I feel sorry for Malaysia. Can you imagine how much this is costing?! Plus, they're getting flack for anything they do and anything they don't do. As they said, they'll have to buy new radar systems now they've exposed theirs to the world, and I shouldn't imagine this is helping their international exports very much. Okay, there's a lot to dislike there, but still I don't envy them.

Tinfoil hats are marvellous Grin Do you take orders?

GarlicMarchHare · 19/03/2014 18:13

Good point, difficultpickle, the toxic load Goldie linked to came from Beijing.

www.wired.com/autopia/2014/03/mh370-electrical-fire/

Apologies if this has been posted. Its a pilots view of what happened. He thinks it looks like there was an electrical problem, pilot shut down stuff (i am so technical) and tried to head for langkawi, was overcome by smoke fumes and plane crashed in Indian Ocean.

Haven't kept up with this thread but thought this article was very good.

gindrinker · 19/03/2014 18:55

Loving the foil hats ladies.
I think mine will have Viking horns.

Oubliette0292 · 19/03/2014 19:15

Right just caught up with this thread. I missed the second half of thread #3 - can anyone tell me if I need to go back and read it or not?

Goldie - have a lovely evening Wink - and thank you for your fascinating insights over the past week. I've become a huge fan (I wonder if you have inspired anyone to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering).

Not much new information today as far as I can see. I can't believe how little we know after all this time. I keep expecting a news flash telling me they've found the plane. Those poor relatives - they must be so stressed, unhappy and confused.

AGnu · 19/03/2014 19:19

I'm welding my tinfoil hat to my skull. There's Chinese terrorists, right? What if they got hold of this 'cargo' biological agent created by US, murdered the US blokes & smuggled it aboard the plane with a view to releasing it in China? Somehow it's container got damaged & it was released on the plane. Surely the US would want to hush up that terrorists got hold of something like that from them & the Chinese wouldn't want to admit that the terrorists nearly got it into the country... People on plane start getting sick, one of the terrorists freaks out & admits what it is, urgent re-route to US base for treatment... Or maybe so the US people can study the effects?!

Just popping out to buy some more foil & plenty of wallpaper paste... I'm feeling a hat isn't enough... I need a whole foil room!

Or perhaps I should stop watching so many crime dramas! Blush

I'm making a start on the list of things that have been discussed to death for the start of the next thread:

  1. Chris Goodfellow's electrical fire making the pilots turn back towards Pulau Langkawi airport and the pilots losing consciousness theory.
Reasons against:
  • The plane would not fly for seven hours if it was on fire.
  • The plane continued to fly in a way that suggests it was being flown purposefully.
  • The turn appears to have been programmed into the flight computer which takes more time than manually steering - not something you would do in an emergency situation.
  • There were closer airports that a 777 could land at.
  1. Keith Ledgerwood's theory that the plane shadowed another 777 to prevent radar detection:
Reasons against:
  • It would be very difficult to fly that close to another plane without being noticed and to time each turn precisely enough to avoid radar detection.
  1. Why didn't people phone for help?
  • There is no mobile coverage at 30000 feet.
  • There is no mobile coverage in the jungle, in the ocean etc.
  1. Could the plane land on water?
  • Very unlikely - there have only been two successful landings of a plane that large on the water since hitting water at speed is the same as hitting concrete.
  1. Could the plane land on grass, in the desert etc?
  • Possibly but it would not be possible to take off again and the cargo hold and anything in it would be crushed.

Garlic I feel unbelievably sorry for Malaysian officials too and yes re the cost both literally and to their reputation. Every morning when I see that group of men trying to say the same thing in so many ways - i.e. we don't know anything more than we did yesterday, or the day before or the day before that - my heart really goes out to them. How long will these press conferences go on for I wonder? They will not want to appear heartless but it really is pretty pointless with nothing new to report.

The relatives must be in utter agony and desperation as we saw earlier today, that poor poor woman being dragged off, how on earth is that going to help anyone? Sad.

Burmahere · 19/03/2014 19:30

Am I the only poster who hasn't looked at any other conversations on MN for the last 10 days?! I only have this thread, it's as though none of the others exist any longer

Oubliette0292 · 19/03/2014 19:33

No Burmahere - I'm the same. I haven't got a clue what is happening on any of the other threads at the moment.

Purpleknickers · 19/03/2014 19:37

I'm the same burmahere I just so want a happy outcome for the passengers I'm literally glued to it, I read a seemingly logical explanation via or on here think oooo yes then somebody else comes along and says oh but no that cannot be possible and I'm back to where the heck does a mahusive plane disappear to?

FabBakerGirl · 19/03/2014 19:39

I still can't quite believe a plane has gone missing. I watched a plane this morning go over me as I took the children to school. Just felt like I had to.

I think - hope - it turns out to be something really mundane as anything more sinister is too scary to think about.

Oubliette0292 · 19/03/2014 19:40

I think I just want a definite outcome for the relatives at this point in time. A happy ending would be wonderful, but doesn't seem likely. No knowing must just be horrible.

JKSLtd · 19/03/2014 19:43

Yes anything definite would be great at this point. Like others have said; a 'standard' crash into the ocean feels almost positive right now.

DowntonTrout · 19/03/2014 19:45

Well done Queenstromba

That should be posted at the top if the next thread, if there is one.

I predict the next piece of information in that list will be-

  1. Plane landed at Diego Garcia after bio-weapon released on board.

I could be wrong though, I have been before

ChaffinchOfDoom · 19/03/2014 19:49

good work queenstromba Grin

maybe add to no 3 regardez mobile phones... even if ringing tones are heard this means nowt just an attempt at connection
also includes other internet devices eg ipads

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 19:56

Fantastic stuff queenstromba thank you for doing that.

Wine and Cake for goldie and her DH :)

JKSLtd · 19/03/2014 19:57

Goldie - you'll be proud of me - I explained the mobile phone thing to the office Grin

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 19:59

We could include that link to the BBC on all the theories as well so people can have an overview

And maybe a good link to a site that explains the pings and ACARS etc?

Just harking back to the way points discussion....

Guardian on their summary:

'MH370 may not have used waypoints to navigate after losing contact with ground control, Malaysia’s defense minister suggested, contradicting a Reuters report last week.'

Also the FBI are working with the Malaysian government to try to uncover the data files that were deleted from the pilot's simulator. See article below.

m.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-26649690

livingzuid · 19/03/2014 20:09

Here's more in case no one saw. Was published four hours ago but I had to actually do stuff :)

'Malaysian defense minister Hishammuddin Hussein this morning appeared to contradict reporting by Reuters that MH370 navigated by waypoints after losing contact with ground control.

In an exclusive report published on 14 March, Reuters quoted two unnamed sources “familiar with investigations” as saying that “an unidentified aircraft that investigators believe was Flight MH370 was following a route between navigational waypoints when it was last plotted on military radar off the country’s northwest coast.” The Reuters report says the plane flew past waypoints Igari, Vampi, Gival and Igrex.

But in a news conference Wednesday, Hishamuddin said no waypoints were added to the aircraft’s flight routing beyond Igari:

I am aware of speculation that additional waypoints were added to the aircraft’s flight routing. I can confirm that the aircraft flew on normal routing up until the waypoint IGARI. There is no additional waypoint on MH370’s documented flight plan, which depicts normal routing all the way to Beijing.'

DS reckons that as the Russians haven't come back with info on their citizens on board, and nor have Ukraine, it's all part of a plot to dominate the main news items for a few days, whilst they quietly take over the world.
