He said today that his throat cancer was caused by cunnilingus.

Yes i read that. I don't think I wanted to know. His wife must be very proud of his honest outpourings. Confused

MolotovCocktail · 02/06/2013 20:11

Yeah, I read about it too. I wanna know just who exactly has he been sucking off?

Grin

Seriously though, I think his years of smoking and drinking might be contributing factors, too.

interesting link here

KittyAndTheFontanelles · 02/06/2013 20:16

It is true though that you can get throat cancer from oral sex. It's obviously a different type to that caused from smoking and drinking. That's how they can be so sure.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 02/06/2013 20:16

I'm pretty sure it perfectly possible because he said his was a hpv cancer... Some hpv cervix cancers are as a result of sexually transmitted hpv, so maybe this is also possible. But I would imagine the strongest links with and head and neck cancers are drinking and smoking.

CatherineofMumbles · 02/06/2013 20:17

Seriously though, I think his years of smoking and drinking might be contributing factors, too.

indeed! What must his poor wife be thinking/feeling.........Shock

CaptainJamesTKirk · 02/06/2013 20:18

You don't get hpv from smoking and drinking though! Most head and neck cancers are caused by this but not all.

SqueakyCleanNameChange · 02/06/2013 20:20

It's entirely possible - HPV causes a range of oral/throat cancers, and almost all heterosexually active women have it at some point, so it's not a slur on his wives or other partners at all unless we were meant to think they were virgin brides Hmm. But smoking and drinking wouldn't help matters.

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 20:21

I am sure it's true if he says so, and he also says the vest cure for it is more oral sex though. Those poor children at school tomorrow.....

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 20:21

vest? best.

CatherineofMumbles · 02/06/2013 20:23

Is he the one who was treated for sex addiction? so likely to have got through more partners than most. Wonder what he has passed on to them.
And yes, poor kids - how the hell do you tough that one out...

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 20:24

I just don't think we needed to know.

SqueakyCleanNameChange · 02/06/2013 20:34

I think that if he's survived a gruelling recovery process from a nearly fatal cancer he's allowed to say what caused it, even if that has to do with s...e...x

These are preventable diseases killing large numbers of people, and we shouldn't talk about it because "eww!"? Should Jade Goody have kept quiet as well?

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 20:43

It's more odd that he has been clear for 2 years and then decide to say this.

Moln · 02/06/2013 20:47

throat cancer? the treatment for that can be horrendous.

Moln · 02/06/2013 20:52

Not that chemo/radio therapy isn't horrendous btw!! but going down the surgery route when it doesn't work is seriously awful (I speak as someone whose close relative just has)

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 02/06/2013 21:05

I think fair enough for raising awareness etc etc, just thinking if I was C Z-J I'd feel reeeeaaaalllllyyyy weird about him just announcing this out of nowhere!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 21:14

Jade Goody told her story as she was diagnosed and had treatment. the take up of smear tests went up.

I am not sure what anyone can do about the oral sex HPV thing TBH. Is he raising awareness of not having oral sex?

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 02/06/2013 21:16

Sparkling that's what I'm wondering too! Surely this gives people who aren't keen more of a reason not to do it?!
'Sorry darling I can't go down on you, it might give me cancer'

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 21:18

Yes Big I am not sure what he is raising awareness of, or why he waited 2 years to give us this nugget of personal information. Confused

SqueakyCleanNameChange · 02/06/2013 21:24

Seriously people, his cancer, his choice what to say about it.

And yes, if you want to reduce oral/oesophageal cancer risk you can abstain from oral sex, you can practice safe oral or you can support HPV immunisation to reduce the risk in the next generation. And you can also let people know that just because they don't smoke or drink that doesn't mean they can ignore symptoms.

Sparklingbrook · 02/06/2013 21:27

He can say what he likes squeaky and we can wonder why.

SqueakyCleanNameChange · 02/06/2013 21:35

Well, at a guess, it's because Xan Brooks said "Do you regret the fags and booze now that they've given you cancer?" If someone said something like that to you, would you not think it worth pointing out that a very major cause was something entirely different, that is not normally regarded as a health risk? Or would you nod and lie "ah yes, the fags and the booze, that was it, I brought it all on myself"?
