Thread 2 here - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/in_the_news/2049921-Oscar-Pistorius-trial-part-2

To continue our respectful, open, interesting discussion.

Seeing how he's refused to take responsibility for ANYTHING (including the miraculously firing gun), how he's blamed friends for lying, police for everything that was wrong about crime scene photos, his lawyer for not giving him the right info about gun negligence charges and of course accusing an opponent of cheating after losing at the Olympics- I think he's convinced himself he's going to get away with it.

Based on what I've seen so far I expect he's going to get some jail time and it's going to be a huge shock for him. He's been out on bail for ages, he's allegedly got a new girlfriend... I think he sees this trial as another of the challenges he's had to face in life and that he's going to overcome.
He feels sorry for himself because he's convinced he's the victim in what happened that might.

Anyway that's my sleep deprived cheap psychological insight. It sounds a lot more eloquent in my head! Grin

anon sounds entirely spot on.

HowAboutNo · 14/04/2014 05:15

This is a talking point in our house every day. As I've said before, DH is convinced he's guilty and when I hear his reasoning ("not checking where she was? Didn't see her get up? Running into the danger round a blind corner on stumps?") I do understand that POV. I feel like if he was so worried about being burgled, he would've taken more steps to be ultra safe (bars on windows, etc).

The thought of being burgled chills me, Thanks to those who have had to deal with that. It must really screw with the way you feel and act in your own house.

Today will be interesting.

Reeva is firmly in my thoughts.

Glad you mentioned sex, nomoreinfo, as I had been wondering about sex that night. They had only been together 3 months and yet there is no mention of them having sex that night, which seems strange to me.

Lots more fascinating posts from everyone.

Has any evidence been presented that the cricket bat marks must have happened after the gunshots (eg. splintering, etc.)?

If she did take her phone with her, I can't believe she wouldn't have called somebody (barring lack of reception of course) if she'd been trapped inside the cubicle and with that going on.

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:00

I think voice some witnesses are saying that they heard the cricket bat noises after the gunshots, but who knows. I sort of feel that we are having to accept some of what witnesses are saying and not others if that makes sense.

Some really interesting posts on here since I was last on. Roadkill that's a great post and I have always wondered how to square the fact he was vulnerable, scared of burglars, always had to have a gun at the ready WITH his crap security - ladders up at windows, no burglar bars, alarms on/off. He seems pretty lax with his security to me.

Anon agree with all of that. He has had to face huge hurdles in his life and this is another one. However, I don't think he thought through the implications and how close he would come to being found guilty. I think he is remorseful, but only for himself and what his actions now mean for him.

I know I'm jumping ahead here - but if he does get off and walks free, I hope he doesn't become some sort of saint who overcame adversity against all odds. I hope he disappears and leads a quiet life somewhere.

This is a very interesting thread and I take on board all everyone has said because it is just puzzling me as there's never been anything quite like this - there is no doubt he shot and killed her, it's the intent that has to be established and what a grey area that is.

mummylin2495 · 14/04/2014 08:08

Could someone please tell me what time the trial starts today, thanks

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:09

8.30 mummy

voiceofgodot · 14/04/2014 08:11

I also wanted to add that I would not make any judgement based on the fact he has been seen smiling coming out of court. The world's press will have been falling over themselves to get a photo like that and I haven't seen any so far - he has looked very sombre indeed. Just because in perhaps one occasion he smiled at somebody means nothing.

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:11

Rousette I really really cant see how he will walk free, because even if the court believes and concludes that he shot in terrible error, I think he has to be found guilty of the gun charges, which I believe have a custodial sentence, as its now obvious (proven?) that he lied about that.

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:13

I agree with that voice, its easy to smile/laugh die to nervousness, and he does have supporters waiting outside, I can imagine a smile/recognition for them.

Roussette · 14/04/2014 08:15

Onestep I would like to think so but that sounds so vengeful of me to say that. I wonder if there is a slow realisation for him then that he will go to prison and I do wonder if all the crying has been for himself as during the last year his legal team has explained to him the implications and the fact he is not going to walk free. Maybe he just thought he could walk on water? who know..

mummylin2495 · 14/04/2014 08:19

Thanks onestep

Rosie70 · 14/04/2014 08:23

Could someone please let me know if I can watch the trial live on my mobile (iphone). Can't access a TV. Thanks!

homebythesea · 14/04/2014 08:23

Long time lurker on this thread and slightly obsessed with the case!

With regard to the question of whether the cricket bat was used before the shots, IIRC there are bullet holes in one of the panels that fell out of the door which indicates the shots came before of the cricket bat blows

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:25

I think your right Roussette, I struggle with the same, my personality is to see the good in people and to always want to believe what they say, but what is strange is that the older Ive become the more suspicious I am of what I`m being told which makes things very difficult!

I do believe that you can truly convince youself that something hasnt happened or happened in a different way than what they did. And I also believe that people can do the most awful things in a heartbeat, just as someone can do the most amazing wonderful things in a heartbeat (an act of heroism).

OneStepCloser · 14/04/2014 08:25

ah thanks home

voiceofgodot · 14/04/2014 08:29

Rosie I'm watching it on my phone here www.mediaite.com/online/watch-live-here-oscar-pistorius-murder-trial-april-14th/

Roussette · 14/04/2014 08:31

I've only just realised that the trial is live on Freeview (we don't have a dish). I've watched it on and off live streaming on my laptop but it's on the telly which I didn't realise.

damn damn that's the housework out the window today then...

AuntieBrenda · 14/04/2014 08:31

Been reading the threads on and off - I accidentally saw the picture of Reeva on twitter yesterday. I just wanted to warn anyone who reads about the trial on there. The pictures appeared at the bottom of the scrolling screen. I wish I hadn't seen it. Poor love.

Aventurine · 14/04/2014 08:38

Someone mentioned that Roux gets paid in a day what Nel gets paid in a month. I wonder why there is so much more money in defence

colincaterpillar · 14/04/2014 08:56

JillJ72 and pretoriaresident - thankyou for answering my question on thread 2 (I had asked about the threat of intruders and levels of danger in SA that OP could in theory be afraid of).

All caught up now on this very fast moving thread. Marking place for further discussion throughout today's trial.

BookABooSue · 14/04/2014 09:02

I'm guessing it's because the state/public pays for prosecution whereas defence solicitors are paid for by the individual usually hence fees can be as expensive as people are willing to pay.

I'm catching some of the trial, now we know why Nel kept talking about the position of the jeans! I would never have thought that was significant (which is why I'm not a lawyer!)
