What do Christians think? Is this offensive? I think it is. But, then I think the culprit is probably CH4, not the Muslim community.

Perhaps we could have the Pope in a bikini. Now that would be offensive.

Of course it's going to be controversial. They are hardly going say "Hey let's come up with an idea that will interest no-one"

Actually, being an atheist (I wonder if teh Christians will let me "celebrate" Christmas?), I'm not particularly interested in what she, teh Queen of any other religious figure will say.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 06/12/2006 14:21

LOL uwila. I'd love to see the day.

UnquietDad · 06/12/2006 14:22

You mean someone like the Archbishop of Canterbury? Because his Christmas Day sermon is hardly ever covered in the media at alll, is it?...

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 06/12/2006 14:24

UnquietDad, let's be honest, in our postmodern, nihilist society, the media love to thrust these juxtapositions on us to challenge our political correctness to the max.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:25

Not a Christian myself, but come on - just a day - I don't bankrupt myself each December and spend stressful hours slaving over dinner, decorating trees and hanging out for LONG hours with my parents and inlaws because this is just a day. I do recognise that the significance of Christmas is based on a religious festival celebrating the birth of Jesus - and that for many people it is not only a family holiday but a sacred part of their calendar.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:27

Do you really think that the media challenges us? That really is a shocking thought.

Tinker · 06/12/2006 14:28

I prefer to think of it as Yule

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:30

Well, think of it as yule. I know yule.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:30

sorry about that, couldnt resist [fgrin}

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:31

...

Tinker · 06/12/2006 14:31

Ho ho ho

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 06/12/2006 14:35

I think it is hilarious watching politicians and journalists wriggling carefully round a contentious subject.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 14:38

Yes that is entertaining.

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 15:24

Maybe that should be the CHristmas TV entertainment instead.

twelvedaysofchristmas · 06/12/2006 15:28

It sounds like an unbearably polictally correct, "thought provoking", channel 4 sort of thing to do.

Blu · 06/12/2006 15:37

Anyway, maybe HRH will wear a veil to deliver her message.
Does anyone know what she will wear?

twelvedaysofchristmas · 06/12/2006 15:41

A fixed insincere smile as per usual, I should think.

Blu · 06/12/2006 15:45

And given the rest of BBC1's programming for Christmas day, how, if the TV schedules for the day need to reflect the holy significance of the day, do you feel Little Britain contributes? or even EastEnders?

bundle · 06/12/2006 15:47

anyone read The Queen's Knickers?

speedySleighmamahohoho · 06/12/2006 16:23

I think C4 are trivialising Islam and Christianity by doing this because they know that it will cause consternation and resentment amongst some.

I could not care less one way or the other because I make it a point to not watch either of the speeches.

At least in the UK, all faiths are free to pray and worship how they like, unlike places like Saudi Arabia (I don't think there are many synagogues there, if any). Maybe the radical Muslims like those who condemned John Reid for having the temerity to visit a predominantly Muslim area in the UK would do well to reflect on that.

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 18:04

Thats a very good point. CH4 isn't respecting either religion with this.

MistleToo · 06/12/2006 18:11

I vote Jordan to deliver the Eid message on C4

Blu · 06/12/2006 18:15

We have no idea what this woman is going to say!

Perhaps people could simply desist from consternation and resentment...take some responsibility alongside C4 and their ratings frenzy!

And forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the Christian thing be to desist from consternation and resentment , at least uhntil you know what is going to be said?

For myself, I feel that, in principle, a thoughtful Muslim woman can tell me as much about the world we live in and how we might view peace and goodwill on earth in the coming year as the Queen.

I won't be watching TV, but it will be hard to escape the ho-hah - especially since it has already started.

whatwouldjesusdo · 06/12/2006 18:17

I'm not in the least bothered about hearing from a Muslim woman on Christmas or any other day. I am dismayed that Channel4 seems to be encouraging the veil as a symbol of Islam (which is it NOT), just to make a "statement" and boost ratings.
