From the telegraph..

By Agencies4:28PM BST 04 Sep 2014
A woman has been beheaded in a back garden.
The victim was found at an address in Nightingale Road, Edmonton, north London, just after 1pm today.
Scotland Yard gave few details but said that a man has been arrested.
The force said: "Police were called to an address in Nightingale Road at 13.07pm today to reports of a stabbing incident.
"On arrival officers discovered a female collapsed in a garden area.
"A man has been detained and remains in custody.
"At this very early stage we are not in a position to give further details."
There is no suggestion that the killing had any terrorist motive.
Scotland Yard said a firearms officer had suffered a broken wrist in the course of arresting the 25-year-old man who is being held on suspicion of murder.
Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin, leading this investigation, said: "This was a highly visible attack in broad daylight on a residential street. I can understand why this may cause people concern, however we are confident that we are not looking for anyone else at this stage.
"Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is not terrorist related.
"Local officers and specialist detectives are at the scene and will remain there for many hours to come.
"Specially trained family liaison officers will be deployed to support the family; we request that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Scary.

I do understand how news works.

I was commenting on the way news works- and finding it wanting.

BornFreeButinChains · 05/09/2014 12:06

I do not think you do Hakluyt.

People would not want to sit through endless lists of deaths all over the country at 6pm every night.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 05/09/2014 16:32

Perhaps if we did have to sit through a list of all the female victims of male violence on the news over tea, we might actually do something about it.

Its not just women though is it, men die too.
There have been huge drives in recent years to tackle domestic violence, as ever long way to go but there has been huge campaigns, throughout pregnancy I was asked if all was ok in marriage, there was notes on backs of loo doors, advertising confidential help if needs be, police are hot on it too, responding fast to calls on it.

I'm bemused by the idea that it's strange or offensive for thoughts of terrorism to cross one's mind at the news of a beheading in a suburban street - whether scruffy or smart.

Beheadings in England have been relatively out of fashion as a method of killing since the 17th century or earlier.

When I heard the news I thought it was domestic violence because the victim was a woman. If the victim had been a man I'd have thought of terrorism. Why wouldn't I have done?

As it happens, both my thoughts were wrong.

It appears to have been an attack by a disturbed stranger on a sprightly old woman doing her gardening who may or may not have been defending her cat.

In that way she reminds me a lot of my mum. And that devastates me.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 05/09/2014 16:56

Men are also primarily killed by other men. So male violence is still the problem.

Sorry, I should have added that they've come back into vogue lately as a method of political murder so it's not an unreasonable idea to think about that.

But as it appears to have been disproved in this case, there's no cause for alarm that any groups are going to be wrongly targeted.

MrsDeVere, thank you for being the voice of reason on this thread.

My first thought was that it was a disturbed individual. Not a terrorist.

Snap, OnlyLovers. I thought that too. Not because I'm Sherlock Holmes but because I heard the victim was a woman. There are female soldiers but not as many as male ones.

I'm obviously sophisticated, but not that much because I guessed it was domestic violence and it looks like I wrong.

It looks like it was far more unusual than that - a probable stranger attack.

But I don't think it was wrong of people to think of terrorism when they first heard of this.

What I do think it was wrong to condemn them for that and odd to expect them to be familiar with the ins and outs of London neighbourhoods.

There's a barracks in Knightsbridge, btw. I don't live there but I've heard it's quite nice and I imagine a prime target.

Is this an IQ test? My first thought was DV as it was a woman, swiftly followed by wondering if it was terror related. How many points do I score on the smug, I'm more superior than you table?

BornFreeButinChains · 05/09/2014 18:42

Is this an IQ test?

Grin.

Only on MN, good grief.

Rather like all that Daren Brown subliminal messaging, in the papers, a few days ago, there was a beheading, its on OUR BRAINS.

Curiouslygrumpycola · 05/09/2014 20:12

Just caught up with some of the articles about this.

Poor woman and her family. RIP

hackmum · 05/09/2014 20:29

I initially assumed it was domestic violence too, simply because when a woman is killed in her own home, it's usually her husband/boyfriend/ex who is the murderer. If it had happened in the middle of the street, I might have thought "terrorist". It's all about statistical probability, isn't it? As limited points out, a murder carried out by a stranger in the victim's own home is unusual. Not just unusual, but extremely rare.

Obviously it was on the brain of this attacker too. Who knows if recent events put the idea of running amok with a machete into his head? Yes he has to be disturbed in some way (mental problems? Drugs?) but most people don't have a machete just lying around the place do they.
