Is it wrong to wear fur?

I have launched a fairly venomous attack on Xenia, glibly implying that 10,000 of you will agree with me. Here are some 'edited highlights' of what started it...

By Xenia on Sunday, 10 December, 2006 8:45:30 ...The girls have a huge range of interests (including intimate knowledge of London nightclubs.. I think one got into conversation with a famous chef at ChinaWhite one night when he ought to have been dealing with his children and being with his wife, rather than chatting up pretty blondes wearing fur?.)

wearing fur?

By Xenia on Sunday, 10 December, 2006 9:00:13
Fur... of course. Surely from my posts you could tell my family would wear fur? 160,000 vicunas now roam Peru I think it is because they had been dying out but then were farmed for their fur. It saved the species and yet Blair bans fur farming. There is no hope but thankfully the planet is big and the world our oyster.
Later...
Did you mean I wasn't clear on fur ro you think we can wear leather shoes and murder plants but not something that looks sweet and fluffy (unless it's a calf in which case then it's okay to kill it but only if the skin is a by-product even though we no more need to eat meat than we need to wear skins)? Thankfully a week today I will be somewhere amongst many fur wearers and away from the warped collective British conscience.
By Queenmummy on Monday, 11 December, 2006 3:25:09 PMOne of these days Xenia will disappear up her own a**e and suffocate herself (hopefully before she bores us all to tears with the one track argument we are all fed up with listening to. Xenia - if you really are a well-rounded and interesting person, how about talking about something new besides than this dull and done to death SAHM/WOHM thing......

By fortyplus on Tuesday, 12 December, 2006 12:00:26 AM
I take back what I said about Xenia's views being to the left of Attila the Hun.

Abhorrence of the fur trade has nothing to do with whether animals look cute & fluffy, Xenia. It's all about the pain and suffering caused to the animals and stupid bitches wanting to look like prostitutes quite happy to wear the skin of a big cat that's been killed by having a red hot poker stuffed up its anus so as not to mark the skin.

You say that you've 'worked hard to fit in' with British society since coming to this country.

You haven't got a clue. Why do you think that out of 10,000 people on mumsnet the only one who consistently agrees with you is mohze?

Your smug, sanctimonious opinions are despised by every apparently decent person on this site.

xenia where are u going at the weekend (i'm nosey and jealous)

expatinscotland · 13/12/2006 10:03

People still say 'The Alps' and not Tyrol, Chamonix, etc.?

How 1950s.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 10:06

Only because I was trying not to say where I was in case a troop of crack shot mumsnetters make out for the Alps following me with their sacks of rocks to stone me to death like that prostitute in the bible.....

France. Won't say more. I think there's snow. The web cams on the resort site show it but I suppose they might be faking it to get people out there.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2006 10:10

LOL! I have fond memories of The Alps from my climbing days.

whatwouldjesusdo · 13/12/2006 10:32

have a nice weekend then xenia.. but nobody wears fur in the Alps now, except old women in Munich. I have got a super expensive, 100% artificial Alpine jacket, which I expect to spend the whole winter in.

You remind me of a law student I knew at Oxford, who said he didnt support animal charities, because he killed bacteria every time he washed his hands, so he wasnt going to get upset about fluffy bunnies.
I am concerned about people being exploited in the 3rd world to produce cheap clothing, food being wasted while people starve etc., as well as fur. Point is, I can easily do something about fur, ie not wear it for vanity. Im working on the other things too (buying from reputable sources where I can). Just because I cant fix the whole world, doesnt mean I give up on the bits that I can fix.

kittyschristmascrackers · 13/12/2006 10:34

Good for you xenia. It seems there are quite a few people who post who have very, very hypocritical and strange views . These ideas do not stand up to scrutiny and seem to be merely vitriol(sp?) that is spouted of for the sake of it.
Btw colditz why does this thread go against the MN code/rules?

whatwouldjesusdo · 13/12/2006 10:36

lol kitty you really know how to fan the flames dont you

speedySleighmamahohoho · 13/12/2006 10:48

Xenia, can I come puurrlease? - I need a break.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2006 10:50

Hehheh, jesus. I wore my Lowe Alpine triple point ceramic jacket every time; sometimes my down jacket under it.

Didn't see anyone in furs, but then, again, we hung around other climbers.

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 13/12/2006 10:55

for fur lovers

speedySleighmamahohoho · 13/12/2006 10:56

Xenia, just wanted to add that I hope you ignore the spiteful comments because anyone who can condone violence against another human for having the temerity to wear fur has lost the argument and credibility. You have a right to express your opinion and views.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 11:00

I think they just mean the rules say don't abuse people and someone suggested stoning people in furs. It's not a problem. What is worrying is when people are apathetic and don't have views, couldn't care less who was in Government and are only interested in the state of their baby's nappy and and whether to have their breasts enlarged to keep their man.

