Budget 2015 - what do you think?

Today at 12.30pm - and with only 50 days until the general election - chancellor George Osborne will deliver the last budget of this government. Amongst other things, he’s expected to announce an increase in the personal tax allowance, a reduction in the rate at which savings are taxed and, possibly, a move on inheritance tax. We'd love to know what you'd like to see emerge from his briefcase - and to hear what you think as he announces his measures.

I'd love to see zero hour contracts outlawed. But what the net effect of that? Some people will be taken on temp or part time permanent contracts, whereas lots of others will 'lose' their jobs. Hard to see if you can really lose a job that doesn't promise you a certain number of hours anyway, but the government will not want to suddenly see lots more jobless and therefore lots more signing on.

Fabulous so far - Ed Balls looks sick as a pig!!! Grin

You can't deny these figures, Go George!

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 12:45

Highest rate of employment in British history.

NessaYork · 18/03/2015 12:46

Forgive me for going off-topic but I was supposed to be at Mumstock today in London. Missed out due to a banking screw-up on budget day (with added complication of train ticket screw up) means I am instead at home in my sweat pants and still feel like crying. Trying not to channel my inner Cinderella. National budget just makes it worse.
(I'm really just asking for sympathy.)

Cant comment as i would normally as mn is still being very frustrating on my ipad.

But if its all so hunky dorey why did almost 1 million people need food from trussell trust food banks last year?

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 13:10

Define need.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2015 13:15

Rather a conflict with greenest government ever claims!!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2015 13:17

trussell trust figures self explanatory.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2015 13:19

Invest in maths and science teachers and this will trickle into scientific research and manufacturing industries.

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/03/2015 13:19

He has a quite a good sense of humour. I'm impressed!

SoonToBeSix · 18/03/2015 13:19

No Arm the childcare help via tax credits is the same for lone parents and couples!!

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 13:19

Big difference between using food banks and needing food banks.

glenthebattleostrich · 18/03/2015 13:21

Zro hours contracts have their place. My cousin is at university and he's works well from both sides (hers and employers).

They need to be better regulated, but they do suit some people.

I'm quite impressed so far. Who knew Georgie is quite funny!

SoonToBeSix · 18/03/2015 13:21

Badgers than makes no sense a NMW worker could just have themselves to support. A benefit claimant could also have three dc.

meglet · 18/03/2015 13:23

armchair tax credits have been cut, there isn't free childcare for lp's and the csa is being pulled apart so we will have to pay for it and be at risk from my abusive XP.

sorry you think lp's have it easy Hmm .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2015 13:23

Im not going to engage with you armchair, i dont have the patience not to be rude today.

glenthebattleostrich · 18/03/2015 13:23

Curious to know how the tax return thing will work. I'm self employed so could make life easier if it works.

meglet · 18/03/2015 13:24

armchair yes, couples might get less by they have 2 salaries, 2 people who can juggle their annual leave, 2 potential extended families to help with childcare.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 18/03/2015 13:25

Armchair you can't just walk into a food bank and take food you do have to show a need.

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 13:26

The personal tax allowance is vital. Absolutely brilliant.

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 13:27

Also fab news to raise the 40% threshold to £50K . About time.

Agree with everything so far - Gerge is being awesome!

ihategeorgeosborne · 18/03/2015 13:28

Yes, Why did labour leave the personal tax allowance at 6.5k I wonder. Although it was the coalition that reduced the HRT from 44 to 42k. They have said they will rectify this. We'll see.

WinifredBanks · 18/03/2015 13:29

Disappointed about them bringing down the pension lifetime allowance; I think that more people will therefore invest their savings in the buy-to-let housing market to produce a retirement income, inflating house prices again.

InMySpareTime · 18/03/2015 13:33

He's cut Class 2 NI for self-employed. How do I (as a low-earning SE) keep up my pension entitlement?
I suspect my "voluntary contributions" will go up...

cheminotte · 18/03/2015 13:33

Only caught the end of it. Removing (most) tax on savings makes sense, although that's only pennies for most people.
