YY, lessons, I rather think that if it's in the ocean, the black box would be found by accident if at all. I doubt the resources even exist to comb its floor in one-mile squares (assuming no shark with a tummy ache Wink)

gindrinker · 16/03/2014 21:39

What's the official protocol in a hijack situation?
Lets assume the hijack is a 9/11 type situation, they want to crash into a city.
Is it reasonable to presume the pilot would attempt to land in the sea to save as many lives in the city as possible?

GoldieMumbles · 16/03/2014 21:42

Tottering off to bed now and hoping beyond hope that we get better news tomorrow. I'll not be back in til after work tomorrow night.

Except to say - don't let it bother you flyers all that much. Unfortunately, from time to time, these things happen. But security is largely very good and it is, mostly, a good thing that we have the intelligence agencies out there making sure most fanatics don't get a chance to take over aircraft. Who knows how many of these plots they've stopped - and they'll already be learning a lot from this one. I've got plans to step on quite a few aircraft this year. DH has plans to step on a lot, lot more (for work). I'm not - touch wood - concerned any more than normal.

GarlicMarchHare · 16/03/2014 21:44

Thing is, kay, there must be enormous holes in radar coverage. I've been on jungle planes that needed no clearance & nobody knew where we were (yes, I did worry a bit!) More likely that some large military does a periodic sweep just in case - and that wouldn't be monitored too assiduously, as any aircraft over there are probably private planes doing local business. I'm not sure about the enormous planes and mountains of Mongolia/Russia as it's a well-used international corridor - but there again, you have a great deal of rugged terrain, which interferes with radar.

GarlicMarchHare · 16/03/2014 21:45

Night, Goldie! Hope all your stuff is settling down.

AlpacaYourThings · 16/03/2014 21:45

Goodnight Goldie thank you for taking the time to post, it's been fascinating reading.

GarlicMarchHare · 16/03/2014 21:46

plains and mountains - I've got planes on the brain Grin

GarthsUncle · 16/03/2014 21:48

Night Goldie!

lessonsintightropes · 16/03/2014 21:51

There's already been extensive coverage of the fact that Indian radar over the entire territory isn't switched on all the time, but 'as required', on cost grounds. This being the case in central Asian states is pretty likely too. However the hijackers would be very unlikely to be able to rely on this. If they did land it on land, an extraordinary amount of luck would be required.

lessonsintightropes · 16/03/2014 21:51

And night! Goldie, thanks for another day of myth busting Smile

Bakingnovice · 16/03/2014 21:53

The press conference was strange. I feel sorry for the Malay. It's obvious that they are struggling with it all. They seem very guarded in what info they are releasing, phrasing their sentences carefully.

Hmmkay · 16/03/2014 22:18

Garlic and lessons, that makes more sense to me then if they haven't found it and it did go over land.

I agree though, it seems so risky that there must be a degree of luck involved if it was pre planned to land somewhere.

Baffling... The whole thing Confused

BoiledPiss · 16/03/2014 22:34

Is this real? Just come up on my twitter feed

BREAKING: Boeing 777 Emirates Air Flight #ek232from Washington DC to Dubai diverting to Iceland. No reason given. t.co/46j4LCUwok

BoiledPiss · 16/03/2014 22:37

I cant find it anywhere else, so perhaps just ignore my last post, sorry

Jellylove · 16/03/2014 22:42

The poor Malay authorities, they probably have china & the US and goodness knows who else breathing down their necks about what information they can or cannot release, I expect they are puppets to a point.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/03/2014 22:42

Googling "emirates 777 diverted" only brings up one (dodgy looking) result from today, so I'd say not real :)

DinoSnores · 16/03/2014 22:42

Goldie, "A degree in aeronautical engineering "

It's not rocket science. Oh, wait... grin"

Have you seen this? Wink

BoiledPiss · 16/03/2014 22:44

Yep. Beyond, the flight is ek232 and googling that brings up flight info but no mention of redirection. Sorry, moment of blind panic then! Blush

Jellylove · 16/03/2014 22:45

That flight diversion if it was real could be something as simple as having to land to let off a poorly passenger

DinoSnores · 16/03/2014 22:46

Looking at the Emirates Flight Tracker, the flight from Dulles to Dubai was diverted via Keflavik due to "operational reasons".

Departed Dulles 11:33
Arrived KEF 20:48
Due to depart KEF 22:45
Due to arrive Dubai 10:15

KenAdams · 16/03/2014 22:46

We'll need a new thread again soon. Can we please let Goldie start it, as I have OP posts highlighted please?

Hmmkay · 16/03/2014 22:48

On the "flight radar" twitter account that just tweeted that , they have retweeted a passenger afterwards saying that plane was diverted to Iceland because they didn't clean the plane's toilets properly in Washington. How annoying must that be for them!
