, some in the marketplace and others at the train station."

"They tried to beat them off, but they were overcome and one of them was grabbed by the head. He was cuddling her and licking her face."

"In another case a 28-year-old, also from Afghanistan, shortly after midnight had attacked a woman from Salzburg after grabbing her from her scooter."

"And in Switzerland, six women reported identical crimes in Zurich on New Year's Eve, while Finnish police intercepted information suggesting similar attacks were planned."

So if all of this is accurate (pinch of salt due to DF source) this was indeed a terrorist attack.

'Their culture is incompatible with ours'. Comments like that are not discussing aspects of a culture.

That's EXACTLY what they're discussing. Culture, not race.

I was making the point that because of the behaviour of a few we don't have to tar the majority with the same brush.

Oh yeah gee we hadn't thought about that Confused FFS we're not stupid you know! We get that.

If you want racism go and have a look on other forums.

What does Arabic or North African appearance mean then Cellardoor?

OK, I understand. I don't like the Guardian much so don't spend much time there. I wasn't sure if comments were only visible to people who are logged on. Doe they sometimes enable comments?

Pink Just that the Guardian, that beacon of liberal views, have been well behind on the reporting and have disabled comments on those reports it has published, presumably because the debate will be 'difficult'. Yes it is just too difficult for them it seems and I say that as a (very disappointed) lifelong Guardian reader.

Luna. Should we ignore it then and sacrifice our vaginas and breasts for the groping, for fear of making a 'generalisation'

Ego - forgot to mention upthread, but well done on trying to call the Guardian out on this one. (For those who don't remember Ego's post, she asked them in a comment on an article on women's rights why none of the articles on Cologne were open to comments - they deleted her just for asking the question.)

Pink - the Guardian's comments should be visible to you, you don't have to be logged on. I've had personal (and very painful) experience of being thrown under the bus by a Guardian journo for daring to raise women's rights (wasn't even particularly contentious, I would have thought, was an article on working women and work-life balance. They made me out to be a nutcase for pointing out that the phrase "having it all" is only ever applied to women, not to men). They absolutely have feet of clay on women's issues.

I personally doubt that is true. Some sections will hype this for their own agenda. Having followed news reports of other major events and later finding out that some reports turned out to be incorrect later on, I think you have to be sceptical about some of the thngs that papers like the Daily Mail or others are now reporting.

Luna If anything, this thread has very clearly shown that people are acutely aware of the need to move beyond racism if we are to try and solve social problems. The posters have almost uniformly highlighted that it's pointless to assume that everyone in a specific social group will be the same, thus 'tarring everyone with the same brush'. People are not stupid. They know that based on personal experience, it's impossible to say that 'all women are like this' or 'all Muslims are like this' because there are always exceptions. There are many counterexamples. Given this, most people move on fairly quickly from getting bogged down in arguments about the physicalities of race (or sex, or sexuality) to instead focusing on ideas and beliefs since these are an important driver of behaviour. I'm sure you'll agree that the world has seen more than its fair share of truly horrific ideas, be they political, economic, religious, or otherwise. These should be openly discussed, debated and changed.

Hear hear!

I see this thread being about womens' rights versus misogyny and violation and standing up for each other.

It seems now that some of those involved in the incident were recent migrants.

"His squad had detained several people who had "only been in Germany for a few weeks".

"The newspaper quoted a second police officer as confirming the 15 who were held had "residence permits for the asylum procedure".
