If the hijacking got ballsed up to the point of crashing, I'm not sure the people behind it would be all that keen to hold their hands up would they?

BoiledPiss · 16/03/2014 20:00

Maybe not Imp, didn't think of that!

gindrinker · 16/03/2014 20:04

if you want to hijack a plane you can do it.
If you really wanted to kill someone you could strangle someone with a jumper or a pair of tights.

Between a few people you can bring various fluids, batteries etc to make a bomb.

I dont think you can entirely eliminate all risks with flying.
Unless you have planes with no pilots and passengers are under general anaesthetic for the duration.

But its a calculated risk. There must be 100s if not 1000s of successful flights everyday.

NickNacks · 16/03/2014 20:04

We're flying to the US in two weeks and I have to admit to feeling a bit Confused about it.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 16/03/2014 20:09

"I dont think you can entirely eliminate all risks with flying.Unless you have planes with no pilots and passengers are under general anaesthetic for the duration."

I could cope with that when travelling with young kids...

tiaramasu · 16/03/2014 20:10

Does anyone know whether it has been said what was being carried in the cargo?
Presumably those details are never released?

PublicEnemyNumeroUno · 16/03/2014 20:10

Please don't worry about flying to the states, i flew to New York last year and when you see how security conscious they are over there it kinda puts your mind at ease.

I'd love it. I can't sleep on planes :)

Experts say the black box will only transmit for 30 days, so yet another big reason why it is important to find it 'sooner than later' so authorities can glean data to understand what happened.

Does anyone know the range of the black box signals reach? How close would the people searching have to be to detect the signal?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 16/03/2014 20:36

Sky News special on now.

lessonsintightropes · 16/03/2014 20:38

Earlybird it could still be found after this time though, so whilst very important to find it as soon as possible, it's not impossible it would be found. The Air France wreckage of off Brazil was only found 2 years later, although they did find surface debris after five days (and had a tiny search area compared to this).

clam · 16/03/2014 20:38

At risk of inducing apoplexy in goldie my SIL is adamant that a colleague of hers emailed her from her iPad on a flight from SFO to JFK a few weeks ago. She apparently asked how come and was told it was now possible. They had an email conversation mid-flight.
Is she talking bollocks quite likely

Methe · 16/03/2014 20:40

Some planes have wifi I think.

lessonsintightropes · 16/03/2014 20:40

clam to save Goldie (!) wifi is available on some flights currently, but only really in the States (and in Europe with Norwegian Air - but as far as I know, that's it). The Gogo technology used over there simply isn't yet available in Asia.

Catsmamma · 16/03/2014 20:41

Highly inappropriate, but watching the ISS live prog....anyone wondering if there might something to see if they look properly??

:o

Catsmamma · 16/03/2014 20:42

oooh, that was not supposed to be a :o it was supposed to be a Shock

bad person

DowntonTrout · 16/03/2014 20:49

There are two reasons why a terrorist group haven't claimed it yet, that I can think of. I do know a Chinese group claimed it but I believe this was discounted.

  1. It wasn't a terrorist/hijack at all. It was pilot suicide.
  1. This is just the beginning and the main event is still to come,

Whether that is re-using the plane, although I still struggle to believe they have successfully got away with landing it somewhere, or whether the plane was never intended to be found or used, i.e. it is at the bottom of the ocean, and the ultimate aim is to cause panic and chaos, perhaps by doing it again, as I mentioned before. In any case, there are plenty of people who are prepared to die for their cause and sometimes that means taking as many other people down with them. That is what is truly frightening about all this.

Octopusinabunchofdaffodils · 16/03/2014 20:49

I'd agree about the security flying to the states, they are super conscious and they will be even more so now. I flew from the USA to Europe on the first day that flights started after 9/11 and the security made their normal level look like nothing, they will have put it up to that now as well by all, accounts.

CheckpointCharlie · 16/03/2014 20:54

I have managed to keep the whole thing from my dd so far (she is 11 and due to me not flying, this is her first flight) and I hope she doesn't find out about it before she goes.
Glad security will be stepped up.

I know it is statistically safer than driving but it still gives me the fear.

NancyinCali · 16/03/2014 20:54

Yes I used wifi on a internal flight from San Jose to LA a few months back. Never had it on any other flights.

MooseBeTimeForSpring · 16/03/2014 20:55

I'm sure I've flown on an Etihad flight where one side of the in flight entertainment handset controlled the tv/games and the other was a phone and credit card swipe.

waitingforgodot · 16/03/2014 20:55

Petronas Towers are twin towers (ie twin skyscrapers). Surely not...

PandaFeet · 16/03/2014 20:56

I don't think we will ever know what happened or where it is.

The guardian has an article now saying that investigators think its in the Indian Ocean where there is no radar at all. And no passing ships that might spot it.

here

So unbearable for the families. :(

MooseBeTimeForSpring · 16/03/2014 20:57

I did

lessonsintightropes · 16/03/2014 20:57

Moose I remember the same system on a Continental flight over 10 years ago. The crucial thing is that this system, like the transponder, can also be switched off.

No phone calls = no mystery necessarily.
