What do Christians think? Is this offensive? I think it is. But, then I think the culprit is probably CH4, not the Muslim community.

I am sure the Daily Mail will have a rational and balanced article on this tomorrow.

nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:20

i agree dontlookatme

Piffle · 06/12/2006 13:20

uwila, but Iran is not famed as an open and embracing multi cultural society as the Uk purports to be.
perfectly legitimate to offer programmes for all cultures in a country that embraces so many.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 13:20

I agree Blu, but I am still very sceptical about the motive behind this programming decision. I will watch it and hope that it has substance.

uwila · 06/12/2006 13:20

Amen, Zephyr!

Blu · 06/12/2006 13:20

Uwila - i was simply responding to PPB's indignant 'oh what would happen if THEY' did this that or the other...and it isn't even a real situation.

Wait, listen, then decide.

Again, Dispatches have a good rep.

uwila · 06/12/2006 13:23

I'd just like to remind everyone that in my OP I did say I thought the culprit was C4, not the muslim community.

OP posts:
BooWho · 06/12/2006 13:24

I think it is offensive and I am a Christian.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 13:25

I agree Dispatches is informative, but I think like many other C4 programmes it can sometimes veer towards sensationalism. Maybe this is sometimes a necessary ploy to get people interested enough to watch a current events programme, but I think that it is a very fine line between that and rendering your argument purile...

uwila · 06/12/2006 13:26

Fair enough, Blu. Perhaps her message will be pleasant... but I sort of doubt it.

The point is if the shoe wason the other foot, it would cause outrage, riots even. So why is it okay to mock Christianity. And they are mocking it because they deliberately sought out a feisty muslim woman to give a "thought provoking" message on Christmas Day.

OP posts:
onzephyrstdayofchristmas · 06/12/2006 13:26

But why do they need to do it at all? When I was younger there was never any other faith getting involved in Christmas?? It's purely because nowadays pc-ness has gone so ott that we are too scared to not do it.

(No angry santa hats??! )

Plibble · 06/12/2006 13:26

The alternative christmas message isn't necessarily a comment on christmas or christianity. I don't think that in the past it has been especially contraversial either - they just seem to use it to highlight an issue which is in the media a lot anyway. For example, Jamie Oliver's message last year was just an opportunity for him to put his point re school dinners again.

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 13:27

Actually I wouldn't go as far to say that I fell "indignant", and I did say it wouldn't offend me if it wasn't an anti-Christian Message.

Tortington · 06/12/2006 13:28

if the true meaning of christmas was culturally peeled back to what it is - a celebration of christ and christ to come, then one would think this particularly was in poor taste, after all CH4 are unlikley to do the same thing around an important muslim festival.

do unto others......

reverse it - then ask yourself is it right?

As it is i am afraid white people who are inately racist will remember once that they were baptised - although never attended church since ( except for a christening and that was just for the piss up after) spout stuff about this being a christian country , yet still lack the conviction of their own dross.

I am just sick of Christmas being used. I for one and reclaiming it openly and loudly as MY religous Festival.

i wouldnt intrude on someone elses , especially to make a point. its rude and crass and highly objectionable. Poor, Poor taste all round

Remember folks. Buy your Christmas cards from a charity shop or the back of church. Spread your christmas message, not with cartoon cards but with holy scenes reminding everyone what the day is truly about.

its not about the billions of credt card debt and capitalism.

bundle · 06/12/2006 13:29

many of the past alternative Christmas day messages on C4 have been pretty provocative, I wouldn't have thought the slot is designed to be "pleasant" but rather thought-provoking.

dh is a confirmed republican, you'd never catch him watching the Queen's speech, so err, the answer is don't watch it (on either channel) if you're that easily offended.

BrummieOnTheRun · 06/12/2006 13:29

"perfectly legitimate to offer programmes for all cultures in a country that embraces so many"

Agree piffle, but in the context of recent reports about x% of public sector employees fearing they'll be sued if they stick a Xmas tree up at Xmas, there will undoubtedly be criticism that there's a muslim - not Christian - message at Xmas (will be conveniently ignored that C4 wouldn't do that anyway).

Will be jumped on by all the media regardless of its merit as another example of the 'host' country denying its own culture for the sake of new entrants' sensibilities, blah, blah. Exactly the controversy C4 are after.

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 06/12/2006 13:30

oliveoil you should see the article in the DAily Express today.
they were outraged about it in a very vague way indeed and managed to find some tory MP for Shipley who said it was offensive to Christians.will see if I can find a link

nailpolish · 06/12/2006 13:30

who watches telly on xmas day anyway

Piffle · 06/12/2006 13:31

Well I presume that the TV will be given over to charlie and lola dvds or other such joyous xmas offerings on the actual day.
So in this house it's a moot point as it were.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 13:31

True Plibble, but then it is stupid to call it an "alternative Christmas message" it is just an "alternative message" to (alternative to the Queen's Speech - which is a Christmas message) and they could put ANYONE on the air and talk about ANYTHING at all - and if they do it on that day, why not on others? Please lets not pretend that they are not using a Christian holiday to foster controversy and make money (I am not a practicing Christian but even I can see that)

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 06/12/2006 13:32

everyone is FURIOUS apparently

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 13:33

I think its unfair to say that white people are inately racist.

Tortington · 06/12/2006 13:34

but they are using a christian festival to do this. even though we know its a stunt - they still are.

that in itself is wrong, becuase they arn't doing it on any other day.

Tortington · 06/12/2006 13:34

i didn't say white people were inately racist.

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 06/12/2006 13:35

Will any of us honestly be watching this stuff on Christmas day? I'm far more likely to be challenging the boys at Hungry Hippos while downing an enormous selection box