As for if fur looks good it depends on the item. I am not that into the long fur coat look of women in those resorts. It's cumbersome and sticks out so you look like an inverted triangle. Bits of fur on things can look good.

speedySleighmamahohoho · 13/12/2006 11:02

I don't look at those links Glen because something tells me it has been purposely doctored to look even more horrific than it already is.

If I want to see horrific, I'll watch Planet Earth, e.g. in one episode, a group of apes attacked another group, stole one of the children, killed it and the whole group ate it. That's mother nature for you.

Monkeytrousers · 13/12/2006 11:05

Speedy, as far as I know only one person advocated stoning and wasn't speaking for anyone else.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 11:05

GC just read the link, thanks.

"By now even I was beginning to see the attraction of wearing fur. It is soft, sensual and makes you feel sophisticated. And, at one point, someone even told me I looked classy (and, believe me, that has never happened before)."

Interesting how national psyches differ, that something is acceptable in the UK and not France or vice versa, whether it's fur or leaving your baby in a nursery or whatever. I wonder if globalisation and an international films/TV culture will make us all more as one in views.

On other clothes that's a difficult issue. In some cultures big US companies refusing to buy goods made by children where children always do work, has thrown families back on the poverty line. It has not always worked to the benefit of that country.

kittyschristmascrackers · 13/12/2006 11:19

, not sure about fanning flames, more annoyed at the usual over emotive posting and still very at the stoning post. The comment itself isn't worth a jot, comments like that never are. It's the glib attitude of posts like that and people who support posts like that that annoy me. Still it's always easy to make nasty comments like that when you're hiding behind computer.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 12:02

I am grateful for the early women's rights activitsts who threw themselves under carriages and tried to starve themselves to death. Direct action can be quite effective. I am grateful to that boy who set up a pro animal experiments body too to give a voice to the majority who favour them- we need people like that on all sides.

dara · 13/12/2006 12:07

PSML....a debate about fur and she's off again about those wicked stay at home mothers.
Next up...AIDS...why it is all the fault of stay at home mothers....international terrorism...whey stay at home mothers are to blame...

southeastastra · 13/12/2006 12:08

the opening post is nasty, shame we can't just restart the thread with just the title!

i think the stoning comment should have maybe had a after it!

i read that article and it's quite sad that it is becoming more acceptable, but hey if it looks good that's all some people are worried about.

Judy1234 · 13/12/2006 12:13

I've never said stay at home parents are wicked. Surely even you dara are grateful women got the vote? Or may be you aren't?

dara · 13/12/2006 12:17

"not the fake namby pamby lets pretend we're otping out of capitalism by leeching off our poor husbands financially"

"What is worrying is when people are apathetic and don't have views, couldn't care less who was in Government and are only interested in the state of their baby's nappy"

Same old boring crap, really, eh?

Monkeytrousers · 13/12/2006 12:23

FFS who supported it? I didn't.

kittyschristmascrackers · 13/12/2006 12:31

What the hell has this got to do with sahms dara? Honestly how can you possibly that comment in that way? I guess this is something that you feel very touchy about and there fore are looking for comments that prove a point to you, whether these comments exist or not?

Monkeytrousers · 13/12/2006 12:33

(Dino I'm going to follow your advice. It's all getting at bit BBC forum for me - circular and dull)

trice · 13/12/2006 12:45

I wouldn't want to wear fur that was produced in a cruel way but I am not sure that you can't farm chinchillas in a humane manner - people keep them as pets so they can't be hard to raise. Why they would need to be killed with red hot pokers up their rears as one poster suggested rather than the usual electric shock used on poultry etc I don't know. It is no different in my eyes to eating meat. That being the case I am really shocked by the death threats being issued against madonna for her chinchilla coat.

I know that she is high profile and considered a fashion icon and that campaigners think her choice of clothes will influence the masses but you don't see a lot of people in those pointy bras do you?

If you want to wear antique or charity fur then you are admitting that fur clothing is desirable and glamourous. This could encourage less scrupulous folk to go out and buy cruelly produced fur, this may or may not bother you.

I don't own and shall not be buying fur but I would not attack someone who chose to do so. I would happily campaign against inhumane trapping or farming of any sort but do not agree with banning the wearing of fur.

Xenia - I don't agree with everything you say but you have a right to your own views. Please carry on posting.
