Part 2: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Starting a new thread as the original is almost full.

The original thread is here. It was started on 1st July after three Israeli boys were found murdered, before the murder of the Palestinian boy and the resumption of sustained rocket attacks and Operation Protective edge.

There are lots of excellent posts and links in the original thread showcasing a variety of views. The main consensus was that there is fault on both sides. We also considered various options for people on both sides of the conflict to work towards a lasting peace.

I agree with pp. Jon Snow has been amazing (gives us hope).

somewheresafe · 24/07/2014 19:50

There has to be hope. Especially on bleak days like today when israel plunges to new depths of cruelty and depravity. The unwra building was hit causing more casualties. Robert Turner the director of unwra confirmed to al jazeera that there was no warning. Although there are reports that the warning bomb system is itself going to be investigates as a war crime.

Reports also that unwra has been begging for a 2 hour window from israel to allow injured civilians to leave this was refused.

Jon Snow, thnk goodness for journos like him...all the Israeli spokesmen Ive seen on tv look like emotionless robots spouting their scripty mantras...the little baby getting shrapnel extracted out of its back without anaesthetic, the man in pieces as all his six children were blown up at the UN school, the picture I seen in twitter of a little child with half its head blown off...this is nothing short of madness and still the cowards of the world wont be strong enough to condemn Israels actions, Obama, Blair, Cameron, new UK foreign minister, even Moon and the UN high commissioner....and wheres the bloody Pope please??

I dont cry easily but thats changed

Id also like to know WHY the Israelis just dont lift their blockade of Gaza...its NOT THEIR LAND or right to do so...it seems to me Israel is unwilling to offer anything at all for a peace

Meanwhile Israeli students apparently have been offered scholarships to tweet propaganda hashtag israelunderfire...what a joke

somewheresafe · 24/07/2014 19:57

The world is speaking. Jews in Israel are also speaking out, there have been protests and clashes within israel my family tell me.

Israel is not only at war with palestine. It is losing a war with Twitter and social media. There are also issues within israeli society and I commend jews in Israel who speak up as they have a lot to lose by doing so. This article from.the Washington post is brilliant and explains why mote and more reservists are not wanting to commit genocide any longer.

If the change can come from within israeli society then there is hope for the region. www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/07/23/we-are-israeli-reservists-we-refuse-to-serve/

Springheeled · 24/07/2014 20:12

Oh Jon Snow, so amazing. Just watching channel 4 plus 1. He's ripping into that idiot spokesperson!
Did anyone see Kirsty Wark on newsnight last night? She was utterly shockingly biased and quite vile.

emma2277 · 24/07/2014 20:17

kirsty wark is a waste of space, the bbc in general have been in the coverage

AndHarry · 24/07/2014 20:31

zinher I made my point badly. What I meant was that there are documented eyewitness and participant accounts of the IDF using human shields in recent years (although none that I've seen from this conflict yet), but none that I've come across of Hamas using their own civilians as cover over these past few weeks. The constant line that the civilian death toll is so high because Hamas is using the Palestinian civilians as human shields is unsubstantiated.

I disliked Netanyahu and his inflammatory rhetoric even before this conflict began. Now he sounds like a computer. This clip of him hitting back at criticism from the UN is unbelievable. He actually genuinely believes that he is doing nothing wrong and anything bad happening is all Hamas' fault. That's quite chilling really.

I don't think this is going to stop until Hamas runs out of rockets. May that be tonight!

Re Netanyahu , his popularity in Israel is nosediving. He is loathed by many there. And is proving to be a liability for the US too.

AndHarry · 24/07/2014 20:51

He's always been a liability to the US. Madeleine Albright practically wrote off all chances of a peace settlement when he was elected in during her tenure as Secretary of State.

I have been following this and the previous thread avidly and have really learned a lot. I've been watching a lot of videos to try and see the situation from both perspectives. I cannot help but feel utterly enraged by some of biased propaganda which is going a long way to explain why the west has been so happy to overlook the plight of the palestinian people for so long.

this one particularly made me clench my teeth:

donnie · 24/07/2014 22:16

Netanyahu has never wanted peace. He hates Palestinians and denounced Yitzhak Rabin/Arafat's peace initiatives, calling the former a 'traitor to the Jewish cause'. He is a dangerous, warmongering racist. I have just watched him on television, justifying the murder of women, children and UN workers in a UN shelter school as 'the work of Hamas'. He is bombing Gazans with white phos and fleschette shells (nail bombs). They came from Israeli weapons but , still, 'it was Hamas'.

WTF are ordinary Israelis - the ones who have a conscience - doing about this? what kind of protests are they offering? are they rebelling? are they going to try to oust this lunatic who is making the name of Israel hated worldwide?

To anyone who calls Hamas 'terrorists' - really? you think? and what is Netanyahu? the man who deliberately blockades an entire people for years, starving them and depriving them of water, medicine, work? the man who deliberately orders new swathes of Palestinian land and farms to be stole and given to Israelis, creating homelessness, poverty and refugees among Palestinians. The man who orders the bombing of UN schools and refugee areas and then claims "It wasn't me, it was Hamas".

What an utterly loathesome, cowardly racist . What a terrorist.

I just find myself crying every time I check Facebook Sad . The images and real news reports about what is happening on the ground is heartbreaking. I am appalled. I have only just discovered too that the bastards murdered 1400 Palestinians in Operation Cast Lead in 2008. The media must've completely downplayed what was happening then too just like they've tried to this time. People complain about Facebook all the time but it is only through social media that the public are finding out just what these psychotic bastards are up to. The last straw is the UK, Ireland and the rest of the EU abstaining on the UN vote to investigate Israel for war crimes when they are committing genocide on the world stage. I am quickly losing faith in humanity Sad

Springheeled · 24/07/2014 22:43

The news brought me to tears tonight but at least Emily Maitliss is giving Mark Regev a run for his money, a vast improvement on Kirsty Wark's bollocks yesterday. The only thing keeping me going is the thought that at least there is the demonstration in London on Sat. I hope it is huge.

Handsup · 24/07/2014 22:53

I'm planning on going to the demo this Saturday. I can't cope with the images of petrified shell shocked children - feel so useless.
Both Jon Snow and Johnathan Miller have been amazing despite the vile Louise Mensche stirring in the back ground on twitter, accusing him of being biased.

Handsup · 24/07/2014 22:54

I think I've spelt her name wrong too but couldn't give a toss about that either.

zinher · 24/07/2014 23:08

Where is the demonstration?

zinher · 24/07/2014 23:09

I mean where in London?

Another waste of space, she wouldnt be saying as much if her daughters brains were blown out

Springheeled · 24/07/2014 23:11

Demonstration starts at 12 at Israeli embassy (is it high street Kensington tube?) and the rally is at 2.30 at parliament.

zinher · 24/07/2014 23:13

Thanks

Fakebook · 24/07/2014 23:13

Absolutely shocking images on C4 today. That 2.5 year old baby...my own son is the same age...it broke my heart.

I don't know what else I can do to help except keep sharing news stories on Facebook and twitter to raise awareness. But what's the point? Until Obama or David Scameron step up it looks like the Palestinians will be wiped out.

I bet the zionists of the highest order are having a good laugh. This has always been the plan I bet.

wannabestressfree · 24/07/2014 23:18

I don't like the last statement you just made at all fakebook. Can we just stick to the facts and not anti Semitic rantings.

PigletJohn · 24/07/2014 23:19

I hear that the IDF will be attacking the infrastructure for mobile phones, so a lot of contact will be lost and we won't see so many shocking images.

It is quite usual for armies of occupation to want to prevent anyone seeing the evidence of what they're up to.
