He said today that his throat cancer was caused by cunnilingus.

Thoughts?!

It's funny he's now backtracking on it and saying he was just talking about possible causes. I don't see why there was anything wrong with what he said - we all know that nuns don't get cervical cancer, for example. It's not as if the news that certain diseases can be sexually transmitted comes as a shock.

Interesting piece in the Guardian today about how in Australia they give the HPV vaccine to boys as well as girls, and the impact it's had: www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jun/04/michael-douglas-oral-sex-hpv-vaccine

Does anyone seriously believe these type of statements by actors and the great and the good?

Charities, awareness, HPV, actors, great and the good, media publicity leads to vaccines

claig · 04/06/2013 09:30

'they give the HPV vaccine to boys as well as girls'

and yesterday on the news, someone said that gay men don't receive the benefit of herd immunity from girls who have received the HPV vaccine.

The great and the good want everyone to have these vaccines.

Mollydoggerson · 04/06/2013 09:36

Can't see a problem with what he said, just stating a fact.

Why would CZJ feel weird about it. Most men give oral sex to numerous women in their lifetime. Why should MD or CZJ be any different?

claig · 04/06/2013 09:58

"Asked if cancer had made him regret years of smoking and drinking Mr Douglas said: ?No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus.?

However, Dr James McCaul, a head and neck cancer specialist at Bradford Royal Infirmary said that there was no way Mr Douglas could be sure his cancer was a direct consequence of oral sex."

I wonder which medical expert told Douglas about the cause of that cancer.

I also wonder where he got this piece of knowledge from

"Another of Mr Douglas? claims which raised the eyebrows of experts was that ?the best cure? for HPV-related cancer was more cunnilingus."

Awareness, actors, publicity and vaccines.

"The authors of the BMA letter say they recognise that vaccinating all boys ?is not economically viable in the UK at the moment?.

However, new figures on the rise in throat cancer linked to sexual activity could change that, they say. There are more than 1,000 cases of oropharyngeal cancer a year, which have doubled since the mid-1990s. Many specialists criticised the Department of Health?s decision to restrict HPV vaccination to girls when it was introduced in 2008. They argued that giving it to boys would reduce the prevalence of the infection in the population, offer added protection to girls, and prevent genital warts"

I'm sure CZJ was completely aware of the relationship history of MD before she walked into that one.

I don't think this will upset her too much will it?

Incidentally my old uni buddy was her cousin and met MD when he was visiting the family in Wales.

"Very charming, but bandy legs" was her complete summary of the experience.

"Lighthousekeeping Mon 03-Jun-13 20:22:33
I think it's quite hard to test for the virus and its not done on the NHS. I've no idea of the odds."

The NHS is rolling out a programme to test for high risk HPV strains as part of the smear programme. There is a new NICE protocol which says something like mildly abnormal smear + no high risk HPV, return to 3 year recalls, if high risk HPV present, refer on immediately (when in the past only more serious abnormalities would have been referred). It is not rolled out in all areas yet though.

My gynae told me that if you tested a 100 people at random about 70 would test positive for some strain of HPV and many of the others probably have had it at some point in their lives. Almost everyone who is sexually active will have encountered it.

Headline of the day from News Thump. :o

Lighthousekeeping · 04/06/2013 13:41

Claim I'm sure he had the money to pay for top specialists. The reason it was found in the first place was because he took himself to Canada when they had ignored it in America.

Oblomov · 08/06/2013 11:45

I can't wait to see Douglas and Damon as Liberace / Thorson.

GetOrf, said she was surprsied it didn't get a cineman release is US. But, I'm not surprised.
Ii was said that it was too gay for hollywood. Thus, I am assuming that there are some very dark bits to their gay love affair. And that's WHY I want to see it.

Beyonce said , that it was ,released in UK June 7th apparently, so it is a film, at the cinema in the UK, now, then? Becasue it's not on at our local cinema, yet.

BelfastBloke · 09/06/2013 09:52

Saw Behind the Candelabra last night. It was excellent, as were both leads.

During one of the two/three brief, but full-on, sex scenes between Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, I had a lightbulb moment: "Oh THAT'S why he felt he needed to emphasise his heterosexual cancer".

I can't wait to see it, I wonder if it will even get to my little town though? Were there many punters?
