My dentist is always on the hunt for oral cancer. This may be because he's very conscientious or it may be because he gets paid by the NHS to flag up possible cases
.
I have no idea - I'm just putting that idea out there and Icould be wrong - but he's fucking enthusiastic.
This entailed me traipsing to a hospital four years ago after a two month referral which made me feel a little edgy, to sit among people who looked a lot iller than me.
The nurse appeared surprised to see me. The doctor/dentist was flabbergasted. She said the small lump in my cheek was a benign fatty deposit and explained why she though that and also explained what to look and taste for in cancer. She also explained about risk factors, of which I had none. She didn't even bother with a biopsy.
From her explanation it seemed that my type of lump was common and you didn't have to be an expert to know that. She didn't say it but I think any dentist not looking to boost his income from the NHS would have known that.
I'm due for a check up now but I've been nibbling the inside of my cheek, because I do that sometimes. I'm trying hard to stop and let it heal because I can't face him saying: 'Ooh, Miss Limited. There is an area of trauma inside your mouth. It could be something suspicious. I think you should go to the Eastman. Ker-ching.'
