From the telegraph..

By Agencies4:28PM BST 04 Sep 2014
A woman has been beheaded in a back garden.
The victim was found at an address in Nightingale Road, Edmonton, north London, just after 1pm today.
Scotland Yard gave few details but said that a man has been arrested.
The force said: "Police were called to an address in Nightingale Road at 13.07pm today to reports of a stabbing incident.
"On arrival officers discovered a female collapsed in a garden area.
"A man has been detained and remains in custody.
"At this very early stage we are not in a position to give further details."
There is no suggestion that the killing had any terrorist motive.
Scotland Yard said a firearms officer had suffered a broken wrist in the course of arresting the 25-year-old man who is being held on suspicion of murder.
Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin, leading this investigation, said: "This was a highly visible attack in broad daylight on a residential street. I can understand why this may cause people concern, however we are confident that we are not looking for anyone else at this stage.
"Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is not terrorist related.
"Local officers and specialist detectives are at the scene and will remain there for many hours to come.
"Specially trained family liaison officers will be deployed to support the family; we request that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Scary.

I saw the headline and thought yet another female victim of male violence, and the only reason people are discussing it is because of events in the middle east in the last few days. The other 100 women killed so far this year in the UK by male violence weren't interesting enough stories on their own. Poor woman.

HeySoulSister · 04/09/2014 23:20

Well I'm sure we will find out eventually

Thanks for linking that, wiganerpie.

It does look as though multiple eyewitnesses have producing very similar accounts of the series of events.

As people seem to have missed it.

3 women have been beheaded in London in the last 6 months.

This one is awful, and it's right that there is news coverage, but the other 2 women, not a peep. Killed by their partners. Maybe it's only dramatic enough for the news agencies to be interested if it's a stranger who does it.

Stranger murder IS a bigger news story, because it's so rare.

CaptChaos · 05/09/2014 00:53

Ah, so a woman having her head cut off by her partner isn't exciting enough for journalists to bother with then? I would hate to be one, I could never be so cold and heartless.

AuntieStella · 05/09/2014 06:46

This thread is about a random stranger attack, in which one person died, others were attacked/threatened, and police had to damage property (breaking doors and windows) to evacuate bith adult and child residents urgently as the criminal jumped between gardens of terraced houses.

(And comparable multi-victim attacks by machete wielding strangers have also been headline news, Lisa Potts received a George Medal for protecting children when it happened, both incident and outcome having been in the headlines).

There has been no further news overnight, though police continue to be by the arrested man in hospital.

Lottiedoubtie · 05/09/2014 07:01

Shock this thread is outrageous. I cant believe the judgemental sniping at other posters going on.

Can't we stick to feeling appalled that this happened to a real person and discussing the news story?

Hakluyt · 05/09/2014 07:32

You know what I find outrageous? That on average 2 women a week are killed by their partners in this country and and not a ripple of news about them. Now that's outrageous......

CaptChaos · 05/09/2014 07:42

It is indeed Hakluyt. Have you seen Karen Ingala Smith's blog? Counting Dead Women

Also in North London yesterday www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-29074100

There is something about beheading that provokes - in me at least - a visceral fear.

Yes, I share this reaction. There is something I find particularly shocking and upsetting about this kind of attack. Though logically, I suppose it is no worse than any other way in which people might be killed. :(

What I don't share is the assumption that beheading means it's a terrorist attack. It did not even cross my mind until I heard on the news that the police thought it wasn't linked to terrorism. Confused

This is a link from DM which suggests that the man with a machete had been killing cats before he killed this lady. Shocking Sad.

Bambambini · 05/09/2014 09:04

I actually think derailing this thread to talk about why folk aren't more outraged about domestic abuse of women and murder by a partner is a bit insulting to what happened to this poor woman and the others attacked. This seems to be random crazed attack.

What an awful thing to happen to this poor lady and for her family and friends to deal with.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 05/09/2014 09:23

People are upset when people are murdered in domestic incidents. But yes, more so, by random stranger attacks.

The same with children, it is terrible when they are murdered by family members, but it is even more scary and shocking - and taps into deeper fears - when children are taken by strangers.

I feel the tone of cynicism on this thread, "oh, it's just another beheading, happens a lot," or, "so what if a stranger did it, women are killed all the time," is really misplaced.

Hakluyt · 05/09/2014 09:32

I am anything but cynical, I assure you.

Cynicism is thinking it's OK for "ordinary" deaths not to be news.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 05/09/2014 09:40

Nah, that's realism.

Its massively important that domestic violence - (understatement - I mean, murder by family members) is shouted about, reported and noted.
Of course. However, I don't think there is anything wrong with having a strong, shocked reaction to the beheading of a woman in a garden. We didn't know if it was domestic, terrorist, or a random crazy, but either way it's a particularly horrific way to die.

BornFreeButinChains · 05/09/2014 09:41

Cynicism is thinking it's OK for "ordinary" deaths not to be news

I think its a mis understanding of what news is, its a product sold to us by TV stations.

Bowlersarm · 05/09/2014 10:13

Ordinary deaths aren't going to be in the news. They aren't newsworthy. That's the reality of it.

Nancy66 · 05/09/2014 10:15

God, some people really really don't understand how news works do they? Nothing to do with journalists being 'cold and heartless.'

limitedperiodonly · 05/09/2014 10:39

Do you still have a heart nancy66? I have a black, stinking void where mine used to be. It makes it a lot easier to laugh at twattish comments.

Nancy66 · 05/09/2014 10:41

Well I have only kicked 3 puppies so far this morning so I think I'm getting better....
