Hope no one else has started this.

OP posts:
lowercase · 26/02/2013 10:17

looking at the facts, he clearly is unhinged.

the truth is, he killed Reeva Steenkamp.

BlingBubbles · 26/02/2013 11:39

Isthisme, I posted this link much further up on this thread, it explains things very clearly with regards to the SA judicial system

edition.cnn.com/2013/02/22/world/africa/pistorius-legal-q-and-a

If found not guilty of pre-mediated murder OP can be found guilty of culpable homicide.

MechanicalTheatre · 26/02/2013 13:36

Salbertina I think it is pretty dangerous to go around saying "if x happens in childhood, y is likely to happen in adulthood." That kind of thinking has never sat easily with me. Looking at it the other way round, x happened when they were an adult, let's look back and see if we can see the y in their childhood, fine. The other way round...I don't know. I don't think we can say "well, his mother died when he was young, so it's quite likely he IS an abuser."

Salbertina · 26/02/2013 13:50

Wasn't me saying it but quality press here in SA (Mail & Guardian, note nothing to do w Uk ones!) much (intelligent) discussion during which they cited an SA report on "hardship in childhood" and its effects into adulthood. I was not saying this means OP would therefore necessarily be an abuser or that he was.

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 26/02/2013 14:04

Salbertina, what is the general feeling about this in SA, is there a lot of sympathy for OP? If you dont mind me asking Smile

Salbertina · 26/02/2013 14:12

Not really - lots of sympathy for Reeva's family. Am 2 fb friends removed from a family member (i realize sounds sad, just trying to answer question!) and all obv gutted.... Lots of analysis of society, gunownership, male identity etc All amazed he's on bail.

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 26/02/2013 15:17

Thanks Salbertina, must be so devestating for her family and friends, and hard to read of sympathy for him.

Hopefully some of the issues you mention in Society may be looked at and worked upon. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I keep returning to this thread to read - and what strikes me today is that there seems to be a lot of rationalizations. Everyone and everything is used to keep the blame and responsibility away from HIM. Like a form of denial I think - as if it's too terrible to contemplate that he knowingly killed her. Suppose that's to be expected.

mary21 · 26/02/2013 17:25

Just seen he,s holding a memorial service tonight. Wants it kept private. Seems an odd thing to leak to the press.

ajandjjmum · 26/02/2013 17:29

Did he leak it?

JillJ72 · 26/02/2013 17:35

My view - if he is telling the truth in his affidavit, why feed a rumour mill and PR machine to 'get people onside', it only causes further distress, surely? It could be his people, equally it could be someone who doesn't like him working to 'not get people onside' who knows?

TBH any feeding the media from his people would not be appropriate. Have said this before. If he really is telling the truth, I really think he should keep his own counsel and tell his people to 'halt die klappe'. The trial will resolve all of this (hopefully).

MechanicalTheatre · 26/02/2013 17:36

Of course his PR team will be feeding the media stuff. That is their job.

Animation · 26/02/2013 17:52

If he has murdered her I should imagine he'd want to give an impression or image that he cared a lot, and hence was holding a memorial service that he wanted to be private, but then he would have to leak it out somehow that he was holding this, and in private - to foster that positive impression.

GothAnneGeddes · 26/02/2013 18:19

I don't think he can win tbh. If he keeps quiet and plods on then, he'd be seen as heartless (and guilty). If he makes any acknowledgement of what's happened then he's just trying to get people onside (and guilty).

Also, we have no idea who is directing what with regards to PR, as we don't know what state he's actually in.

Then there's the fact that this is such a huge story, that any information will be seized upon. There was even an article www.news.com.au/world/pistorius-penmanship-reveals-multiple-personalities/story-fndir2ev-1226585963279

which used a screengrab from someone's tumblr of a note he'd sent to a fan, to analyse his handwriting and conclude that he had a hidden dark side. Confused

MechanicalTheatre · 26/02/2013 18:26

Yeah that's ridiculous Goth. Who doesn't have a dark side?

And all this character analysis stuff is just ridiculous. Oh he had an outburst at the Paralympics, he must be guilty. Nonsense.

There is no way his PR team won't be feeding stuff to the media. That's just a given.

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 26/02/2013 18:27

I agree that whatever he does will be wrong but maybe the best advice he could be given would be to keep a very low profile. Not sure a memorial service is the best thing to leak tbh, its rather bad taste.

thefirstmrsrochester · 26/02/2013 18:36

So

  • he is guilty and doing all he can to present to the worlds media a broken and unstable man, using whatever means he can to elicit sympathy.
Or
  • he didn't mean to kill her, is horrified that he did, is remorseful and is reaching out to his own faith to somehow get through.

I don't know if he is guilty of premeditated murder, nobody does yet. But it very much seems like damned if you do, damned if

thefirstmrsrochester · 26/02/2013 18:38
  • you don't.
Animation · 26/02/2013 18:39

Yes all eyes are on him - all his actions will be scrutinized as they should be because of his own actions that night. It's a responsibility issue in that he is responsible for the situation that he now finds himself in. I hope he doesn't whinge about not being able to win with the public whatever he does, because the fact is he still has his life and she doesn't.

Keeping a low profile might be the best advice anyone could give him.

MechanicalTheatre · 26/02/2013 18:45

I wouldn't say it's damned if you do and damned if you don't. At the end of the day, he will be scrutinised and people will each reach a different conclusion. That's pretty normal, really.

But I do know that everything we hear from him from now til the trial will be completely PR-driven.

DreamsTurnToGoldDust · 26/02/2013 18:47

yy Mechanical, the media PR wheel will be spinning fast now until the trial, hate it.

I saw that too. I reckon it probably is the former Mrs McC. She lost a leg after all, maybe she's met him.

Just read this in the graphology article:

"Oscar has not found one mood that he feels comfortable being all the time."

Great insight there from their 'expert', no?

I find I feel comfortable being the same mood all the time. That's the joy of being an android.

tiredofwaitingforitalltochange · 26/02/2013 19:29

I confess my obsession with this case shows no sign of abating. I was up till the wee small hours last night watching countless clips of OP on YouTube. He just comes across as being so... nice. It's made me more confused than ever.
